I decided to have a go at home recording and spent a lot of time reviewing the different products. I actually purchased a Tascam DR-40X from Amazon but I found the user interface unintuitive and especially the bounce facility, In the end I decided it was too difficult for me to work with (but I am sure others would not). I was thinking of trying the Zoom H6 and even the much more expensive R8 as I liked the interface controls of both device but then I came across the R4, which is almost hidden within the Zoom range (maybe because it is relatively new). I instantly realised that this was a recorder designed for individual musicians, with a simplicity of use and layout as well as ease of use. I was sold. So far, in use it has proved to be everything the marketing hype (see the Zoom website for info) says it is. Within a couple of days I have recorded four different tracks and bounced them down in realtime to single stereo mix. I am particularly impressed with the sound of the recordings, although I have only listened to them through Sony MDR-7506 headphones. My feeling is that this device is ideal of the single musician wanting to play different instruments, bounce them down and layer songs and it is probably better for that purpose than say the Zoom H6, which I would imagine would be better for a band laying down live tracks. Anyway, I am so far more than delighted and I think on a price comparison with other Zoom and Tascam recorders it is well priced and worth the money.
