4 out of 5 stars
Compact, versatile SBC for building a personal cloud or NAS
The ZimaBoard 832 is a compact and attractive looking single board computer with lots of expansion capabilities, making it a versatile system to build a low power and ultra small form factor home cloud system. The design is simple but looks great with the heatsink fins dominating the top of the case. Most of the ports, including the dual Gigabit Ethernet (Gbe) ports, USB ports and Mini DisplayPort. The front has the dual SATA ports with a single SATA power connector in middle. A SATA cable to connect a 2.5" SATA hard drive or SSD is included. On the right side is a PCIe x4 port, which is handy to add a NVMe SSD or 2.5Gbe adapter. Since the ZimaBoard 832 touts itself as a server system for setting up a personal home cloud or NAS, having the ability to add different storage options is important. The 832 comes with 32GB of storage, with Debian/CasaOS installed. The SATA ports is useful for adding TB of storage with cheaper SATA drives. If faster storage is needed, add a PCIe x4 to M.2 NVMe adapter which you can buy for less than $15 to add fast NVMe storage. The processor in the 832 is an Intel Celeron N3450, a 4-core CPU that runs at 1.1GHz and can turbo up to 2.2GHz. This N3450 is an old and under powered processor, but should be able to operate just fine as NAS or home cloud server. Many mini PCs in the price range of the 832 use the newer Celeron N5105, which is more capable 4-core processor. In Passmark benchmarks, the N5105 doubles the performance of the N3450 in both single thread and multi thread benchmarks and it's unfortunate ZimaBoard didn't add a more recent processor in the 832. The 832 has 8GB of RAM without the ability to add more. The 832 comes pre-installed with Debian 11 Linux with CasaOS. CasaOS is a home cloud system that allows you to quickly setup a home cloud with its user friendly interface. It support the Docker app ecosystem, allowing easy installation of over 100K apps, including NextCloud and Plex. I was able to quickly setup media shares on the 832, upload a video and have it shared on my home network. I connected to the 832 from my Surface Laptop 3 (running Windows 11) and was able to access the share via SMB and stream the video without any issues. Setting up a share like this would have taken some Linux and Debian knowledge, but with CasaOS, it was dead simple. The usage scenarios for the ZimaBoard 832 is limitless and I'm planning to add a simple storage array using SATA drives, or with the USB 3.0 ports and build a cheap and compact personal cloud system.

Recently I went down the rabbit hole looking for a feature rich SBC to use as a home media server (Jellyfin). And with the shortage of Raspberry pi's i decided to give this ZimaBoard a try.

I like that its packaged in a housing already with passive cooling through large fins. The board has a PCIe slot, 2 sata ports and 2 USB ports for expansion and storage. The board also has 2 ethernet ports, So perfect for making your own router. Low TDP means no real impact on your power bill

CasaOS is pretty easy to use. Most of the common applications are easy to download right from the included app store. You can dive into terminal and get real advanced into everything. I dont care for linux all that much so im gonna try installing windows are some point, Which you can because its a intel x86 processor and not a ARM like all the various pi's

When I saw this, I was eager to get my hands on it and see what it could do. So far, it will work to set up a NAS combined with a USB-connected drive rack, but the other features (widgets) that can be installed into and from within the OS are not the best options, even for a Linux-based device.

👀 This was a KICKSTARTER funded start-up, and every time I supported something on this platform it always ended badly, so not expecting much here. I'm not thrilled with the overall design and connectivity of this device.

If the person who buys this likes to play around with Linux-based systems, it will probably provide hours of enjoyment, but for people with the limited time that need to deploy something fast, this is going to be a pain.

Looking at it, my first thoughts were "odd but ok," and when it arrived, it was indeed an odd device. There is one PCIe connector on its right side and two SATA drive connections on the bottom. The kit comes with a SATA cable to drive the SATA connector adapter cable, but it only has one connector to provide power to a drive. If the second SATA connection is used, the drive will need its own power and SATA cable.
» On the site, an optional cable can provide power to two external SATA drives. Why this is not the standard adapter in the kit makes me shake my head.

► Based on what I've read, it appears I can use the external SSD or one of the two external SATA drives for boot and OS, which would overcome the limited capability of the internal eMMC SSD, but there is still the memory limitation.
► If only they allowed the option to upgrade the eMMC SSD, this would score a lot higher.

❌ On the website, under OMV Introduction, there is documentation on how to access the BIOS in order to make changes, well this can only be done if there is a monitor connected, and since the mini display port doesn't work, it literally means there is no access to the BIOS.
👀 Right up front, this comes with a mini Display Port connection for a monitor. Who the heck still uses these ports in today's world??? I still have three old ver 1.2 minis DP to HDMI adapters, but not one of them will allow a connected monitor to work. I tried four different make and model monitors and got no joy. Without web connectivity to the device, there would be no access. So this means that one needs to have a PC or laptop with a browser on the same network in order to access the device.
» With the PCIe connection, I could plug in a lower-end vid card, but then I can't run an additional M.2 SSD. It's one or the other. Given that that internal eMMC SSD cannot be upgraded, I'm limited to what I can install and have fast access two if I have a vid card instead of an SSD connected to the PCIe slot.
» There is also no upgrading the memory. This version comes with 8GB, and while that may serve well for some of the applications, and widgets it can run, it won't be sufficient for any of the newer software that needs more.

There are two USB 3.0 Type-A ports which can be used for peripheral devices or, as I mentioned, connected to an external drive enclosure(s) that do not have any network connectivity.

Then all of this needs to be placed in some kind of enclosure to ensure none of the cables get tugged or moved unless it's parked in a dark corner where nothing but spiders travel.

The apps that can be installed from the included widget list do allow for a few options, mostly to allow it to act as a storage control unit or video streaming.

I had hoped that by going to the company website, I would be able to get more detailed information on its abilities and updated drivers. The site does offer some good information but nothing about the hardware.

I will keep it connected to an external four-drive USB-connected enclosure for some backup purposes, as I don't have the time to mess around and deal with the limited options it offers. The USB ports are only 3.0 instead of 3.2, so it will be much slower than other options.

Overall, if you are someone that loves to waste time mucking about with Linux based devices with limited memory, then you would probably enjoy this device.

My instinct is to give this three stars, but I know a couple of people that will get month's worth of entertainment out of playing with it, so I won't take just my own perspective into account when rating it.

First of all, regardless of any functions or technical details, the Zimaboard (832) looks incredibly nice and polished. It's actually just a little bit bigger than a Raspberry Pi and has all the necessary IO ports similar to a PC (e.g., mini display port, usb ports, two ethernet ports, two SATA ports etc.)

The 832 model has 4 CPU cores, 8 GB of memory and a 32 GB storage. It is based on the Linux Debian system that comes with CasaOS pre-installed. This makes it user-friendly, particularly for newbies to building projects on SBCs.

What I found advantageous about the Zimaboard compared to Raspberry Pi is that the Zimaboard has a more powerful graphics processor and it has built-in connectivity interfaces (Wifi, bluetooth, ethernet, usb 3.0), which reduced the need for additional hardware. The onboard eMMC storage of Zimaboard is also faster and more reliable than the microSD storage of Raspberry Pi.

This little SBC is a solid little device that can run multiple operating systems from Linux to Windows and much much more.

I'm not a Linux person but the Zima Board comes loaded with CasaOS which (from my experience) seems to be very easy to setup and use. I setup a personal cloud service to back up my photos via a very stable IOS and Android app.

My next thing to try is to setup a local media server once I add-on an external storage drive.

The hardware setup is also very flexible with the ability to add storage and external devices plus you have two network ports in case you want to run this as a firewall.

This is a great device to learn on and eventually use as a permanent feature in your home network setup.

I bought the ZimaBoard as a small server for my barn which lacks heating and air conditioning. The ZimaBoard's big heatsink looks perfect, and removes the possibility of a fan failing in the harsh environment. It hasn't faced summertime heat yet, but it runs cool so far. I'll update this review if something goes wrong when the hot weather arrives.

It seems like the ZimaBoard would be comparable to the Raspberry Pi 4, but as much as I love the RasPi and the company's mission, the ZimaBoard is really in a different league. It seems snappy, and my benchmarking confirms it: The ZimaBoard is much faster, and it runs amd64 architecture which is nice. It has a bigger footprint than the RasPi, but it's still tiny. Quality is far nicer than I expected at this price point, and it feels heavy and solid. So far so good. It appears that this will be a great little headless server, and might even have enough grunt for desktop use.

UPDATE 07/23/2023:
It's summertime and my ZimaBoard has stayed up without a hitch, even in an environment without air conditioning. This week I moved 7TB of data through it with rsync, which caused a continuous load of about 35% CPU usage for 24 hours, and it handled the task, no problem. And this was during a heat wave with 100°F (~38°C) daytime temps. Once the CPU nears 50°C it throttles down, keeping temps in check, and without much performance hit in my case. Turns out, the ZimaBoard is as rugged as it looks, and the passive heatsink does its job, even in the heat.

Overall the device is okay however the device came with several issues which had to be fixed straight off the bat.

The CasaOS version was several revisions out of data arriving with version 0.4.1, the current version being 0.4.9. I was wondering why it was so out of date and then I noticed that apt was giving me key signature errors.. I was like okay that doesn't seem great. Turned out that the date was so incorrect the ntp server was rejecting the connection from the device. I had to set the ntp sync to manual, manually adjust the date and then set it back to manual and reboot the service. Once that happened I had 557 out of date packages. After rebooting the zimaboard, I resolved most of the update issues like fixing the samba config, updating the casaos image and fixing broken packages.

The overall security by default is pretty abysmal so I highly suggest to setup the device with no ports forwarded/exposed on your network.

All in all the product is good just as long as you know your way around linux administration and troubleshooting as you may run into problems.
