Blown away despite a small annoyance

Blown away despite a small annoyance
For some background, I'ma Solo Musician/Indie Producer and I've been looking for something that allows me to Record on the go, thatallows me to use as much of my existing equipment as possible. But of course I had a fairly tight budget. That's where this things comes in. 4 XLR Input With dedicated gain/48v control, 4 Head phones out puts with dedicated volumes, Run via USB or 2xAA batteries, and SD card memory. Now when I say this things has features, I mean it has everything I need. 4-Track recording when uses standalone, Seamless power-source transitions, decicated mutes for each input, Runs as a USB interface, Super light, and a very easy Menu system that has some Fun-OPtions, and well as real-use options. All this said I've never had anything else I can compare it to, but I've been enjoying it so much since I got it, that I'm finding any excuse to use it, haha. I honestly bought it for use with Music Projects, rather than what it's intended for.If you've been looking for something this, I say give it a shot. THat said your opinion/experience could be different!

I produce/edit podcasts for many clients. A couple of my clients use the Podtrack P4 and it has been pretty great for them. The Podtrack P4 is purpose-built for doing interviews, both in-person (with up to 4 mics) and via skype/zoom -- or via phone. With a mixer or other audio interfaces recording high quality remote interviews can get really complicated. It just works out of the box with the P4. So my clients can just focus on doing the interview, instead of all the tech.

The files they send me are good. Each person gets their own track so you can totally work it in post production. The preamps are good enough to use dynamic mics, like SM58s, etc....

I bought mine for doing field interviews. And, actually, because of the ease of recording calls and skype etc...., I sometimes opt for using this over my much more expensive RME Babyface Pro interface for remote calls. And, the safety of recording to an external device is nice, don't have to worry about a computer glitch losing the interview.

You really can't go wrong with this unit. I have a few nits, but they aren't even worth mentioning, really. For the price you are paying, what this thing can do is nuts. It replaces so many pieces of kit and gets the job done.

There are quite a few recorders that can also work as a USB interface, but you are usually have to pay quite a bit to find a unit that will do both at once. Most will record OR work as a USB interface, but not both. The Zoom P4 is an exception. Not only can it simultaneously record and interface, but it will handle up to four microphones simultaneously, recording each source to a separate track on its SD card (not included). It can also handle inputs from an iPhone (useful for phone interviews) or iPad (useful for adding external sound effects). It is generous with its physical controls, too. There are dials to adjust input on each of the four channels, and also separate dials for the four headphone jacks. It will run for a few hours on batteries, meaning you can use this for street interviews or other location recordings.

Of course, at this price, there are some limitations. The big one is that it only goes up to 16-bit recording. If you want 24-bit or 32-bit, you'll have to look elsewhere. However, that's still CD-quality, and the sound recorded is very clean, with no obvious hiss. The device also includes digital limiters, meaning you turn the gain up a bit without worrying that the audio will clip.

The P4 has LEDs on its buttons. These are really bright and annoying. If a sound effect is added to one of the four programmable "pad" buttons, that light shines with a light bright enough to read by. I ended up covering all the buttons with black electrical tape, which brings the brightness into an acceptable range. But this is a minor quibble. At present, there is no other device in this price range that comes close to the features and quality the P4 offers.

For the price point I'm very impressed with the quality of this recorder, and I like the way it takes AA batteries and a standard SD card for transferring files from a card reader. Rather than reiterating many of the positive remarks that many have already said, I'll add a minor annoying feature that nobody seems to have mentioned. This device goes through batteries pretty fast, which isn't a big deal except for the annoyance of having to reset time and date every time batteries are changed. It's a little clunky, perhaps will get easier since I need to reset time and date every week. Even so, it's raised the quality of my recordings compared to what I was doing before.

Really nice peice of equipment, I have found it very easy to set up and use.
Audio is good expect is someone gets over excited the playback sounds terrible. Limiter does not seem to help sudden loud noises.

Setup is easy, I record a Podcast in a Bar and only takes 5 minutes to set everything up (Inc mics).
Editing however is a fail.
Wavelab Cast Download software does not download, I use the link but the code provided does not work! Disappointing.
Luckily I have other software such as Mixpad and it was fairly easy to transfer files over to that for editing

I haven’t REALLY tested it completely, but ran it through a few recordings and seems to be spot on. I think for all it does well worth the money.

I heard a noise sometimes, I am tracing it because it disappears sometimes. no more issues. It feels very professional, durable, and solid. You have to read the user manual but it's ok.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Sound & Versatility
Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2024

I've owned and used the Zoom P4 for over 6 months at the time of this review. It has held up nicely with no issues. I'm quite gentle with it, so I can't speak to it's durability.

Pros:

The audio quality is crystal clear.

There is plenty of clean gain available.

Each of the 4 mic inputs has +48 phantom power & mute option independently from one another (options that many interfaces and mixers do not have).

Though I have not taken the P4 anywhere, it's very lightweight and portable.

It has options to use either batteries or 5V usb to power it. And when using batteries, it does power up for quite a while. Much longer than any recording session I've ever done.
This option gives the ability to have battery backup for recordings.

I like the ability to connect phone and computer to it and send and receive audio from both devices.

The P4 is a great option to use as a phone audio interface. I've used it quite a bit just to record high quality audio to my phone. And it's great to use for clean audio on phone calls as well.

The mix- function works flawlessly. Making it super easy to use the P4 for call in conversations without feedback echo to the caller.

It will record hours and hours of audio with even a small 8gb micro SD card installed.

The P4 allows for dual (or triple) recording simultaneously.
Recording on an installed SD card and a computer and/or phone (or any other USB or trs/trrs device).
This makes this interface very versatile.

It's super easy to record or load pre-recorded sound to the sound pad.

The sound pad has a volume control, just like the 4 mic gains and 4 headsets.

Cons:

16-bit/44.1 khz max recording/transmission resolution.
Most USB interfaces & mixers have a minimum of 16-bit/48 khz resolution.
I will say that in practice I cannot distinguish the difference in sound between the 2, however.

Because of ultra compact size of this unit, there is no XLR or line output. Though you can use one of the headphone outputs if necessary, the sound quality will suffer a bit, as noise (hiss) will be introduced. The higher the volume, the more the noise.

The P4's all plastic exterior doesn't instill confidence that it will withstand accidental abuse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should Have Bought This First!

I should have bought this package first before I bought the other one. I wanted to get into podcasting but I made the mistake of trying to save money and bought a sound card and microphone bundle. It did not quite work out like I wanted it to. The condensor microphone needs phantom power to function properly which the sound card does not have. This bundle made things a lot easier. It's plug and play and will run off a micro USB phone charger. The headphones are perfect. Very nice quality and has phenomenal stereo sound and the dynamic microphone did not pick up any background noises while I recorded my first episode.

Good piece of gear. Best part is the mobility. Fairly easy to use and set up. Would recommend you research it as I did to ensure it suits. It may not be the right decision for everyone, but for me it works really well.
