Pretty solid with one exception

Pretty solid with one exception
The set up is fairly easy. The system consists of two parts. The transmitter and the receiver. The transmitter which is the bigger part of the system plugs straight into the wall. This is the part of the system on which you indicate the range of the wireless fence. There is a high / low toggle switch and a dial going from 1 to 8. Which these controls and the guidelines provided in the guide documents and which using a little trial and error, you can set the boundaries of the wireless fence to the desired area. The second component is the receiver. This unit is used as a collar on your dog and provides a shock when the dog exits the determined perimeter. When setting the perimeter initially, the receiver is set to alarm-only mode, meaning no shock will be delivered. Once you set the desired perimeter and test it you can enable to shock inducing feature. It has intensities from level 1 to level 5. Through my measurements this was delivering anywhere from 0.05 v to 1.5 v (I could be wrong here because I am not in expert in electronics, I just used a multimeter). For testing purposes I also delivered the shock to myself, levels 1 through 5. 1 feels like what a 9v battery on your tongue feels like. 5 is a much stronger unpleasant shock that made me not want to try it a second time. The receiver will produce audio feedback when the dog is exiting the wireless fence area so you can train your dog to respond to these sounds. You can also put down the flags and train your dog visually. The maximum duration that the receiver will shock the dog is 15 seconds.I have no been able to test the unit on my own dog as training will take quite some time but functionally the system appears to be sound. The problem is with training the dog to understand what the boundary flags and the audio signals mean. I’m sure it’s possible but it will take some time.As mentioned before the transmitter plugs straight into the wall and can be left plugged in. The receiver does have a battery that needs to be recharged. It comes with a wall plug however the connector that the receiver uses to charge is not a standard mini or micro USB. It’s some type of 2 pin plug that seems very fragile and likely to break. If one of the pins bend or fall off, you might have to throw the entire system out. This seems like a big design flaw you me as the protruding pins are on the collar receiver unit itself and not on the wall plug charger. Again, if the pin is bent or is broken, the system is a write off.In the event the plug does not break, the system is pretty consistent in enforcing the boundary set by the user. I would 100% try the level of shock you’re using on your pet on yourself first to make sure it’s not too much.Overall, with the exception of the major design flaw in the plug, it’s a solid system. I’ve included pictures of the plug for you to see what I mean. It also comes with a bunch of adaptor plugs for mains power plugs of various countries – again, pictures included.

One of the problems with the Petsafe wireless stuff is that it is so expensive... But then again you are paying for a fantastic warranty. I had one of these go wrong (it stopped beeping) and they replaced it very quickly and with no hassle. The same with one of my three base-units. So I guess if I can pay a bit more and get that level of customer service, I am relatively happy.

When you look at the costs of wire fences compared to these wireless ones, and add in the fact that with these you can just move them (you could, I suppose take it camping with you if you had a power supply!) and you can extend the range by adding another transmitter which takes about 2 minutes with no fiddling; the fact you are paying twice as much for a collar isn't really a huge deal... But I still cringe every time I have to get another :) - They are rechargeable though which saves money on those ridiculously expensive batteries.

The collar bands that come with it are pretty good, but because I have different dogs with different sized necks they all have their own size needs, so I tend to buy other nylon collars with 3/4 inch ish bands and butcher them to fit the PetSafe dongles. If PetSafe read this, could you maybe put 2 or 3 different collar colours in the packet in your next model? It wouldn't cost much and you know, variety is the spice of life!

One of my pups spends half his life in rivers/mud/sea , or trying to dig his way to Australia. He puts these collars through stresses they were never meant to have, and yet they seem to survive. They don't look very good after a few weeks on him, but they still work.

Petsafe is an amazing company and other than a couple of hardware problems, everything I have had from them is great and if I can, I buy what I need for the 3 terrors from them.

I was looking for photos to post, all I can find is ones of Hector and Rosie after finding a can of red paint, and deciding it was the best toy ever. I guess that at least shows that these things stand up to some abuse. But, the red is paint so don't worry. I think they watched too much Mad Max as puppies. This is why my dogs can't have nice things.

Anyway yes... Expensive, but good products, fantastic customer service, but I have had a couple of things break on me. That being said, when I have bought things from companies that are not Petsafe, they have broken more quickly; so Petsafe are still winning in the long run.

Hopefully, you find this helpful!

I've been using this product for over 2 months, and I trust it more than a physical barrier.

Application:
We have 2 dogs, one older, tougher, more passive dog and a younger, higher energy german shepherd. The younger one would take off and there's nothing we could do to stop her. She ripped tethers out of walls and tore the clip out of her harness. With a physical fence, she found a way over, under, or through. With the petsafe, she breeched once willfully, and after that, nothing. I leave them out most of the day, without any problems. I have 2 emitters set up, one inside and one outside in a weatherproof insulated box, overlapping in two areas.

Pros:
The collars rechargable batteries last very well, and neither dog has seemed to figure out that's what's causing their discomfort. The training manual is fairly simple and easy to read, and you should follow it to the letter, however it works better for simple yards than a more complicated one, in the simple yard the flags stand out and the training is easier, with other distractions they basically ignore the flags, and kind of figure it out as they go.
It's easy to adjust the size, with 2 people at least.

Cons:
The price. We spent almost $1000, and although it is considerably cheaper than a regular fence, it's still a lot of money, if you think about it. The perception of security isn't as strong for other people (even though the dogs will absolutely not cross it), as a regular fence, but other people don't know that.
Metal definitely messes with the signal, even away from the emitter, a metal shed set off the collars even though it should have been within the boundary, which isn't a big deal really, but good to know.

Overall I'm happy with it, and if I want to expand the area its relatively easy. If anything changes in a year time I'll update this review.

This is my second unit. My first one quit working after a few years. Unfortunately, this replacement unit only lasted about four months and then quit working. Good news, I called the company and explained what was happening and they sent me out a new unit right away. Cannot say enough good about the Pet Safe Company. So I say yes, go ahead and purchase this product. They work great and the company stands behind their product. Very happy.

This collar is our second purchase from this company for a new (second) pup. We absolutely love the system. No digging up the lawn, no wires etc... it’s simple to train the dogs. Time consuming, but worth every moment once they can walk, play, run freely without a worry of them leaving the property. We have neighbouring dogs that come near, but our dogs don’t leave. This collar is actually being replaced because a piece broke off. The customer service was amazing and based off of pictures, sent us a replacement that should be here in a week. Fantastic company!

Great extender for the wireless fence, it was able to extend the play area for my 2 big dogs. With this unit
I was able to extend so my dogs could reach the forest area near my house as they like to sleep under the trees and they can better do their job of chasing off coyotes while staying safely on our property . the price tag was great and no need to switch to an expensive set up. Highly recommend if you are looking for more space for your dogs.

We’ve tried a couple wireless gos dog fences. Which would randomly shock the dog but this is flawless so far ! No random shocks . It’s been one day and our dog knows his boundaries. It’s expensive but works!
Very easy to set up . Well worth it as long as it lasts.

This came packaged as a brand new product. It comes with rechargeable correction device, recharging cord, cut to size collar (had to cut about 6" off the end for our #110 German), plenty of flags, and excellent directions (the directions give you every detail that you need to know), and the transmitter that gives our German a 3/4 of an acre to roam. No more chasing the deer or visiting the neighbor's female dog. What a piece of mind this product has given us. I am thinking about buying another transmitter to expand his area.

2.0 out of 5 stars Perimeter keeps fluctuating and I found Dead Zones
Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2024
Style: Extra Transmitter OnlyVerified Purchase
I should first note I have a two story home with a metal roof. I had hoped 2 stories would help. The instructions advises metal roofs can "reduce" the range, but that is not my issue. The worst issue was I found dead zones 10' wide where the dog could run out with no tone/correction. This was made worse when I tried combining a second transmitter. The other issue was the perimeter kept fluctuating by 5-7'. How do I train my dog with flags when the flag location is intermittently wrong. If this is all metal related I realized most homes are filled with large amounts of metal beyond just a possible roof (garage door, cars, appliances, computers, tools, plumbing, etc.) My dead zones were near the garage which makes me think it was all the common metal items interfering with the signal. I gave this 2 stars instead of one in case it really is my roof causing the issue.
