Not Compatible With Previous Generation(s) Echo Speakers For Pairing

I have 11 Echo speakers and use them frequently throughout my house for several functions. One of my smaller speakers was experiencing static and sounded awful and needed to be replaced. The warranty is very poor so I decided to replace it. I searched exhaustively for a speaker with a digital clock face but they are no longer available so I settled for the regular round echo in white.

After receiving the new speaker I set it up to replace the old speaker which was being used as a left stereo speaker but found after 30 minutes that it was incompatible and could not perform this function. My only option was to set it up as a stand alone speaker which really sucks.

The sound isn't really any better than the older generation echos but the incompatibility takes the stereo function away completely.

Amazon Does it Again - Marginal Improvements in Sound, Touch Control and Better Clock Display

The Echo Dot continues to be Amazon's most popular and affordable smart speaker The New Gen 5 speaker looks identical to the Gen 4 version however there are some key features inside that may be important to you and you should know about before purchasing.

••• Design & Size •••
This new Echo Dot Gen 5 speaker is the exactly the same size as the previous Gen 4 Speaker

100mm x 100mm x 89mm.

Both speakers share the same spherical design and are about the size of a softball. (I’m not a big fan of the baseball shape but it looks like it’s here to stay for at least another generation).

The new Gen 5 Speaker is noticeably heavier than the Gen 4 thanks to the new speaker and electronics inside

328g - Gen 4
340g - Gen 5

Speaker:
40.6 mm Full Range speaker in the Gen 4 Dot
44.9 mm Full Range speaker in the Gen 5 Dot

The Gen 5 Dot has a New High Excursion, Full Range Speaker inside, along with an Accelerometer and temperature sensor.

••• Sound Quality •••
Amazon claims the New Echo Dot Gen 5 has twice (2x) the bass and 50% less distortion. I would agree that the new Gen 5 dot does have slightly more bass and marginally less distortion but the differences are subtle and certainly not jaw dropping.

The Gen 5 Dot continues to compress heavy bass to enable the 44.9mm full range driver to handle the lower frequencies. Compression increases the louder you turn the volume up and distortion is reduced slightly. You still can't turn the volume up past 75% before the distortion is too much.

The Echo Dot was intended to be a convenient, compact, inexpensive smart speaker … If you’re looking for better sound for music and streaming consider upgrading to the full size Echo Speaker or Echo Studio Gen 2.

••• NEW FEATURES •••

Temperature Sensor:
Both models have a temperature sensor installed which can be used to trigger home automation devices and Alexa routines. So for example you could turn a fan on when the temperature gets hot

New - Accelerometer:
The Echo Dot now supports tap gestures thanks to a new accelerometer inside. You can tap the top of the dot to pause and resume music, end a call or dismiss a timer or alarm. Some users prefer tap gestures rather than voice commands. Tapping is also better in the bedroom for example rather than using your voice to cancel the alarm and wake up your partner.

New Processor:
The Gen 5 Dot has a new AZ2 Neural Edge processor inside. This makes the New Echo Dot faster and more responsive. Many commands are processed locally on the device itself rather than in the cloud. The new processor also provides more power for audio processing.

Echo Dot with Clock:
The echo dot with clock has a brand new 5x21 high density LED display which is both brighter and easier to read. The Echo Dot Gen 5 with clock will display the time and date just like the Gen 4 but will also display the name of a song, artist, the weather, a calculator and more.

The Echo Dot Gen 5 with clock is currently $20 more than the Echo Show 5. The Echo Show 5 has a video screen which makes it an excellent alarm clock and more. The Echo Show 5 sounds as good as the Echo Dot with Clock making the Show a better deal if you want an alarm clock Smart Speaker.

No More 3.5MM Jack:
The 3.5mm audio output jack has been removed from the New Echo Gen 5 Dot. If you need a hardwired audio out jack you will want to get the Gen 4 Dot. The New Gen 5 Dot only supports wireless bluetooth there is no hardwired output option.

••• RECOMMENDATION •••
The differences between the EchoDot Gen 4 and Gen 5 from an audio perspective are minor and not worth paying a premium for. Even with the new speaker larger speaker most users will not notice the difference and have a similar experience with either speaker.

The Gen 4 Dot will quickly become a heavily discounted speaker so watch for it on Black Friday, Boxing Day, Prime Days and Deal of the Days while stock lasts.

While the Gen 4 Dot will inevitably be cheaper there are some reasons you may with to purchase the Echo Gen 5 now.

The display and features of the Gen 5 Dot with CLOCK are much better than the previous GEN 4 and well worth it. I do not recommend buying the Gen 4 Dot with clock anymore … Get the Gen 5 Clock Dot or Echo Show 5 instead if you want a Smart Speaker Clock.

Another reason to get the new Gen 5 Dot is for the Accelerometer which enables tap and touch controls. These are very convenient and handy.

If you’re just using the Echo Dot as a smart assistant and for background music then pick up the Gen 4 Dot when it's on sale.

If you’re using your Echo devices for home automation or value the tap controls then the Gen 5 Dot is the one to get.

I find this Amazon Echo speaker perfect for my computer. It has quality sound; even the bass was better than I had expected in such a small speaker. Alexa works well, the unit is attractive and can easily fit on a bookshelf. Requires a power cord to connect, which I prefer to wireless speakers using batteries, which do not last long or produce as good a sound as powered ones.

Love it that you can use the echo devices to drop into other rooms, announce, wake you or the kids up, the list goes on. What I really enjoy about these products are the possible grouping of all of your speakers and playing your music everywhere! Love it that when I walk down the hall I wouldn't miss a beat. From corner to corner you can stream music all throughout the house! These are only some of the things you can do with the echo products. Pick your product and give it a try! Pour commencer j'ai eu de la difficulté à configurer Alexa, le problème était au moment de la configuration vocale, j'ai répéter la même phrase au moins 20 fois, débrancher et rebrancher alexa, desinstaller l'application, la réinstaller à un moment donner sa fonctionné, mais qu'elle perte de temps. Ensuite, lorsque je demande pour jouer de la musique, 3 fois sur 4 elle ne fais pas jouer le titre exacte que je demande, mais une autre chanson du même artiste. Après quelques chanson elle essaye de m'abonner à amazon music, est-ce obligatoire pour écouter de la musique? Dans un mois est-ce que je pourrais encore écouter de la music? Parce qu'elle me prévient que Amazon music est gratuit pour 1 mois seulement. J'ai essayer de me faire une liste de musique favorite pour qu'à l'avenir, j'ai juste besoin de lui demander sa. Lorsque je lui est dit que j'aimais une chanson elle m'a dit la prendre en note. Lorsque je lui demande de jouer ma musique favorite, elle joue pas mes chansons favorites, mais des chansons du même artistes et sa peut être n'importe quoi, je n'aime pas toutes les chansons d'un artistes. Alors mon premier essaie avec Alexa ne m'impressionne pas. Je lui est demandé si elle avait accès à mes favoris sur YouTube (ce qui aurait ete plus facile), elle ne sait pas.

As someone who is new to using these type of devices, i would say that they are helpful specially in the case of controlling tvs lights and other smart devices.
2 issues observed are:
1. sound quality isnt very good and it sometimes stops playing spotify for no obvious reason.
2. Sometimes you have to say alexa twice to actually have it listen and respond.
