I only needed this MJ for work so I simply plugged the MJ into my computer. I was upset at first because there was no room for other USB's when I plugged the MJ in but, then I realized it came with an extension to avoid that problem and I was super happy again. After that, I just logged into the setup website and followed their super easy instructions! I paid $10 up front so I could have a Canadian number. Then I just plugged my phone jack into the MJ and that was it! SOOOOOOO EASY! Love it! I've tested it and it works great! I also love the fact that since I can plug it into my computer, I don't have to worry about having a cord connected to my modem. However that is an option for those who choose to have a stationary phone that is connected at all times.

Why did it take me so long to find this hidden gem?

I searched for weeks to find an AFFORDABLE VOIP solution. VOIP USE - Small business phone to keep my private numbers confidential. Every other VOIP provider wanted $26 or more PER MONTH!! As my business grows, this may be worthwhile. However, I am not at the level currently.

This is a plug it in and it just works - SOLUTION. Don't follow the instructions on the box (you'll spend unnecessary money). Plug it in and then goto the website, sign in, get a FREE VOIP number. You CAN purchase vanity numbers from the website ($10).

Buy this. IT WORKS. :)

The device itself is ingenious and easy to use. You can plug it directly into your router and use it with a telephone, or plug it into your laptop and use your laptop as a phone when you travel. That's very flexible for a VoIP device.

The software that runs when you plug the device into your computer is very clunky and didn't allow me to connect to the registration server. However, I was able to activate it by going to the MagicJack website, which recognized my device and let me complete the registration.

A couple of things for Canadian users to keep in mind: if you want a Canadian phone number, you have to pay an additional fee for that. The included 1 year of service is only for American phone numbers. Also, you can not set outgoing CallerID for Canadian numbers. Your number will show up as "Unknown" if you use a Canadian phone number.

This review is about my experience dealing with the MagicJack support staff, which was one of the worse interactions I have ever had with a corporation. AND, you may have to deal with them especially if you are in Canada as they will not give you or port a Canada # without a credit card on file. Which is OK, but that's where the problems began, their system would not accept my card.

I constantly received a message saying: "Error while adding credit card number". I checked my details over and over and all correct (I use my card constantly online with zero issues). So I called the company, after being passed around to different departments and having to verify my identity over and over again, I was told that the reason my Card is not being accepted is my Postal Code is incorrect. But it's not incorrect, I know my own post code, it's on all my mail, I can verify it by going to the Canada Post website, it's correct...

I explained this to the person on the phone, that I use my card all the time, on Amazon, everywhere, and my post code is not incorrect. I remained calm and polite and explained that there must be a problem with their system as I use my card everywhere. They just kept repeating that their system says that my postcode is incorrect.

I suggested that they should put me through to their tech support or IT dpt so they know about this issue, but this person just kept repeating that my postcode was wrong. We went around in circles a few times and instead of trying to understand that I'm not getting my own postcode wrong, they just insisted I was the problem.

Then they said they will have to hang up now. I asked for a supervisor, another department, and they just repeated the same thing again. I pointed out that for the sake of simply listening to me and understanding that my postcode is not incorrect they will not only lose a customer but create ill feeling as they have forced me to have to cancel and go elsewhere, as well as return the magic-jack etc which puts me without a phone for who knows how many more weeks. They just repeated the same thing again. So here I am, warning you, and returning the product, and as a person who helps people setup off grid networks etc, I will never recommend this product, ever.

Update finally got it to work. Plug it on your network and not directly to laptop worked for me. Then after trying countless times, it finally registered. Once registered the rest worked fine.

I ended up trying it on an old Windows 7 laptop and tried on the Edge browser. It worked and I even ported my number in! Now 5/5 stars! Works great, iPhone app is great to receive calls on the go, and saving money!

Hardware is fine so ‘technically’ it works at the very basic level. however, As others have already commented: Registering a phone number is impossible. I wasted hours assuming it would work. Just don’t bother. Customer support is a nightmare and redirects you to their useless website. Nothing works. The site takes on your information but then errors out. Customer service takes your info but refers you to the site. Not sure how they are in business as I can’t pay them. So useless product. Useless company. I really wanted this to work. Tried on windows and mac. I am Techical so I thought something glitched. I’ll try again tomorrow but for now zero stars.
