Managing advertising preferences on Alexa

You have advertising settings that can be accessed directly from the Alexa app, Echo Show devices, or online at Alexa Privacy Settings.

These settings make it easy for you to manage advertising in your Alexa experience by choosing if you want to see or hear interest-based ads on your Alexa—from both third-party Alexa skills and content providers and, from Amazon.

There are experiences with Alexa, such as streaming music or the display on an Echo Show screen, that include ads. If you use these controls to choose not to receive interest-based ads, you will still see or hear ads on Alexa-enabled devices, but they may be less relevant to you. Learn more below:

What are interest-based ads?

Interest-based ads are used to highlight products and services that may be relevant to you based on your interests. For example, if you browse cake pans on Amazon.com, you may later receive a relevant ad on your Alexa-enabled device about cookware. Or, if you often ask Alexa to play a song from your favorite artist when listening to a third-party streaming service, you may get an ad when listening to that service promoting that artist’s upcoming tour.

How do I manage my Alexa advertising preferences for third parties?

Skills are like apps that help you do more with Alexa—like enjoy podcasts from your favorite content providers or play games. You can choose whether or not you want to receive interest-based ads from third-party skills or content providers on Alexa at any time.

We share advertising IDs with third-party skill and content providers that want to deliver ads on Alexa. An advertising ID is a unique string of letters and numbers that does not contain any information that directly identifies you—like your name or email address. It’s a privacy-protecting way to help advertisers deliver ads while keeping track of your preferences.

Each of your Alexa-enabled devices has unique advertising IDs specific to each skill developer and content provider. This is designed to prevent developers and advertisers from using the advertising IDs to create advertising profiles based on interactions across multiple developers’ skills. You can reset your Alexa advertising IDs at any time.

In addition, you can instruct skill developers and content providers not to use the advertising IDs to deliver interest-based ads to you. You only need to set this preference once for all third parties because this setting applies to your Alexa account.

Manage these preferences or reset your advertising IDs in the Alexa app and on Echo Show devices (Settings > Alexa Privacy > Manage Skill Permissions and Ad Preferences) or at Alexa Privacy Settings. We’re instructing third-party skill developers and content providers who serve interest-based ads to use advertising IDs for these advertising purposes no later than April 3, 2024.

How do I manage my Alexa advertising preferences for Amazon?

You can choose if you want to receive interest-based ads from Amazon on Alexa at any time. Manage these preferences in the Alexa app and on Echo Show devices (Settings > Alexa Privacy > Manage Your Alexa Data) or at Alexa Privacy Settings.
