Middle of the Night: A Novel Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

In the latest jaw-dropping thriller from New York Times bestselling author Riley Sager, a man must contend with the long-ago disappearance of his childhood best friend—and the dark secrets lurking just beyond the safe confines of his picture-perfect neighborhood.

The worst thing to ever happen on Hemlock Circle occurred in Ethan Marsh’s backyard. One July night, ten-year-old Ethan and his best friend and neighbor, Billy, fell asleep in a tent set up on a manicured lawn in a quiet, quaint New Jersey cul-de-sac. In the morning, Ethan woke up alone. During the night, someone had sliced the tent open with a knife and taken Billy. He was never seen again.

Thirty years later, Ethan has reluctantly returned to his childhood home. Plagued by bad dreams and insomnia, he begins to notice strange things happening in the middle of the night. Someone seems to be roaming the cul-de-sac at odd hours, and signs of Billy’s presence keep appearing in Ethan’s backyard. Is someone playing a cruel prank? Or has Billy, long thought to be dead, somehow returned to Hemlock Circle?

The mysterious occurrences prompt Ethan to investigate what really happened that night, a quest that reunites him with former friends and neighbors and leads him into the woods that surround Hemlock Circle. Woods where Billy claimed ghosts roamed and where a mysterious institute does clandestine research on a crumbling estate.

The closer Ethan gets to the truth, the more herealizes that no place—be it quiet forest or suburban street—is completely safe. And that the past has a way of haunting the present.

In general I prefer going into my reads knowing just the basics and I was so glad I went into Middle of the Night knowing little to nothing. I’m a mood reader so for the fellow mood reader just know that this is more of a slow burn suspense/mystery than a thriller.

Broad strokes what it’s about: Life circumstances force Ethan to return to his childhood home on Hemlock Circle where 30 years earlier his best friend disappeared during a backyard tent sleepover.

I love how Sager manages to make buildings and neighborhoods feel like characters in his stories. Middle of the Night is an atmospheric read as much about grief, loss and friendship, as it is about the unsolved mystery at its center. The Hawthorn Institute is compelling and seductive in a dark way.

This book is a completely different vibe to The Only One Left and I truly enjoy the way Sager likes to switch things up. Pick this up if you’re in the mood for something dark, broody, character driven and with a touch of supernatural elements!

Riley Sager doesn’t disappoint! I’ve read many of his books, and they've always hooked me in from the beginning. This book was told from the past as well as the present. Usually I prefer reading one over the other, but I found myself enjoying both. I had fun trying to piece together what was happening, although I did not see certain things coming. The pacing was good for the most part, however a couple of parts dragged. The ending surprised me, I didn’t see it coming. Although it wasn't my favorite ending, it did tie everything up nicely. But overall, a solid thriller from Sager.

5 freaking enthusiastic stars! I read this in one sitting, stayed up most of the night because I could not put this down. Riley Sager has quickly become one of my fave authors with consistently spitting out spine tingling, horror inducing books. This one kept me guessing until the end. The characters were absolutely brilliant and I adored each and every one. I loved the hint of supernatural woven throughout. A missing boy in the scariest of circumstances made my mama heart shiver. A creepy house with questionable happenings. A dark forest. And a neighbourhood haunted by the past. This book had all the elements to be amazing and it hit the mail on the head. One of my best reads this year!

Was really looking forward to reading this book, but I struggled through the entire thing. Preordered and paid full price - won't be doing that with this author again.

Each time I read a new Riley Sager novel, the latest one ends up being my new favorite. This one's no exception.

Emotional, haunting, and truly unforgettable. Absolutely recommended.

30 years ago in 1994, Ethan's best friend Billy went missing from their tent in the backyard, with Ethan being the only witness, but he can't remember a thing.

This was my most anticipated book of the year because, as you guys know, Home Before Dark is one of my favourites. Riley Sager + Ghosts, need i say more?

Did this meet my expectations? Absolutely. I was pretty invested in this, and after being in a slump, it was quite refreshing. I loved the two different time frames, the character development, the whole sense of unease throughout.

My rating = 4.5⭐️/5

Once again a great book by Riley Sager. Reading his books has become a summer tradition for me. This , too, is an entertaining and engaging. read. I awarded only 4 stars, because the story is a tad predictable and contrived at times. The ghost element in this book is far more enjoyable than the one in The House Across The Lake where it felt like a total cop out. All in all I would recommend this book and am looking forward to Sager’s next book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Love Sager, but this one was just okay.

I have read many of Sager's books. I adore his twists and plots. However, "Middle of the Night," was not a 5-star book for me.
The characters were well-developed, the plot was believable, and the resolution made sense. It just didn't take my breath away like "The Only One Left" or "Lock All the Doors."
I will continue to buy and read his books.
