Ordered my model 24 on a saturday and received it on Monday. WOW, and the unit was perfect condition. I uploaded to the current 1.61 firmware with no issue after loading and formatting the SD card NOT included. Had No issue loading the driver and software. My unit was recognized immediately by reaper and my pc. Changed the PC master channel to channel 21/22 as the Tascam automatically selects channel 1 on the mixer by default. Still uses channel 1 for playback of computer sounds when not using the daw. Keep in mind, you have to change your thinking process when moving to this unit, the mixer is no longer on your computer screen. If you arent getting sound, you have to click the main, or turn up the control room pot etc. If Spl or Fpl is pressed, you wont hear anything from the control room. I use Windows 7/64, its rock solid and NO issues at all. I use Sub out left and right to run headphone monitors to my drum room and use the single headphone out for my phones on the control room. Get it, and DONT look back. :-)

Did a lot of research before purchasing. The marketing is a bit misleading hence 4 stars out of 5. Not a true 16 track unit. 8 mono tracks, plus doubled up stereo tracks (9/10, 11/12, 13/14 - which also incorporates recording/playback of aux & blue tooth connected devices and the master volume (master bus) serves as tracks 15/16 for playback.) In hindsight I wish I'd purchased the 24 track version of this so as to have 12 separate mono tracks. Having said all this, it makes excellent sounding recordings almost on a professional, commercial grade level. If you have any experience with previous tascam portastudios from the 90s onward, you'll be up and running in no time. Numerous helpful videos on YouTube. Overall, this is a far superior unit to the DP-24.

Works great! Live recording and on the computer, was easy to setup and use, I like how easy is to export the tracks to the PC.

This mixer is not a full porta studio but if you know what are you doing you can get anything done in the mixer.

I bought this in september 2023. I could not managed to set it up as an interface with my Windows 10 32G ram 1T ssd i7 PC after following the manual and youtube tutorial while my other interfaces all work well. Also i don't even get no signal on my inputs until i power it off and on again, then i get a boom in the speakers and the input signals open up with the leds as you can see in the video. I had good experience with Tascam tape multitrackers in the past, but that is sure over now and it will never happen again. I wanted to upgrade from my Zoom multitrack recorder, but this is an expensive downgrade. Don't let the vintage style fool you into thinking it's an easier basic device to operate. It's the most confusing frustrating device i have ever owned. Simple tasks on other units are fairly easy, but those simple tasks on the model 12 can only be acheived by long complicated workarounds. Can't assign a track to an input, you need to scroll the menu to move the track to another or unplug and replug in another input, why Tascam?, why?
small 80s Casio calculator screen. Falsly advertized as a 12 track while it's really 6 tracks + 2 stereo tracks that they count as 10 and the other 2 are the master bus which you can only be used to export a stereo mix. Not a mastered mix, just a stereo mix because unlike the Zoom models and DP24&32 model, this model requires a PC to finish and master your project.
I should've bought the DP24sd or the Zoom L20 or Zoom R20 instead. Only big regrets purchasing this tascam model 12 and i sure can't recommend this. Took me awhile before i realised it was not me but the unit that is poorly designed and that i need to power on and off to unfreeze it. I wish i could exchange this for a different multitrack unit, but i think it's too late, i purchased it in september 2023.

DAWs take too much time. I can run drums guitars, bass and vocal into this and get a very good recording, tweak all the levels on board and even add minimal effect just like and old analog mixer. But if I want, I can take the raw recordings and edit them in a DAW, so this gives the best of both worlds. I use this as my PA mixer as well run out to a power amp. I really like this thing, it's an all in one solution for the home studio. It has 16 xlr inputs, I could always use more, but it's definitely enough to record an entire band, depending how crazy you get with the drum mics. Only issue is the instructions are pretty weak, but there are plenty of good videos on YouTube to explain how to use all the functions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Versatile MTR and Mixer, does Bluetooth, USB etc., will work with DAWs.

Needs reading the manual, a few times.

If you want to make multi-track recordings then this will do it. If you want an interface for a DAW, it does that too, and if you prefer Bluetooth, it does that also.

An excellent machine, the 12 channel is the little brother of the 16, and 24 channel.

Common sense applied to manual directions is all that is necessary to operate what appears to be quite complex at first. There are some complaints about USB hookup. Well they tell us not to use a long cable! In fact in the box there is a short one, 1 meter long, in fact. If that is not a hint, I do not know what is. Whichever, in my case hooking up directly to the Motherboard USB 2.0 sockets worked as the manual describes. However I will add, I tried to connect to a USB 3.0 upgrade card. That did not work.

So yes! read the manual.

The clean sound, silence if you prefer, of the powered device over headphone, or monitor, deserves the most marks. Well done Tascam. The Midi In and Out, a great asset! The Sub Out, alternative route to hookup monitors with 1/4 inch TRS cables, very handy, and useful for a host of other configurations.

Love the dual inputs 1 - 10, either XLR, or 1/4 inch TRS.

All in all, it leaves my old device, Fostex - X26 in the dust! Super value added with the PC hookup options, even if, at this time, I have no need of it.

Only thing I would change is the Phantom Power option, currently global on this model, it might work better if managed by S/W to each channel. IOW turn it off for regular hookups.

Before you power a new unit make sure the Phantom Power, top rhs of the board, is off! Else you may fry an expensive Mic which does not need the 48 Volts.

Tips, gotten from the Tascam Forum, 1. on each channel the Sub Button arms the Headphones bus, IOW you can barely hear stuff without doing that, and do turn the volume, gain, down before tweaking their controls, middle rhs. 2 you do not need to press the Play button as well as the Record button when making a track. Yes in the old days of Tape it was necessary to, but on the Digital unit, it is not!

To make a new track, create a song - RTM for more. Hookup your input - Mic or whatever. Use the Meter to set the level/s. Punch both record buttons, first the track one, then the main. When done punch the stop button. To hear what you did, move the Mode from Live to MTR, and press Play. To dub another track alongside, simply arm the next channel with an input, Mode live, set its levels. Then press it's record button, and when ready press the main record button. It is NOT necessary to press the record on the previous channel! Because if you do with no input it will erase track 1. Just leave it on play, make sure the volume slider is up so you can hear the Mode MTR replay as you dub the new track alongside.

Effects work ONLY if you disarm all the Solo buttons, and the wee red light LHS of the screen is off. If it is on the Effects do not work. Need increasing the Aux 2 orange button on your chosen channel. Needs pressing the Select button in the control panel - mid rhs . This brings up the FX menu on the main screen. In it be sure to turn on the effect by rotating the Jog wheel to on - Manual Pages 33 / 34. Now press the Main buttons. I found it was necessary to do that both on my channels and on the FX slider. Too, that simply controls how much effect is sent to your Main bus, i.e. the one we chose to carry it. IOW the volume of the effect is still controlled by the Main slider, so maxing up the FX one does not increase the output.

A bit sloppy but will save some searching.

My headphone first click-less encounter with the Model 12 is now remedied with a full clicking replacement. Thanks Amazon!

I like the hands on recording and analouge mixing abilities, slightly fiddly menu system but get used to it quite quickly, not too steep a learning curve. I Like the daw interface capabilty, can read or write to or from daw channels. I do find the fx quite limited,as a single global fx on all channels. Unlike other korg recorder i use with fx per channel. Possibly the 12 is different being digital. Went for the 16 to get more inputs. Not used in live situstion yet but the aux and sub channels are prob going to be useful.
