Care Tips for Swiss Army Knives

The various tools of a Swiss Army Knife are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. To maintain Swiss Army Knives, use a 15°–20° angle whetstone for sharpening, or a cooling grinding wheel. Clean by opening and closing in warm water, then apply oil. Avoid dishwashers to prevent damage.

History and Heritage In 1884, Master Cutler Karl Elsener opened a cutlery shop in Ibach, Switzerland. There, he and the cutlers; union he formed produced the finest steel cutlery, finished with the now-famous proprietary edge preferred globally by professional and home cooks. In 1891, Karl supplied the Swiss Army with its standard issue Soldiers Knife and in 1897 with the Officers Knife. In 1921, after the death of his mother, Victoria, and with the advent of stainless steel, then known as inoxydable and used in the production of his cutlery, Karl changed the name of the company to Victorinox. It is from those humble beginnings that a worldwide icon was born. Today, Victorinox is still owned and operated by the Elsener family, and both the company and family still resides in the small village of Ibach, Switzerland. Care Tips for Swiss Army Knives The various tools are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. Sharpening To re-sharpen your knife, use a whetstone at an angle of 15 20. This will result in a cutting angle of 30, 40. If sharpening on a grinding wheel, always cool with plenty of water to avoid excessive temperatures and the resulting damages that may occur. Cleaning After you used your Swiss Army Knife for all of its various applications, such as cutting open numerous boxes, you may notice that the blades begin to stick together. Opening and closing the blades in warm water several times will allow the tools to easily move again. Once they have dried, it is recommended, to apply a small drop of oil between the blade or tool shank and the spring. To optimally maintain the locking mechanism, periodically apply a drop of our recommended Swiss Army Knife Oil. Never put Swiss Army Knives in the dishwasher.

This is a nice, small knife that can be carried comfortably in your pants pocket without creating a large lump. The knife blade is quite narrow and small, but it's extremely sharp. The scissors are tiny and seemingly useless, but they're so handy. Whip them out to snip open a small package or a loose thread etc.
Also included in this small but useful knife is a nail file, tweezers and a toothpick.

This is my second Victorinox Classic. Previously I had purchased the original (non-alox) variety and enjoyed it thoroughly until I lost it. This time around I decided to pay the extra ten dollars and get the Alox version. This version is even more compact than the original and with the metal scales it is also more durable. Something to note is that the Alox version does NOT come with a toothpick or tweezers which I did not know at the time of purchase, however I have not missed either tool and much more appreciate the slimmer profile. For the price I paid I am very happy with this little pocket knife and I expect it to last a life-time and it is backed up by a warranty. It is the perfect size to have on a keyring, but I prefer to wear it around my neck on a chain. Being a city-boy I mostly use the scissors for cutting off loose threads, clothing tags etc. and the small knife is useful for opening more Amazon packages. The nail file is high quality and great for grooming. I do not think I would go back for the Classic SD (non-alox) as I don't think the toothpick or tweezers were really that useful nor would the larger profile be a good trade-off. This is the best small pocket knife for urban use. It weighs basically nothing and has only the essential tools you need and is durable enough to last you a life-time.

I own 3 Victorinox knives, and this little one is by far my favourite. Let me elaborate.

First of all, this is SMALL, like very small. I thought I had a decent idea of the size looking at pictures online, but it’s much more tiny than pictures suggest. This is a definite positive, since I can carry it around with me and not even know it’s there. Using a rubber/vinyl necklace, I literally wear it on my neck sometimes and it looks surprisingly good. You can also add it to your keychain, and, with the weight of around 2 quarters and a nickel, you’d forget the thing is there.

Second, the tools. It has nothing you don’t need; only the most essential, barebone tools that one may need in their day to day. Need a small pair of scissors to cut open a stubborn bag or a coupon? Need a small, handy blade that can cut anything from oranges to boxes as quickly as a larger knife? Have long nails that frequently require filing? Perhaps a small screwdriver?

Yeah this little thing can do everything I just mentioned above, in a tool that’s around 2” long.

Finally, the quality. Despite the small size, I can feel the quality. I’ve had counterfeits of this knife before, and the Swiss quality of manufacturing really stands out here. All the tools pivot smoothly from their positions, no creaking or other weird noises and feels very dense for the size. I can easily see this thing lasting me a lifetime (many cases of these knives lasting 70 years+ exist online). Oh, did I mention it has EXCELLENT tweezers and a handy little toothpick too? Yeah, those are added, free of charge.

After reading my review, if you don’t buy this knife you’re truly missing out. One of the best purchases I’ve made on Amazon, and I don’t regret it in the slightest.

I have carried a victorinix pocket knife for over twenty years and I thought I’d lost mine, so bought another to replace it. This arrived and was exactly similar to my venerable old pen knife that I love so much. It truly is an Every Day Carry EDC, and I don’t like to leave the house without it in my pocket.

I’ve used it from everything from slicing apples to repairing bedside lamps with the screwdriver end.

It takes a great edge that stays for months in spite of the abuse I give it, cutting cardboard or fabric, the scissors have been put to paper, trimming broken finger nails, the occasional use to cut soft copper wire 22-26 gauge, or human hair, and as I get older the toothpick sees more and more use.

Hey, I found the knife I lost, but it’s a great feeling knowing I’ve another shiny brand new that I can gift or take to the grave with me. :D

The build quality is stellar and the blades are razor sharp (no need to sharpen if you don’t have the equipment, it will perform!).
