After using the VIOFO a229 Dual 2K dash camera for three months I can honestly say this is by far the nicest dash cam I've owned so far. It is also the most expensive camera I've had and I have to admit, the quality of both the build and video is superior to my previous cameras so I feel the price is justified. In my experience you truly do get what you pay for.

Video quality in the daylight is very nice. In the dark or at night, much like every other dash camera you do lose detail but it is still good enough to do the job it is intended for. I have yet to see any dash camera that produces excellent night results. That just asks too much of the current technology and to be honest, if it was able to happen, the price of the dash cam would be much more expensive. But I'm am completely happy with the video output.

VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure you order and use a recommended MicroSD card. Others have had issues but I made sure I got a quality card and haven't had any issues yet.

I also ordered the polarized lens cover which helps with reflections and glare on the windshield. And I have purchased the Bluetooth remote trigger to lock videos and it works very well so far.

I have no issues recommending this camera to others. My only advice would be to save it to a wish list and monitor for price changes as it does go on sale for much less from time to time. I got mine at a reduced cost.

Mostly I like how the WIFI actually works on this one. I never did get it going on the 119 I had before.

For some reason it seems to somehow connect and disconnect by itself. The sounds comes, camera1 connected, camera 2 connected without me touching anything while I am driving. It happens sometimes not all the time.

This is very easy to install. I got the Viofo hardwire kit so I could do parking recording too. The rear camera cable was plenty long for my 23 Honda Pilot, there was extra I had to bundle.
I like how it comes with those clear protectors, I used them for the rear window so I don't damage the defroster when removing it.
The recorded video is easy access via wifi on my iphone through the Viofo app.
I got a SanDisk 256GB card, plenty of storage to record on the highest setting.
There are so many settings you can set it up anyway you like it.
I love this camera kit so much I bought another one to replace my old A119.
Highly recommended!

Great camera with good set of features and configurations. Spent the extra money to get the hardware kit to the fuse box so the parking feature works when car is off

Picture quality is good for 2k video and built in mic is good enough for sound. There is a slot to add and external mic if you need something better

Quality of videos are pretty good, one draw back is settings were reset every time engine started. I believed it is a defected item I received, had been using Viofo for few years and didn't get disappointed. Going to return it and wait for same discount I got before order a replacement. Also wanted to point out, the front dashcam size is much bigger that I expected......

Solid feature set and very good quality. I believe this model hits the sweet spot as far as resolution goes. Although you're not getting 4K, it more than makes up for it in low light performance. The 2K rear camera produces great quality video as well. The smaller connectors on the rear video cable were a plus as far as routing around pillars and through the headliner, but be very careful as the connector ends are very delicate. I ended up damaging one end when it got stuck behind the B pillar on my truck. I'd recommend wrapping the ends with some electrical tape before subjecting it to any rough handling. In case you're in a bind and need a replacement cable quick, the Blackvue coax cable with MCX connectors will work for the Viofo rear camera (although the plugs don't seat as far into the camera as the original) and you can get it from Amazon in 2 days. Getting Viofo customer support to send me a replacement cable was a slow process that was going to take a month with shipping and a Chinese holiday.

The 5 Ghz wireless and the phone app work great once you figure it out. I had to put my Iphone into airplane mode before it would stay connected to the dash cam. Once it's connected, it's very easy to change settings and the 5 Ghz WIFI makes managing video clips quick and painless. Make sure you use a high endurance SD card as Viofo recommends (Samsung Pro Endurance, Sandisk High Endurance, or Viofo brands). Also, ensure you're buying your card from a reputable seller such as Amazon so you don't get stuck with a counterfeit SD card that will drive you nuts when troubleshooting camera issues.

I'd also recommend getting the circular polarization filter for the front camera to get rid of glare on the dash and windshield. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase.

I got this dash cam for my birthday. I was very happy with it. The images were excellent, the data transfer to my computer was smoothly every time. I started accumulating crazy incidents on the road almost immediately. I don’t know what’s in the water here in Eugene, OR, but people drive a bit weird.

The problem.
After installation, well, exactly 10 days after installation the unit failed. First, the main camera would not record, the file would form but my computer wasn’t able to see the corrupted file. The back camera kept working but those files also would be corrupted. Then the main screen went all purple, see attached picture. The voice commands, which is one of the best nicest features of this dash cam always continued to work perfectly. I reset the thing 3 times but the errors continued. I was so frustrated that I unplugged the dash cam and gave up. I don’t know what happened but when I tried to find costumer service for Viofo, I was directed to a sight where people were posting issues, but there were no solutions there. I was like a forum.

The Solution.
I forgot about the dash cam for a while. Life happens. Anyhow, one day I was messing around with Amazon and the item came to my attention. I decided to put a review complaining about my experience with the camera and the failure. Incredibly, not 24 hours after that review, the company contacted my using the Amazon system. They were very concern about my issues with their dash cam and extremely apologetic that I had to go through those situations with it. At the end, we could not solve the issues and they decided to issue me a complete refund. I had to send them the dash cam so they could do an autopsy of the thing and see what went wrong, I figure a bad chip somewhere. It happens from time to time wit electronics. Belive me, I had my fair share of bad machines in my life. But one thing I have never had is a company handle a situation like that as efficiently, and fast as Viofo did with me. I am dry happy and pleasantly surprised of their reaction to my review. If toy ever have a problem with any of their products, contact them, they will help you right away to solve your problems or refund you in full if they can’t help you. To Viofo I say, thanks you guys for all your help with my problem.

Overall:

The Viofo A229 Duo is a good dash cam. It’s not perfect, but it does most of what it needs to well and it’s easy to use. It comes with everything you need to use this except the micro SD card. Also to make full use of all the features a hardwired kit with a voltage cut off is also likely needed. It would be nice if there was a remote control to trigger taking still images and to mark videos, doing so while driving with a phone or on the camera would be difficult and dangerous. The easiest way to view recording seem to be removing the card or plugging directly into the camera. The WiFi works well, it just takes too much fiddling with the camera and cell phone to make a connection.

The good:

Video quality is good when in the daytime. During the day license plates are as readable as they are with the naked eye. Night-time I think you can read better with your eyes. This is because the image at night from head lights and reflective surfaces are over-exposed and washed out.

Still camera shots are the same quality as the video. 2560 x 1440. And taking a still shot requires use of the app or pressing a button on the camera. While driving, neither is ideal. But you really don’t need to either since it’s always recording.

I use a 128 GB card and I think I figured it will store about 5 hours of video. At the best video quality 5 minutes of video is about one GB of data for each camera.

Install is really dependent on your vehicle (how difficult is it to run wires) and how picky you are on hiding the wires. If you don’t care, this could be installed in 5 minutes or less. This was my first install of a dash cam. Took me a couple of hours total with trying to figure out where to run the wires. If I had to do it again, it would be a half hour.

I’d suggest setting up the dash cam before it is installed, as fiddling with the buttons once it’s installed is awkward with the camera attached to the windshield. You can set most things from the app (I used the android version), but I found that the video quality could not be set to 2K from the app, I had to do that on the camera. The app would only let you set it to 1080P.

The APP (android) works well, except not all the setting are available in it. Accessing and downloading video and photos is easy. You do need to press the wifi button on the camera and then connect to that wifi before connecting in the app, which is bit annoying. The wifi 2.4 and 5 GHz both work well, but the 5GHz does speed up viewing and downloading the videos. Takes about a minute to download 1 GB file. You can also plug a phone or PC into the USB port and download the video that way, but it’s not really that much faster.

The instruction manual is okay, good enough to figure out everything.

The bad (more like the not perfect):

The app is annoying to connect to the camera, I would think that when you start the app it would connect to the camera as long as the wifi on it was turned on. Also not having all the setting available was a surprise. Not a deal breaker but some things Viofo should improve.

Night time video quality is not all that great, it’s pretty poor, but it’s not that much of a surprise. It’s a small sensor, small optics and at this price point it’s what it is. Lights at night make unlight areas even darker. And the video is pretty grainy too. The parking mode at night is pretty poor too, I am not sure if you could even make out someone face if they were standing at the bumper. If there were some IR light and the camera could pickup the IR it would night time parking mode more useful. In the meantime, make sure you park where there are some lights.

Would be nice if a Micro SD card and the Acc Hardwire Kit were included. Maybe offer a kit that comes with Acc Hardwire Kit instead of the supplied power cable. Also including a few zip ties to wrap up extra wire and secure the wire in place would be nice too.

The font size in the instruction manual is pretty small, larger would be nice.
