Ideally, a game or trail cam should have a way to turn it off and on remotely or externally so that you have ample time to set up the mount before it starts recording. Unfortunately, this camera only has a switch on the inside, giving you approximately 5 seconds to close the casing and mount it before unnecessary shots start filling up the card. Of course, you can mount it first and attempt to open the casing from the side, but in tight spaces, that becomes an issue. Works fine around narrow tree trunks, and with the included wall mount, it's even easier.
The LCD screen isn't the best though, but at least you have the option of reviewing the vids/pics on-board without having to take the card out or access the camera via USB cable. The redundancy in power delivery is very good - USB charging, solar AND a 4 AA compartment for use in cold weather. I can get behind that. The solar charging actually does pretty well at topping up the battery during the day.
PIR sensor sensitivity is only okay, even on the highest sensitivity level. There is no "test mode" like they mention in the manual - you basically need to adjust the "operate interval" in setup mode to over 3 minutes (as well as the screen saver to save on battery) so that you can test the IR sensor range (a light flashes red) in SETUP mode. That part was a bit confusing. And when the sensor is triggered either during the day or at night, the lag between triggers is a bit too long imo. That means that regardless if you select a 1,2 or 3 shot capture, once the last photo is taken, there's a lag before the sensor can be triggered again. For some reason, this is less of an issue in video mode.
Speaking of, the video capture is pretty good. Resolution is true to its pixel rating, although the camera itself doesn't have the best colour capture. Most pics and vids are washed out, with flat colours. But the fps is good, with no skipping and is more reminiscent of what you'd get with an action cam. So points there. Unfortunately, the picture resolution is below par. At all resolutions, it almost seems like there's a filter being applied internally that bloats and blurs the pixels so you can't get a clear image. Honestly doesn't make much sense since the video capture is on point. And there's no setting to remedy the phenomenon. Strange. Average video size @ 10s/2K is between 50-60 Mb, and 2K pics are 6-8 Mb.
Either way, as a very basic game cam, it does the job. Only would recommend using the video capture feature though, and it can do over 2 minutes at a time. For small trees you'll need to wrap the strap around at least twice, but the clasp holds fine. And there's a standard tripod mounting thread on the back in case that's your preferred method. Overall, it isn't bad at all, and since you get an SD card with it that can handle 4K video, you can always just pop the card out and use it for other things if you're not using the cam. Bonus. 4/5 stars from me.
I would recommend this product.
I love less that the videos are in AVI, which my Mac can't read. But my Dell can so it's all good. I recommend this camera at this great price.
