It set up easily and connected to my ipad immediately. It says to download an HP app, but you DO NOT need it. It says to go to some HP website to set up the printer, but you DO NOT need to. It says to consider signing up for an ink subscription, but you DO NOT need to. I am glad that despite the printer industry trying to drum up balony business with ink subscriptions that it will still work as normal without one. It asked me if I wanted to update the printer, and I said NO and turned off updates and it still works (since I feel that these companies will use “updates” to make their older models perform horribly so you need to buy a new one. Did I mention my Brother brand printer worked perfectly until I updated it one day, and then it completely sucked?)
The touch screen is a bit lacking. It is tiny and doesn’t even have a keyboard (it converts itself to that old school T9 thing everyone had on cellphones in 2008... where you need to press each button 1-3 times to get the correct letter to pop up). It is okay, but they obviously saved money here.
It doesn’t look like it has a “feeder” system to feed multiple pages into it to copy or scan them. So I guess you would need to do them one by one on the glass scanner surface. But, I very rarely use that feature.
The power cord is fairly short, but still worked for my setup (only just).
Did I mention setup was easy and my ipad connected to it right away (through wifi) to print a page... unlike my old Brother printer ...rest in piece(s).
I haven’t messed with the wifi, but my ipad is connected to a 5ghz network on my router, and I connected the printer to my 2.4 ghz network... and they still immediately found each other. Hmm. I wonder if it was really the wifi or some other technology since they were side by each... I am not 100% sure. Also, the ipad didn’t give me an option to print in only black and white, so it came out in colour. Not sure what’s up with that.
The actual print quality is acceptable, but not great. Perfectly fine for my purposes.
This is perfect for my purpose. I have very low need for a printer because the few things I used to need to print, I would save up and do it in the office. Now that I work from home, this is a perfect compact space saving device. I love the toner subscription service. You get free toner refills sent to you based on the message sent to hp from your printer. You pay based on the number of pages printed per month. If you rarely print like me, it's great: free toner! Plan cost per pg: free for up to 15 pgs per mo, 50 pgs for 3.99, 100 for 5.99, etc... And it prints photos too so I have finally printed some pics that I never used to look at. Very happy

Update: May 23, 2020 - This printer is not excellent for printing photos. On regular paper, it leaves lines every 1/4" where the printer stopped as it was printing. On photo paper, sometimes the printer slips, and leaves white gaps on the photos. It works well on b/w text printing on white printer paper. Not sure how much I like this printer now.

OK, lot's of reviews in here re trouble with setup. Here's my experience:
Got this printer 40 minutes ago. Set up was SO easy. I didn't look at a manual or have any issues at all - just did what the app and printer touchscreen told me to do. The "1-2-3" thing.
I'm running High Sierra on my Mac laptop and wanted to install it there and not on iphone. Following instructions as they pop up gives you that option. Followed directions, downloaded app, opened it, and continued.
It found and connected to wireless in about 5 seconds.
If you've got the repaid Insta-Ink just have your pin handy. I got it because a friend loves hers and has used it for years with no problems. You have to set up an account somewhere along the line, remember your password because you need it again.
I WILL say it feels kind of worrisome because they keep having you link to different sites to fill out different stuff, and there are a bunch of little sub-steps, but just go along with the flow and keep track a bit and it all comes together. And I'm 70 - pretty handy on my Mac but not particularly good at setting new stuff up. No trouble seeing the touchscreen with my old eyes.
It prints from everywhere on my laptop including ICloud - I don't want to print from my iphone so no idea on that. Computer found printer with no difficulty. Just have to affirm that it's the right one.
Snagged a little on first scan, worked second try, no idea. scanner is working very well. Print quality and (slowish) speed and build (I wouldn't want to, like, drop it) is fine for $99.
Haven't got Insta-Ink yet, so dunno if that will be timely but it's a great deal, actually.
I WILL update if there are problems down the road, but this is a very nice start. I actually bought a cable thinking it might be too much PIA to bother going wireless - meh. Nice not being tethered. Nice little super cheap home computer, very Mac compatible.
Edit - re Insta Ink. I did a LOT of heavy ink printing during the first week of owning this printer. Got my (larger) cartridges exactly on time to replace the spent ones. These will last longer than the ones included with the computer purchase. For me, so far, this whole process has been very smooth and easy. It's probably a good idea to have one extra set of cartridges on hand to cover any delays in shipping that could happen, but I expect to save money with this program. Love this little budget printer.

This installation was done on a late 2009 iMac running High Sierra. Basically, you just plug in the printer and turn it on. Remove the tape on the paper tray and a small piece of protective cardboard from inside the printer. Then go to HP's install site at 123.hp.com. (You can also do part of this directly from the printer if you want, but I think it's easier on the computer).
The install program will prompt you on how to properly install the ink and paper. There are helpful videos. The only thing that tripped me up was when it came time to generate a test print for the scanner. The install prompt said to click "ok" on the printer's tiny touch screen. But all I could see on the screen were prompts for my country and language. But, even though you will have already answered those on the website, answer them again on your printer's touch screen, and then you'll get to the "ok" prompt.
Once you're done, you still will have to tell your iMac - and I assume PC - that you have a new printer. That was easy. The iMac saw it and I just made it the new default printer.
On my iPhone I downloaded the HP Smart app from the Apple App Store. It was easy to print photos from my library. I did get a little confused when I was setting up to print email. It said it would send me a pin to complete the process and never did. Yet, when I checked my iPhone it saw the printer and printed out an email. Go figure. Maybe these instructions were for an older model.
Two other things: You will come to one of those privacy agreements at the end of the set up. Make sure you read them. I opted out of letting them monitor my printer or sending me updates. Also, I did not sign up for HP's instant ink program. It didn't look like it would save me that much money, given both the privacy and flexibility I'd be giving up. The cheapest plan is $3 a month -- $36 a year -- and allows you 100 pages a month. My printing needs are light, but there are times I might go over 100 a month. And replacement cartridges are $27 on Amazon. It just didn't make budget sense and it's allowing a backdoor into some of your most private documents. HP might not care, but a hacker might.
Hope this helps!

After reading reviews I set up the HP with my Android phone (go to google play-download HPsmart app) , unpackaged and plugged in the printer, opened the app on my phone (it automatically found the printer!), followed the instructions in the app, and it was good to go! Printed my first documents a half hour after unboxing! No set-up snags! Not one! I am beyond thrilled!
A few suggestions: 1. Know your wifi password, you will need that. 2. Follow the instructions on your phone's app and on the printer's screen exactly, do not try to skip steps. 3. Sign up for the free instant ink, you can always cancel it for free within 2 months. Don't try to bypass the instant ink sign up because, per other reviewers, trying to bypass that step caused set-up troubles. 3. You will need a few sheets of clean printer paper to run the alignment test and scan it (platen to right front corner-this will make sense when you go scan the alignment page). 4. During set up, the app on your pone will offer short videos of how to insert ink cartridges and complete alignment and other processes. Press play and watch these if you are unsure of process. 5. You can add tablets, laptops and/or desktop computers any time after set-up with your phone (iPhone or Android), just follow the instructions.
I am a not-so-tech-savvy 49 year old and it was easy for me. Just follow directions slowly and carefully and don't bypass steps. After set up on the phone, I opened my Chromebook, downloaded the app from PLAY STORE (not google play), opened the app, and voila the app found the printer and it was ready to print from! Then, I followed a similar process but with my iMac, and that works too! Then the Samsung tablet-yes! Seamless wifi connecting! The only wire needed is the one that plugs the printer into the wall outlet. I nearly giggled with glee. It is not very often that tech products are user friendly as I have found this one to be. I hope you have similar success. One thing to note, when I purchased on Amazon, a photo in the listing stated the printer is bluetooth compatible but I have not found that function. I did want that function, but really do not need it AS LONG AS wifi is working. Also note, you may connect a limit of 5 devices wirelessly. Third note, if you plan to connect the printer WIRED to your desktop computer, there are no ethernet or other cables in the box. You would need to purchase those separately. Have yet to see how much ink will cost us, but we really do not print much so hopefully ink will not break the bank. Best of luck to you with this product!

Appearance: The printer is very compact and does not take up much space at all- I love how sleek it looks.
Overall performance: It prints a lot slower than I would expect. It is also noisy when printing. So far, Ive only printed one 14 page document and one 76 page document. While doing so, there were 3 paper jams. Thus, I wouldn’t wait until the last minute to print a lengthy project on this printer. Otherwise, the print quality is nice. The scanner works fine also. Overall it gets the job done, but I think I expected better performance for the price.

The day after I received the printer I was ready to send it back for the reasons I originally posted. When you click on your Amazon orders and begin the return process, there is the option for support from Amazon. I got a quick response in the chat window, then a call from Amazon, who then connected me with HP, and I was very impressed with the service from both. Tech Kobe from HP remotely ran a few diagnostics, cleaned printer heads, etc., we restarted and the printer now exceeds my expectations. I don't know why I had problems out of the box, but those issues are over. Also, I had thought when the printer first ran that it was very slow, and that was to be expected from a $50 printer. But now it prints much faster, and very clearly. As a bonus the HP rep gave me 8 months free of their printer ink service. I am very happy with this printer now and recommend it. It does more than what I expected for $50!
Got the HP Envy 5055 today, and got it connected to wifi no problem. My problem, though is the printing quality is horrible. Parts of pages print normally, and look good. But usually headers or anything in bold is smudged, or looks double printed with two different fonts. I used the print quality diagnostic page tool, and the word "diagnostic" came out with the letter c drooping off to the side, and other words here and there come out strange as well. Are there any fixes for this? I'll have to return it if I can't figure something out. It looks like it would be a great budget printer if it works correctly. I'll gladly redo the review and rating if I can get this resolved. I've uploaded an example of a page I printed. Thanks for any help. GC in Charlotte
