I also have a Panasonic Arc 6 which shaves closer BUT this Philips is so much more comfortable, it's so quiet compared to a foil shaver, the heads don't get hot like a foil shaver, and it doesn't leave flat hairs on the neck. I normally shave after 3 days and it still shaves so easily. I actually think the cleaning pod works really well. Overall extremely pleased but it's not as close as a foil shaver.

Had the 5000 for several years decided to upgrade to the all inclusive version of the 9000 (includes beard trimmer, nose/ear trimmer, wireless charging pad and clever washing/cleaning device)

First shave on 9000 was definitely closer than 5000, didn’t feel to glide over the face like the 5000 yet felt like it was engaged with the stubble, not just sliding over shaving foam. Delighted. I’ve sensitive skin and had no burn marks etc.

Wireless charge pad is a nice touch, which is USB and two pin. Much bigger than the 5000 simple plug in chord. (Tested the pad, it wouldn’t charge my iPhone)

Nasal trimmer worked fine. Not got a beats so can’t test trimmer

It comes with a really, and I mean really clever cleaning attachment. You place the razor upside down in the device and it does a high speed rinse of all the heads in a bath of special Phillips solution. I love this. A great idea. A one minute high intensity was after each shave.

Overall. Yes, upgrade. You won’t regret it. Great shave. Nice device. If it lasts as long as my 5000 (4 years+) I will be delighted.

This model, SP9885/35, has a charger with Schuko 2-pin fitting, NOT a UK 3-pin. There is no UK adapter provided. That said, any USB charger providing 5.0 Volts at 1.5 Amperes or greater will work in its stead but that may invalidate the warranty. That is why I have given it only 4 stars. Is it too much to ask that an adapter be provided by Amazon as I cannot find any mention of this important detail in the product description on their website.

Here are my first impressions:

The shaver is not cheap at £318 but feels of good quality and is easy to use.

It gives a good and comfortable shave in use, with one niggling exception. I could not get it to cut the upper lip hairs that are close to the nose very effectively because of the shape of the head assembly.

I do not like the comic-style manual. I am visually impaired and am unable to "read" the detail without a magnifying glass. (Yes, Philips, I know pictures don't require you to print multi-lingual versions but can we have the option of a legible text or larger images for those of us who have difficulty in reading? How about PDF's on your website?)

Again, the other text documents, including warranty, have a print size that is too difficult for me to read.

I cannot find a Parts List that would ensure any spares I require were appropriate for the shaver I have.

Bought to replace my Braun series 9

I bought this to replace my Braun Series 9 which died after about 4 years. Prior to the Braun I had one of the older, more traditional-looking Philips electric shavers. At the time I thought the Braun was an excellent shaver, and I didn't really have very high hopes for this Philips. Just for reference, I had replaced the Braun's blades just before it died, so it was in top condition.

Usually, when I switch shavers there's some adjustment period, during which I get irritated skin, but this time there wasn't any of that - The Philips gave a very smooth, irritation-free shave right from the start. One piece of advice though, and this applied to any electric shaver, is to use shave oil - You wouldn't have a wet shave without using any kind of foam, gel or oil, so why would you with an electric shaver. I find that king of shaves shaves oil works best. There's something in it which gives a really good glide.

I've used this for around three months now, so here are my
+ gives a really good shave - equal to the Braun series 9
+ shaves well around the neck and Adam's apple - better than Braun in this regard
+ nice and quiet - much quieter than the Braun
+ clean - trimming stay inside the head and don't fall all over the place - the vibrating motion of the Braun caused trimmings to get shaken out and make a mess
+ cleaning cartridges last a long time - I'm still on my first after three months of using it ~twice a week

- cleaning station generally works well, but it doesn't seem to clean out all of the clumped-up trimmings from inside the head
- the grip seems to be designed for holding it like a hammer - all very manly, but I think most people would want to hold it with a lighter, more dexterous grip

I have had a few brands or shavers over the years, but the last Philips I had was so good (5000 series) that when that one finely started to take longer to charge (its years old) I decided to go for Philips again and although this Prestige model is a lot of money, wow, its worth every penny. A fast comfortable and smooth shave even with 5 day old stubble. The heads glide smoothly, the shaver gets every hair, even those odd funny angle ones the old shaver used to need 2 to 3 passes to get. I am delighted with this shaver and highly recommend it. One of the most obscure but useful improvements in design has to be the hinged head which makes cleaning it simpler. Philips are expensive but worth the money for the quality and the results
