1.0 out of 5 starsA Cautionary Tale of a Promising Yet Disappointing Drive
Reviewed in Canada on July 3, 2024
Initially, I was thrilled with this drive. The price was very attractive, and it appeared to be solidly built and well-packaged, showing no signs of damage upon arrival. The size was ideal for my needs, and everything seemed perfect at first glance.
However, all of these promising attributes quickly became irrelevant when the drive failed on me the very next day. After spending an entire day transferring my data to this new drive, everything seemed to be working fine until it abruptly stopped.
I used this drive with my MacBook Pro M3 (2023), and to my dismay, Disk Utility was unable to repair or even erase the drive to allow me to start over. In an attempt to fix the problem, I purchased Disk Drill, which managed to show the contents of the drive (thankfully, I had backed up my data beforehand). Unfortunately, Disk Drill doesn't repair disks. Its "Health Analysis" revealed over 5,600 bad segments (or the equivalent for an SSD), indicating that the drive was significantly damaged and needed to be replaced.
Thankfully, Amazon's return policy allowed me to get a full refund without any hassle. I decided to invest in a Western Digital 2TB SSD instead, which for the size (2TB vs 4TB) was more expensive, has proven to be completely reliable. I’d rather have less storage with full reliability than deal with the frustration of a failing drive.
In conclusion, despite the initial appeal of this drive, the experience has taught me that reliability is worth the extra cost.
