Heartless Hunter: The Crimson Moth: Book 1 Kindle Edition
AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!
"A steamy game of cat and mouse between witch and witch-hunter, played out against a backdrop of opulence, secrets, and bloody history. I couldn't look away." - Kendare Blake, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Champion of Fate
Enemies-to-lovers doesn't get more high stakes than a witch and a witch hunter falling in love in bestselling author Kristen Ciccarelli's latest romantic fantasy.
On the night Rune’s life changed forever, blood ran in the streets. Now, in the aftermath of a devastating revolution, witches have been diminished from powerful rulers to outcasts ruthlessly hunted due to their waning magic, and Rune must hide what she is.
Spending her days pretending to be nothing more than a vapid young socialite, Rune spends her nights as the Crimson Moth, a witch vigilante who rescues her kind from being purged. When a rescue goes wrong, she decides to throw the witch hunters off her scent and gain the intel she desperately needs by courting the handsome Gideon Sharpe - a notorious and unforgiving witch hunter loyal to the revolution - who she can't help but find herself falling for.
Gideon loathes the decadence and superficiality Rune represents, but when he learns the Crimson Moth has been using Rune’s merchant ships to smuggle renegade witches out of the republic, he inserts himself into her social circles by pretending to court her right back. He soon realizes that beneath her beauty and shallow façade, is someone fiercely intelligent and tender who feels like his perfect match. Except, what if she’s the very villain he’s been hunting?
Kristen Ciccarelli’s Heartless Hunter is the thrilling start to The Crimson Moth duology, a romantic fantasy series where the only thing more treacherous than being a witch...is falling in love.
“Enchanting and deeply romantic, Heartless Hunter drew me in with the first sentence and left me breathless by the last. A story that unfolds like a spell, and one that is destined to capture your heart.” - Rebecca Ross, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Divine Rivals

I went into this book totally blind. Didn’t read the blurb, didn’t read reviews, nothing. All I knew was that it involved a witch and a witch hunter and the cover was gorgeous lol. Thankfully, Bookstagram didn’t let me down!
First off, the world building in this story was so fantastic! It’s very much magical realism in what feels like the Georgian or Victorian era. Think Pride and Prejudice or Bridgerton with more women’s rights but add witches and witch trials and some pretty bad practices. I go absolutely feral for historical romance and anything witchy, so this was exactly my cup of whiskey.
Second, I found our characters surprisingly unique in a very good way. We’ve got Rune, our high society heiress who’s living a very high stakes double life. During the day she’s your typical shallow socialite but at night she’s this badass vigilante who’s fighting to save witches from being purged. Then we have Gideon, our soldier and witch hunter who desperately wants to capture this vigilante, be rid of witches once and for all and keep his brother protected. He’s not exactly what I would have expected from this character and I think that’s what made me like him so much. He’s got this soft side and this really unique hidden quality that I wouldn’t have thought would be so attractive but I ended up totally swooning over it lol. So of course Rune and Gideon end up with their lives intertwined and we begin a game of cat and mouse. The question is, who’s the cat and who’s the mouse?
The writing in this was beautiful. It was easy to read, but not dull at all. The plot was really well thought out and kept me guessing, plus it had some really fantastic twists. It does end on a cliffhanger that I didn’t see coming and actually really surprised me. The romance was just angsty enough and took a couple turns that left me really distressed lol. Turns out I’m totally emotionally invested in Rune and Gideon now, so I’d call that a win.
The only reason I’m rating this a 4 and not a 5 was that I would have liked the enemies to lovers to have been drawn out just a little bit more.
I will absolutely be reading the second book in this duology when it’s released and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys magical realism and historical romance!

Spice: 🌶️ (one open door, non-explicit scene)
Gideon and Rune were the absolute, stand-out, best parts to this book. I loved them individually as characters —their insecurities, struggles, feelings, hopes and dreams —and TOGETHER they were so fun to read about. I loved the enemies to lovers, witch/witch-hunter, cat and mouse games, between them. They were funny and cute and brought out so much character development in each other.
But everything else….was really meh. The world was interesting but I don’t think we got enough background and world building to really understand and connect with the magic and political system. Some of the details and plot lines were a bit weird and confusing (again lacking some sound explanations), not to mention that she uses her period blood to do spells???? (I will never get over that). The ending made sense but was also SO QUICK.
I would definitely read the next one, but mainly because I need more Gideon and Rune please and thank you.
Thank you to St.Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the eGalley!!

This story follows Rune, who at first glance looks just like any other wealthy socialite, except she has a secret that she is hiding from everybody except her two closest friends, she is a witch. In a land where being a witch is a death sentence. Gideon, is a witch hunter and has been looking for one witch in particular, the Crimson Moth, who has been freeing witches they have caught and making them disappear. The crimson moth, who happens to be Rune herself. This is an ultimate enemies to lovers tale set in a renaissance period.

I was enchanted by this story from the first few chapters. I loved the world building and the time period the book is set in. The plot kept me on the edge of my seat and that plot twist near the end? While I had my suspicions, it was still shocking to actually find everything out. The chemistry between Rune and Gideon is SCORCHING and it was such a well done slow burn. The friendships between Rune and Alex and Rune and Verity I absolutely adored. That cliffhanger? Shut up and give me the next book right now. The sobs that exited my body those last few chapters. This book is a masterpiece and I will be unwell until the next book is in my hand.

It's you typical YA enemies to lovers with a cliffhanger ending to leave you wanting more.
What to expect:
Love triangle
Enemies to lovers
Witch x Witch Hunters
Rebellion
Good witches and Bad Witches
Dual POV
Hidden Identity
Rune the FMC was strong, beautiful and resourceful. She had a lot of kindness and guilt after her adoptive Grandmother was purged for being a Witch. Rune was remained hidden, but trying to help other witches ever since.
Gideon the MMC seemed at first ruthless and hell bent on his quest but you soon realise as his story develops why he has made these decisions.
I loved the dynamic between the 2 characters, they brought a side out in each other rarely seen by other people.
The story flowed and was easily followed as it didn't have too much worldbuilding. I loved thay it was in 'older' times so there was emphasis on courting, parties and balls etc.
All in all without trying to give away too many spoilers it was a really great read, and I can't wait for the second half of the duology to come out.
Unfortunately we have to wait till February for the release of the second book.
