Yes, it is not pretty
All right, I don’t usually write reviews but here I am. I (the moment I am making this review) got into an accident, the person in front of me stupidly braked violently (complete stop) on a highway, the metropolitan autoroute in Montreal. The dash cam recorded EVERYTHING the moment I left the place I was since I was selling something, me & my mother talking BUT not the accident. It recorded where me & the other person was after the accident because stopping in a highway is stupid but like I said, not the accident. It is really & really frustrating that a proof that I thought would exist in the storage, isn’t alive. Truly disappointing from such a well noted product. I am the type of person who doesn’t care to set the right sensor, I always set the highest sensibility since the resolution I am using is 1920x1080 & 120fps, the size of the video is not extreme for a 128gb SD card, but yet it didn’t record a COLLISION. Yes of course I am at fault because I wasn’t able to stop a fu… car that is 1.5tons to 0 from 60 despite the events. Viva Canada everyone! THE WORST, AN OFFICER PASSED BY AND DID NOTHING ABOUT TWO PERSON STOPPED IN A HIGHWAY WITH THEIR HAZARDS ON, YEP. Of course I can’t prove that without a video, I’m just a low key citizen after all.

I’ve used this dashcam on and off for the past 5 years and it works well. Even after long periods between operation, quality not affected. Good for Uber drivers and captures full interior cabin (front and back) for safety purposes. Recommend

On some review website, someone "claimed" to have tested this product's power consumption (I'll get to why this is important) and including the GPS module and back camera, it was supposed to consume around 3.1W of power at most.

Quality of the front and back camera seems good, as this is my first dashcam for my car, I have nothing to compare it with, I was recommended here by Youtuber reviewers (LTT).

The problem, I bought a 50Wh battery assuming it would consume 3W, set it up at 10pm at night for parking recording. Next morning at 11am, DEAD battery.

My reaction was like "WTF", power consumption should be about 90% loss, so I should have a 45Wh, which should be around 15 hours MINIMUM with a 50Wh battery. Then I had to get out my tools to measure the ACTUAL consumption. It wasn't 3W or 3.1W, nowhere close. I ensured the dashcam was setup to parking mode, and waited for atleast 10 minutes sitting inside the car, in a garage with no one else. The camera would waver around 3.9W to 4.1W, most of the time at 4.1W. Doing nothing. Since park recording ONLY records when there is movement it was still burning 4.1W. I even disabled the GPS module, didn't matter much, still consumed a little over 4W.

This required some massive innovation, or lack of. I refused to hook to car battery, so I had to get a 100W PD capable lithium ion battery at the size of 99Wh. I couldn't use LiFePo as they came in 70Wh, and costs about $400 EACH. (Life expectancy of LiFePo should be about 4+ years, Li-Ion would be 2+ years, 1500 cycles vs 500 cycles)

Even with the 99Wh battery, I killed my battery in under 20 hours. I ordered another, hooked up a Y usb connecter. With two 100Wh hooked up to 200Wh, I had about 40 hours of power before it dried up.

Why use 100W PD? Because 100W PD charges 80% of the battery in about one hour from a 100W charger for a 99Wh capacity. (batteries trickle charge after reaching 80% mark). Anything slower than an hour is no good because my driving sessions are regularly around 40 minute mark.

All this work, just because this camera consumes a lot more power than expected. (25% extra power consumption is nothing to sneeze at.)

Stopped recording and before that, there were lines on front camera and finally died without warning. Just shows Viofo and nothing else meaning your camera died. Please note that there wont be any tone or any indication it failed. Overall disappointed as it should not have died so soon. Used to get very warm.

UPDATE 1 : Raised a ticket at their website and will update here as to what happened.
UPDATE 2 : 7 days after contacting Viofo, got the replacement main body only which looked new. I was asked to ship back mine (label provided by Viofo). Communication and was good. Promptness was good too.
UPDATE 3: Ok since 7 days and I switched it to 60fps 2K and it seems to be running little bit cooler. However its winter. So.... Updating review to 4 stars as the matter was handled well. The rear camera has no issues. Will update to 5 stars if this holds well in Summer at 2K resolution. I lost confidence in 4K that it can handle the heat.

This was my 2nd Viofo A129 Pro Duo dash camera ive purchased. I was drawn to this specific product because of its price and the features that you get. The image quality is great and comes close to its competitors that are currently available on market at this time. The only downside is at night time it does struggle to read license plates especially if your headlights are shining directly on the car in front of you...
I like the app Viofo has and paired with it you can definitely unlock more of the cameras potential. Ive recommended this to all my friends and family as its rather affordable and you get peace of mind knowing that in the event you need a dash camera you have one!

Background info; I work in Tech, in my mid 30s and have setup dozens if not hundreds of tech related products in my lifetime with no issues. While the process is not always fun, it always eventually works. From what I can remember, this is the only product that has ever completely failed just on the setup stage. After less than 5min of using it and trying to setting it up, the camera got stuck on the 'Viofo' logo and.. that's it. I searched online and apparently from what I understood that just happens sometimes and there's nothing to do about it? How did this pass their quality control? I've tried using different cables, different power sources, formatting the SD card and updating the firmware. Nothing helped - which seems consistent with other posts I saw online that came across this same issue.

I got these cameras for peace of mind in case of something bad happening and I'll need to record it in real time, which means that this always needs to work - and not sure how I could ever trust them if something happens and the cameras are stuck/not working all of the sudden.

I know others have had a decent experiences here, but given that this almost immediately stopped working + If you Google the issue 'viofo stuck on Viofo logo screen' can see many other complaints about it - unfortunately I cannot recommend and would give this less than 1 star if I could. Just unfortunate because I wasted so much time waiting for this, I could have just gotten a different brand in the meantime.

Pictures quality is the best I seen. in a dash camera that says it’s 4K. I tried a lot of different dash cameras. But this camera has awesome pictures quality. Plus you don’t get the glare from the window sheild. Good price for this camera. Better then any camera double it’s price in my opinion. Buy this dash camera you won’t be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great dash cam!

I had previously purchased a Rexing V1P Pro camera, which I liked, but the GPS encoding on the video files was in a proprietary format, so I returned it and bought this.

Whereas the other camera is bulky, but lightweight, this camera is small, dense, and surprisingly heavy. One feels like a toy when compared to the other.

I chose to use the default power connector, as parking mode is not important to me. The kit comes with a lot of extra mounting tape, so if you mess up your placement, or move it, you are all set. Be careful to leave room for the power cord when mounting the GPS block. I almost mounted it too close to where the rear-view mirror mounts on the windshield, and had slight difficulty plugging it in. The wiring with this camera is thick (heavy duty), and holds it’s shape well, which makes it real easy to install. This is only the 2nd time I’ve ever installed front/rear dash cams and it literally took me less than 15 minutes. Because the wires are so thick, they hold their position well, and hiding the wires from the front dash cam into the header is real easy. The kit also includes a tool to help install the wiring, which is real nice if you haven’t done it before.

The memory card slot is on the left side, so removal is convenient. Just be sure to use two hands when ejecting the media. The camera will slide off the GPS mount if you push too hard. This is the one thing I think I would have designed differently. If the mount clipped on and slid to the right (instead of left), you could remove the memory card easier.

This camera shuts off the screen when you’re driving, which I wasn’t used to at first. After running it around for a little while, I actually prefer this to other dash cams, as it is less distracting while driving.

The iOS software is very good. I found only one bug, whereas if you put the camera resolution into 1080 x 1080 mode, the app will crash immediately when you try to connect to it. The app functions as expected under all other circumstances (so far). The 5GHz wifi is FANTASTIC. Download times for clips are blazing fast as compared to the other camera I had used. Note that 4K files are huge (1.6GB for 5min), so it’s going to be more efficient to remove the memory card and plug it into the computer. Speaking of which, VOIFO even provides a USB adapter for the memory card.

Video clip options are great with this camera, offering 1,3,5 and 10 minute clips. Personally, I like to divide the clips into 5 minute segments so this camera does exactly what I need.

The only thing that I wonder long-term, is how well the card slot will hold up from constantly removing the memory chip to retrieve the footage. For this reason, I purchased a warranty for the camera.

The 4K video quality is absolutely amazing, and the 130/140 field of view front/rear is perfect. Unlike other cameras, there is no fisheye effect due to the wide angle. The mic on the camera also exceeded my expectations.

The only annoying/missing feature on the camera is the lack of a daylight savings time setting. You must switch the timezone offset to match your timezone when daylight savings comes and goes. This is a software setting that could easily be addressed in a future firmware update. Not a dealbreaker for me.

4K video playback is choppy in dashcamviewer on macOS due to Quicktime. Too bad, as that’s the whole reason I bought this camera. I’m hoping that newer builds will read the H.265 codec. RE: H.265 codec, there is an undocumented feature where you can change the encoding from H.264 to H.265 by holding the mic button for 4 seconds. H.265 encoded videos will play smoothly in Quicktime on macOS, whereas the H.264 videos will not. Both formats play perfectly in VLC, so if you don’t care about following your footage around the map while you play it, even better! The software has options for displaying speed and GPS coordinates on the footage if you want, and you can hide the camera model from the footage if you prefer not to show it. I have not seen that feature on other cameras. Additionally, you can add a custom label to your dashcam footage which might be useful.

If you’re looking at other cameras, and you’re wondering if the cost differential for this one is worth it, I would say go for it! The worst thing for me is the poor 4K playback support in the software I wanted to use, but I’m confident the developer will solve that as more 4K cameras hit the market. Virtually everything else about this camera either meets or exceeds my expectations.

I have been using my GoPro Hero 8 as my dashcam for many years, however, it gets too hot and turn itself off many times during the summer. Then I decided to get a solid and reasonable price dashcam instead. I have reviewed several dashcams online, and finally decided to get VIOFO 4k Duo from Amazon. First, it's under my budget of $300 (honestly I don't think $800 BV is worth it) Secondly, it's 4K and the quality is one of the best after few reviews over the years. Third the App is easy to use and there are lots of tutorial video online about this one, it's easy to learn and easy to operate. However, I quoted a price for dashcam installation in my Ford Ranger, the bodyshop I used to visit, asks for $300 for the whole process. After viewing several DIY videos on YouTube, I decided to do it myself. The good thing about Ford Ranger, it has a USB slot right behind the rear mirror, I could connect the dashcam using a short power cable, which is the same type of GoPro Hero 4. It only took about one-hour and I saved $300 easily! I tested it several times, the video quality is really good, especially under 4K, I could save the video directly from my iPhone and edit the video on the phone. I would say it's a really good deal if you are thinking about the protect your valuable car and win the claim after the accident. I would recommend it to others.

Please note, don't hide your cable near the airbags as I shown in one of the pictures. I accident did it first and one mechanic told me that it would create more damage to the driver when the airbag pops out. So always hide the cable through the bottom section of the door frame.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best and nearly perfect

This A129 is my third of the 129 series and my 6th of the line. The first was a B40 followed by an A118 then A118c. The A129 was the first of the capacitor models that worked well but was plagued by times when it would randomly not record. This new A129 Pro is a very good camera. The resolution is fantastic and has no problems catching street names and license tags even in moderately low light. The rear camera is still the old 1080p at 30fps but it can easily catch the hand gesture or random deep nose foray of the person behind.

The number one problem is still the occasional recording issue. This A129Pro will sometimes randomly not record and require the media card to be formatted. Once it is formatted it will record without further issue for a wee or three.

There was an issue with a card I used in my standard A129 that refused to record in the A129 Pro for more than 15 seconds. When the recording stopped there was no flashing LED or audible sound. Formatting in the camera did not fix it but the card worked fine in the standard A129 afterwards.

In my opinion a dash cameras most important feature is that is is always recording. The one time I need it after being pushed from behind in the fast lane by a trailered work truck then driven off the highway and had a gun pulled on me, the camera was not working. Thankfully to, a stopped freeway of onlookers and several good Samaritans, I got away unhurt but could not file a hit-and-run or road-rage complaint.

Close Viofo but not quite there. Keep trying, you'll get it soon.

EDIT: I have changed from a 256GB video card to a 128GB card and the camera has not missed a recording since. as the higher data rates become more common it will start to be important to be functional with the larger capacity cards.

I am upgrading my rating to 5 stars. This is an amazing camera when hardwired and using a memory card.

Good value for money product. The picture quality is good. I have found it to be reliable. That is, whenever I have need to review some footage, it was there. One critique is that the up-down angle of the camera can change easily if you bump it. If you bump it with a sunshade for instance. That problem was easily fixed however. I used some putty to hold the movable part of the camera in place. (I used Kintsuglue.)
