🚩 The free app that the QR code leads to is called "PicScanner." It works well and allows for a user to select:
♦ Color positive
♦ Color negative - used on slides to produce a correct colour image
♦ Black and white negative
I find the app easy to use, but I like taking a close-up picture of anything, a slight bit of shaking, and the image is fuzzy. To use this with any amount of success, the phone needs to be mounted on a tripod or other mechanical clamp-like device so that when taking a picture, camera motion doesn't exist like it does when holding a phone.
The tablet is very simple to use. There is nothing technical about it at all. It comes with a short USB to USB-C cable to power it up. There is one button that turns it on by pressing and holding. Once powered on, press to move to the next light level, once more to the third level, and repeatedly pressing it just cycles through the lighting levels. Press and hold again, or just unplug the USB cable to power it off.
► What's really nice is that as large as the tablet is, the light is constant. I cannot detect any individual LEDs, its just one nice panel even even lighting.
► Besides scanning negatives, I find it very handy when sketching and wanting to copy an image printed on paper so that the light can shine through enough for me to make out the lines.
► After running the tablet for about half an hour, I found that it got slightly warm but not to the point where it was anything to worry about.
► On it's bottom are four wide diameter pads that keep it from sliding around when used on a desktop.
► Because the highest light level setting is very bright, I never had to press down on the papers (sheet I was drawing on laid over top of the image I wanted to copy) with any real pressure. This is nice since it eliminates the probability pf pressing too hard and breaking the panel.
On the upside, if you want to use this to get electronic versions of old negatives, I found that I could use the app for 110, 35mm, and 3x4 negatives from a few decades ago.
Even at the regular price of $49.99 (as I write this review, there is a deal on - $35.99) it's a good deal for anyone who needs a panel like this for their art work or, if you have the means to hold the phone steady so the app can create electronic images for your old film negatives.
→ As a side note, the seller also has negative scanners made to hold a negative and then have an internal camera take images. They also have a small LCD display which shows the image before pressing the SCAN button. I've used other machines like this, and they do a great job copying old negatives and slides.
The light panel comes with an app that you can use for "scanning" older film negatives, and while it doesn't seem to have any reviews at the moment, when I tested it out it worked just fine. Keep in mind, as another review pointed out, that if you're using your phone to take pictures of your film (or anything else, for that matter) you're going to want a steady hand or a way to anchor your camera to reduce or (preferably) eliminate blur.
You don't *have* to use the panel for just photos, though. I imagine you can use it like a standard light box. All you need to do is plug it in to a power source via USB (like a mobile power bank) and turn it on.
That's all it really does anyway. On (three brightness settings) and Off.
It's a surprisingly simple product at the end of the day, so just make sure the temperature options, the size, and the fact that it doesn't have any kind of built in battery in mind.
5/5 because it's exactly what it says on the tin.
Not recommending & hopefully I can send it back for a refund
Hence, my attention was grabbed by the mention of the PicScanner app, and its IOS equivalent, that would at least permit me to use my Android phone (or other family members’ iPhones) to retrieve those old negative images for further study.
At this point, it is incumbent upon me to isolate my comments to the device itself. I am in fact most impressed. It is lightweight and super bright in use. Plugs easily into the USB slot on my PC using the provided cable, although I did employ a longer one from my own kit. There was a protective film on the screen, but once removed, the tablet is well provided for with a soft flexible foam bag, and a more rigid foam top and bottom cover set that fits nicely in the box it arrived in, for safe storage.
I need to do more research on alternate software, since the one that was mentioned in the manual is not easy to navigate, lacking any sort of dedicated instructions. I still want to experiment with the iPhone app however, once my granddaughter comes home for school break.
In short, I highly recommend this light-box for its quality of build and functionality. The half dozen slides that I was able to replicate on my phone were perfectly lit and recorded, once I wrestled with the software. I am confident that I will get a lot of use out of it for the relatively small investment.
UPDATE (2 DAYS LATER) I took this with me when I visited my friend on Monday rather than wait for GD to come home. Like me he was most impressed with the Light tablet, but when he tried to use the recommended software on his iPhone, it wouldn’t load the camera – total waste of time. He says he will however buy the device and we both plan to use it in conjunction with our digital cameras. There are apparently tips on-line as to how to do negative reversals using the curves feature in normal editing tools.
