Out of the gate, I think the best feature of this laptop is probably the fact that the screen can lay completely flat. I don't really know what benefit this has in the real world, but it does it well.
For everything else, let's go through some of them.
The description says that the AMD Ryzen 5 7530U processor is 8-core/16-thread. This is incorrect. This CPU is 6-core, not 8. The processor itself is about 1.5 years old and it is a standard laptop CPU. You won't be able to do any high end gaming with it, but if that's your intention then you wouldn't (shouldn't) be buying this laptop. It is perfectly fine for regular multitasking office or home use activities.
It comes with 16GB of DDR4 3200mhz RAM, 8 of which is an upgradeable SK Hynix stick and the other 8 being soldered to the motherboard. You *should* be able to replace the 8GB stick with a 32GB stick and get a combined total of 40MB.
The onboard graphics adapter is and AMD Radeon with 512MB of dedicated RAM, though it will share with the system RAM. It is capable of displaying 1920x1080 resolution at 60 hertz on the 15.6" TN Panel LCD screen.
The SSD M.2 storage drive is a Solidigm P41 Plus 512GB 2280 removable stick and there is only 1 M.2 slot available. You will be able to replace this with a larger drive, if you wish to.
The onboard battery is a 42Wh, 3640mAh (typical) / 3550mAh (rated) cell that does provide pretty decent battery life for this laptop. I didn't test the number of hours I could get on a charge, but I was able to use it semi-regularly for a few days while on battery alone.
The other features that it comes with are WIFI 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. There are 4 USB ports, (1) 2.0 Type-A, (2) 3.2 Type-A & (1) Type-C. No Thunderbolt ports. There is also (1) HDMI port. You won't be burning any data cables up due to speedy transfers on this, but these should work well enough in most cases.
I should mention too that the camera has a privacy shutter. I always like this feature as nothing beats a good old physical barrier. Maybe I should have said this was its best feature above.
In all, this is a decent laptop for a casual user. Everything worked as it should and I was able to score a 5967 on PCMARK 10 with it, scoring well in Spreadsheets & App Start-up scores. Both of which are important for casual users.

The Ryzen 5 7530U is a 6 CPU, 12 thread design, contradicting the Amazon product description of “8 CPU and 16 thread”. This is a mid-range laptop, so I would not expect it to run heavy games. A unique feature is that the screen can open to 180 degrees, although I personally don't have a use case for it. The laptop is reasonably thin, but the large rubber leg strip adds about 5mm to the maximum thickness. This may be worth it due to the improved ventilation.
The setup was straightforward and most of the updates were installed the first time without a problem. For a couple of updates, I had to reboot the laptop twice. After the installation, I ran the PASSMARK benchmark on the laptop and obtained a total score of 3638. This score indicates that the laptop under review is slightly below average in terms of speed when compared to all those tested with the PASSMARK app (only faster than 40% of all laptops tested). However, this should not be a surprise as this is a mid-range laptop. It should be noted that the CPU and SSD performance is above average. The overall lower PASSMARK score was impacted by the lack of a dedicated graphics card, resulting in non-stellar 2D and 3D performance.
What I like:
- Less than 9 seconds super-fast bootup time to the login prompt
- Feather-light quiet keyboard with just enough tactile feedback. Consistent actuation and speed typing accuracy is very high
- Trackpad’s sensitivity is just right, reducing false clicks
- Battery management software built into myASUS app to extend battery life (Maximum Lifespan Mode to keep the battery at 60% charge)
- CPU fairly fast on PASSMARK (18035, faster than 64% of all CPUs tested)
- SSD is also very fast (18568, faster than 67% of all SSDs tested)
- OBS Studio screen records at 1080P 60Hz without any problems with AMD’s H.264 hardware accelerator
- Hibernation mode works well (not all laptops do)
- 16GB of RAM
- 512GB of SSD
- Military-grade durability
What I don’t like:
- TN LCD panel has lesser colour accuracy, contrast depends on viewing angle and hard to achieve a consistent deep black
- Slightly yellow tint display out of the box but that can be largely corrected using Windows colour calibration. (reduce both Red and Green sliders slightly in the RGB adjustments step)
- Slower wifi speed of only 319mbps download and 177mbps upload on a gigabit wifi but this could be a driver issue. (my other laptops are downloading in the 500-600mbps range)
- Lower speaker volume out of the box but that could be a driver issue
- Non-stellar 2D and 3D performance
- The raised logo on the outside of the lid. This makes the lid less smooth and adds more thickness to the laptop
- I often lose the mouse pointer when editing Google Docs. I have confirmed that this issue is caused by the AMD graphics card or driver. Disabling Graphics Acceleration in Chrome seems to fix it. I have also updated to the latest recommended AMD graphics driver, version 24.3.1, which has resulted in some improvements. Hopefully, the issue will be fully resolved in the next driver release.
In conclusion, the ASUS M1502YA-AS51-CA laptop under review is a mid-range laptop good for everyday computing, Zoom meetings, and YouTube playback. It has an above-average CPU and SSD performance. While countless games can be played on this laptop, it is not a gaming laptop for graphics-demanding games. At the time of writing, it is on sale for $699.00 which appears to be a fair price for a business laptop with Military-grade durability.
