Don't lose the dongle!
4 Stars
Don't lose the dongle!
Good keyboard, mouse a little small for my liking but didn't take long to get used to it. Worked straight out of the box - once I'd retrieved it from the bin because the dongle is rather stupidly attached to the box (see pic) and not in the compartment in the mouse where they are normally hiding. Nice to see Duracell batteries included and not cheap test batteries.

Using this arrangement in my home recording studio. Some people have mentioned it having a small mouse and "lag" when typing. I've not noticed any typing lag whatsoever and yes the mouse is smaller than standard but really, the difference is marginal. It certainly isnt one of those "compact micro mouse" and feels nice in my hand. It doesn't have one of those annoying red laser optical sensors either so no red light flashes everytime its moved or lifted slightly. The keyboard has a solid mechanical key buttons and have a great quality feel to them. Wireless works perfectly with no issues. All in all ... a great buy.

I wanted something i could use from the sofa and i went for the Logitech MK270 Wireless Keyboard and Mouse, and for the price, it’s pretty solid. The keyboard works perfectly and is really comfortable to type on, No real complaints.

However, the mouse is where this combo loses a star. It's not as smooth or accurate as my Logitech Pro Wireless (which i was never expecting). For long-term or heavy use, the mouse can get frustrating because it's just not as precise and feels alittle laggy. But if you're only using it irregularly or just need a basic setup for occasional tasks, it's definitely worth putting up with, especially given the price.

If this review were based on the quality of the keyboard and mouse in terms of hardware alone, I would have rated it 5 stars.

If this review were based on the wireless connectivity of both pieces of hardware, I would have rated it 1 star.

But this review is based on both of these elements, thus resulting in an average rating of 3 stars.

I work as a data scientist and this means that I rely on a good quality keyboard and mouse to get my work done as precision is key to me doing a good job.

I also know my stuff when it comes to hardware and software (I am a Computer Scientist) and thus would like to highlight the following in more detail for those who are curious.

Despite sporting a price low enough to understandingly warrant concern, the keyboard and mouse are both of a very high quality.

The mouse is approximately 20% smaller than a standard-sized mouse, and even though I have large hands, it still fit quite comfortably in my palm. My favourite feature on the mouse is the fact that it uses an "invisible optic", meaning that the red light that usually appears beneath the mouse when you move it around is actually invisible to the naked eye, and this is a nice touch in my opinion because it prevents the red light from ever catching your eye should you ever lift the mouse from the surface for any reason.

The keyboard is a quiet keyboard, meaning that the keys make considerably less noise than your basic, standard keyboards (think of each key press as a muffled thud, as opposed to a mechanical click/tap). I type at approximately 80 words per minute, meaning that I hit a LOT of keys when working, and subsequently generate a lot of noise (something that I am always conscious of). However, with this keyboard, I personally have noticed the reduction in the amount of noise that I produce when typing.

There are also a number of hotkeys across the top of the keyboard, and most of these came in useful for me (I have no need for the "Play/pause" button because I stream all of my music via a browser and don't use dedicated media/music software. The most useful hotkey for me was the calculator hotkey because it saved me precious seconds whilst working - rather than reaching for the mouse and clicking the calculator icon, to pressing Ctrl + R then typing "calc" and pressing return (I use Windows 10 but this works on almost all versions of Windows), I could simply hit one key and up would pop the calculator, ready to use. This is a very nice feature, in my opinion.

Both of these devices run off of batteries (included) and each sports an on/off switch, which is a nice touch. The packaging claims that they keyboard can last up to 2 years off of two AAA batteries and that the mouse can last up to 1 year off of a single AA battery and I suspect that this is based on the assumption that users will switch the devices off when they aren't using them.

The single dual USB connector (tiny, approximately one inch at its longest point) almost instantly connects both the keyboard and mouse to your machine, with no installation required, meaning that they are ready to use pretty much immediately. This type of USB connector is often colloquially referred to as a "plug-and-forget" connector, as one can indeed plug it in to their machine and then forget that it ever exists. Even though I work from a desktop PC, this is especially useful for laptop users as it doesn't add any extra bulk or protruding parts when you link it to your machine.

However, the problems arose for me around connectivity, and this is what resulted in my review being 3 stars as opposed to the 5 stars I so badly wanted to give it.

The connectivity almost constantly lagged.

I tried everything that I could possibly think of to improve connectivity, but it simply didn't work. Every 2 or 3 minutes, my keyboard and/or mouse would lag. Whenever the keyboard experienced some lag (lasting around 2 seconds), one of two things would happen: either what I had just typed would suddenly flash onto my screen, disturbing my rhythm completely as I would have had to have stopped typing at this point because there didn't appear to be any response from my hardware, or only the last few characters of the word that I was typing would appear when the lag was over.

Similarly, the mouse would also be affected with such lags whereby the cursor would stop moving altogether, then jump across the screen; or rather, it would appear to suddenly teleport from one corner of the screen to the other without any view of it moving across the screen in relation to the movements I made with my mouse.

Once again, please remember that I am an expert computer user and even I couldn't get this to work.

I tried the following:

- connected the USB connector to EVERY USB port on my computer
- bought a USB extender so that the connector could be closer to the hardware (mouse and keyboard) (note that my desktop is (ironically) kept under my desk, approximately 30cm-50cm away from the mouse and keyboard)
- even though it wasn't required, I installed extra software from the Logitech website, which didn't help
- numerous new batteries
- computer restarts with the USB connector attached and the hardware switched on
- administrator mode
- safe mode

I tried a few other things, but ultimately nothing worked, and so, after literally exhausting all avenues, I had no choice but to send this kit back and opt for a much better wired alternative (Microsoft Wired 600 Desktop, if you are wondering).

However, it may be worth noting that my desktop runs off of a wireless broadband connection (the router is downstairs, my PC is upstairs) and this may well have been what was causing some of the lag. The problem for me, however, was that I have no other way of connecting my PC to the internet, and I require the internet to do my work, so I couldn't change this aspect of it. However, all things considered, and given the size and wholly-positive reputation of Logitech, I would have expected such things (wireless router connections) to have been taken into consideration when this product was under development due to the sheer volume of users running this technology as a considerable portion of the population who would have used this wireless kit would have been connected to the internet via a wireless connection.

To conclude, my experience wasn't a good one because the quality of the hardware gave me what turned out to be false hope; I had hoped that this may be one of the first wireless kits that I have used that isn't plagued with problems, only to be upset when it gradually failed and under-performed to a point where it became a problem and I was left with no alternative but to return it.

If you don't mind the occasional drop-out (around once every two minutes), then for the price this package is absolutely worth your money. However, if like me you require precision and a strong, constant connection, then it may be best to opt for a wired alternative. In both my opinion and professional experience, wired devices will always perform better than their wireless counterparts.
