The sharpener has 2 clear plastic covers; one in the front and one in the back, and they are very easy to take off. The covers are meant to keep the shavings in the sharpener chamber, and they can then be removed for easy cleaning. It has 2 different holes to sharpen multi-sized pencils : a small and a larger one. The small one fits most eyeliners and lipliners and the larger one fits most jumbo eyeshadow pencils.
By sharpening eyeliners and lipliners, you get a much more precise application. Some liners are soft and some have a harder texture. This has a direct influence on how well / easy it is to sharpen each pencil. Some sharpeners on the market are better than others for softer textured liners.
I have tested different textured liners, wood pencils and even tested it with Melissa & Doug Wax Crayon Set. For lipliners and eyeliners, this sharpener performed relatively well for harder-lead liners mostly. My softer textured liners were definitely more awkward to sharpen. The tips remained pretty rounded and they broke more easily than with my usual makeup sharpeners. I tested it with regular school wood pencils and it performed really well and I managed to get the leads pretty sharp. I also tested it with triangular wax pencils (Melissa & Doug brand) in the larger hole and it worked surprisingly well.
At the end of the day, it's an ok sharpener but the clear plastic covers, not only cannot contain a lot of shavings, but they pop off way too easily (often in the midst of sharpening something), which results with shavings all over the place. I have kept the sharpeners but I use them exclusively for wood pencils & wax crayons as I find its performance somewhat disappointing with most of my makeup.

I ordered this Dual Sharpener because I wanted an extra one for the cosmetic bag in my purse. The description says : ''Includes a bonus small sharpener perfect for travel'', however I didn't receive a bonus sharpener along with this one.
