I had never taken apart a 3-way light switch before, and it wasn’t immediately clear what was going on in the box. Once I figured it out everything works perfectly, and I am using each one in two separate rooms rather than installing both of them for the same light. All functionality works perfectly, both manually and with the Kasa app, for both lights when the switches are installed on seperate circuits. In my photo, one black cable was hot (the line) and that’s connected to the black screw labelled line/load. The other black and the red are the travellers. On my other circuit the travellers were red and white. Some tips...1) Install both to control the same lighy only if having matching switches is important. They look very similar to the switches I already had, so this wasn’t important for me at all. You absolutely only need to use one smart switch per circuit.2) Power only goes to one light switch. I installed them on the switch that had a power coming to it.3) You can find which one has power (is hot) by disconnecting all cables from both switches, and use a multimeter to test each cable. Only one, on one side, will be hot. It’s best to turn the breaker off before detaching the switches, and then turn it back on to find the hot one. It should be one of the black ones.4) To be sure which are the two travelers, again with the breaker off, you can use a wire or something to connect all of the cables together in the box with the hot cable, then go over to the other side and again use the multimetre and both travellers will be hot.5) The cable on the other side that is not hot at this point will be the one that goes off to the load, which in this case are the lights. It will probably also be black.6) Back in the box with the hot cable coming from the breaker, connect the hot wire to the black screw of the smart switch, and the two travellers to the two travellers screws.7) This could’ve been tip one, but you need a neutral to connect to or it won’t work. This is required so there is a circuit always delivering some power to control the electronics in the smart switch. It will work if you connect neutral to ground, but this is not recommended at all. Connecting the ground to the ground is optional, but recommended.8) Reconnect all cables to the original dumb switch on the other side. The load should connect to its black screw. If it has a neutral, and you want to use both smart switches on the same circuit, then go right ahead.9) Take a couple of clear pictures of both switches BEFORE disconnecting any cables so you can be sure to put it back as it was. You could’ve also added labels (included in the box) as you confirmed what each cable was.10) When setting it up in the app, after you have configured the smart switch following the instructions, just click next/done a couple times to tell it you did the other one, on the other side, when you actually didn’t.11) Install the second switch on another 3way circuit of your choice12) To work with Google Home/Alexa, you need to turn on remote control in the device settings using the Kasa app. This is because Google talks to your TP link account in the cloud to control the lights.Final note: It really is too bad they don’t sell these in packages with only one for people who might want to only install one on a single circuit . Their included information could also clarify that each switch could be used on separate circuits. I hope these tips help someone.

The Kasa line of switches are an excellent choice for upgrading your home to a smart home. They install easily like any switch should. The quality is robust and they look sharp once installed. Each switch comes with everything you need including basic install instructions, connectors, and finish plate. The switches have a night light feature built in to them making them easy to locate and turn on in low light situations.

Their app is easy to use and has numerous features to automatically control your home. The Kasa line integrates nicely with Tapo products and you can easily control all your cameras and switches from the Tapo app as well.

they are awesome, easy to install and setup. however i ordered the wrong ones (3way switch) instead of what i needed(single pole). Incase anyone is thinking of buying, 3 way switch only works for 1 light source and not 2 different light sources, for that you want two single pole TP-Link HS220's.

Easy to connect anything (plugs/switches/etc) once u have the app setup. Motion switches r great and can set timing on them real easy. Only issue which is minor is u can't arrange the order of your switches... to do it u have to add a numeri al digit to get the room switches to be in the order u want them to appear. (Ie: Living Room Light, Upstairs Bedroom, Bathroom, Kitchen, etc... need to put 1. 2. 3. 4.... in front of the rooms to get them to go in the order u wish to see them on the app. Not a biggee but would be better if u could just arrange them on the app with out numerical input.

Easy wiring, easy wi-fi connection, and the product looks great after install. App is really easy to use too.

I have 20+ units installed around my house, and they all work great. Motion sensor units work great, and the dimmer switches have memory, so the brightness level is always perfect.

Only downside is the height of the switch. They don't fit inside older (80's) boxes very well.

*** Just don't buy used switches ***
Often they come damaged, or the incorrect switch is in the wrong box. Not worth the hassle of a few dollars.

They work well, were relatively easy to install as long as you found the the line side of the 3 way switches. Unlike what some people have said, you cannot separate these switches in order to use in 2 different 3 way switch circuits. This is because there is a very clear master and slave relationship. The master has a line for the power, and the slave switch does not. Therefore it will not work without the master. Perhaps earlier versions of Kasa's 3 way switches were not built this way, but this version is.

That being said, when purchase on sale, they were still more economical than other solutions that I found.

I have not personally integrated with Alexa as I don't use it, but I know that it can be done. I have used the App however and it is very easy to setup and I am very happy with the built in feature set. I especially love the away mode that many apps don't have. This allows for the randomization of on and offs during a specified time frame as opposed to always coming on at x time and off at y time when you are away, therefore advertising that you are not in the house.

I am very happy with these switches and have recommended them to others. I have not installed close to 20 in my own house and have no complaints.

The switches work great connect to the home network very easily and stay connected. The non dimmer version can be used separately with another standard 3 way switch so a pair will cover 2 separate locations but the dimmer version must be used in pairs. I also use the plug receptacle and they work fantastic as well. The two receptacles are controlled separately. I have replaced all other brands of wifi plugs switches and receptacles with the kassa/ tp link ones and it makes home control much easier.

I’ve had the single light switch version of this for years and really happy. I was waiting for the 3-way version to come out and bought a few for the house when they did. While it works as expected, there are a few things to point out.

First, open your receptacle and make sure you have a neutral (usually white) wire and test it! I had a white wire and thought no problem, but turns out my white wire was actually being used as a hot wire. Luckily, the other end of the 3-way had a neutral that I could use. Remember you don’t need to install both switches for this to work, you can install just one side. This allows you to install one switch on another 3-way in the house.

The other thing is that it gets a bit tricky when installing this next to another switch. The backing of the switch is a bit bulkier that regular light switches and I ran into a headache trying to get my regular wall plate sit flush with this light switch. Even after playing around with the wall plate for a while, I couldn’t get it to sit flush with the wall. If installing this on a single switch, no problem. The wall plate that’s included with the package fits beautifully over the switch and very secure.

Connecting the switch using the Kasa app was painless and so quick. I love the white glow it gives when the light is off, making it easier to locate the switch at night. This is such a great way to automate your lights and easy enough for most people to do by themselves at home. You never know what you’re going to get when you open your electrical box, so even though it’s pretty straight forward on how to connect the wires, make sure you test your wires and know how everything works before you install this. I’m pretty confident with electrical and I discovered I have what’s called a “switch loop” which uses the white wire as a hot wire. It made installation way more complicated but not impossible. Really happy with the final look and function.

These 3 way switches are great once you get them wired up. I didn't have experience installing 3 way switches, though I have installed many of the single switch TP Link switches. The first 3 way switch took a while but most of the others went much quicker.

These switches are pretty meaty, particularly the main switch. I had to modify the inside of one of my electric boxes in my 1950s home to squeeze switch in, and for a garage application with metal box cover, had to trim away at the mounting tabs to fit.

Biggest issue I had was that I installed the 4th or 5th three way switch and got flashing red circle upon startup. There was no way the wiring was wrong, it was super obvious in both electric boxes what went where. So I put in a new TP Link 3 way switch and still got same error. Disappointed, I tried swapping the traveler wires on one of the switches and miraculously, problem solved. The orientation of the two traveler wires is not supposed to matter, don't know what happened there but at least it works now. If you're sure the wires are correctly oriented but you have red circle, maybe test switching travelers on one of the switches.

Once they are set up, they work wonderfully. Love the white LED ring on the front so you can find the switch in the dark. The LED ring is a slightly different color/brightness than TP Link's single switches, my wife wishes they were the same. Tons of options for scheduling and so forth. So far, couple weeks, very reliable - I've always had a good experience with TP Link's switches.

Part of my 5-star review is that I've wanted a matching 3 way dimmer switch relative to TP Link's very good single dimmer switches, so really happy to finally have a solution for all my applications. At the sale cost of ~$36 per 3 way switch kit and reasonable simplicity to install myself, it is a fantastic value for us to have remote control of everything.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great for both three way dimmer and four way configurations
Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2021
Size: Smart 3-Way Light SwitchVerified Purchase

This smart switch comes with two sets of switches. Each set includes two wire nuts, two mounting screws, snap-on face plate, wire labeling stickers, and the switch itself.

Install is relatively straightforward. I was able to install these in a 3 way dimmer switch configuration and a 3 way configuration. For both, I made sure to install the smart switch at the switch with the hot wire from the main home circuit, rather than any hot wires coming from other switches in the setup. If you install in any of the switches after this first switch then I believe it won't work. Only one switch is needed - the other switches can stay dumb. This also works for a single pole switch (just wire one of the travellers).

For the 3 way dimmer, the other switch is the dumb dimmer switch. It works fine after the install. For the 4 way switch, the intermediate switch is the four way and the last switch is another 3 way switch. I also didn't touch these and they worked fine. To find which switch is the first switch, I voltage tested the common wire on the switch (usually has a black screw, bottom right side of the switch when facing it) while operating the switches. The common wire for the first switch will never go to zero (when measuring between it and ground or using a line tester). In my house, this first switch was also usually in the largest gang outlets or near areas with lots of wiring.

If your old switch has the wires inserted into a hole in the switch rather than screwed on the side, you have to find a small paperclip and stick it in the even smaller hole next to it. Then you can pull the wire out.

The neutral and ground wires in the smart switch are permanently fixed to the smart switch. They can be wired into any existing bundles of neutral (white) and ground (exposed copper) wires in the outlet box. My outlet box had these already bundled together and secured using a wire nut. I just unscrewed the wire nut and added the cables from the switch.

The remaining line/hot wire (black) and traveller wire connections are screwed onto the smart switch. There are no wires coming off the smart switch itself for these. I do not believe it matters which traveller wire goes to which terminal. Typically the traveller wires will be bundled into one sheathed wire in the outlet box, while the line/hot wire will be separate. My traveller wires were colored red and black. The traveller wires are screwed onto the top of the switch, and the line wire to the right side.

I found the smart switches to be a lot larger than the dumb switches, but they do just barely fit into the outlet box. I had to chip away some drywall compound from my outlet boxes to get them to fit. If your outlet box is metal, you might want to insulate the traveller wire terminals, as I think they could contact the metal box.

Setup is very easy with the app. No QR codes to scan. Just go near the switch and follow the instructions in the app. It does not use Bluetooth either. It seems to search for a Wifi broadcast from the switch. For some of my switches I had trouble connecting the first time, but a retry, or reset of the switch (using a small button on the front of the switch) would allow it to work. Alexa integration is automatic once you link the Kasa phone app.

The switch itself is not a toggle like a normal switch, but simply a clicky button. When off, a dim white ring lights up the switch. Below the switch are very small reset and restart buttons. Although I only have one switch per three way or four way setup, the app can still tell if my light is on or off.

Finally, these have no delay. I have some Kasa smart plugs plugged into switched outlets. With these smart plugs, there is a slight delay when turning on the switch and waiting for the lights to come on. However, with the smart switches, there is no delay. I assume this is because the smart plugs actually lose power while the switch doesn't.

I am very happy with these switches. The setup and use is very easy. Install was very straightforward, even though I had not done any switch installs before. These are one of the cheapest smart switches on the market, but they perform excellently.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice dimmers overall ✅

I’ve been updating a lot of older lights to new “wire type” led bulbs and many of the old dimmers were not compatible 🥺 I have tried several other brands but like these Kasa Smart units the best. They are well made ✅ I like the screw terminals for either line-load or travelers on these. You can put a serious “tight” on the screws and they grip well. No breaking / no stripping. I am also comforted by the fact that these carry the ETL cert and some info about UL “conforming” and a bunch of other “ratings” or “standards” as well.

The overall feel is nice. It’s hard to describe but the plastic just feels like “quality” under your finger. The subtle “click” on the main on/off button contractor is also very “quality feeling” unlike some of the others that I tried that just feel “cheap”. I have installed about a dozen of these now and the Wi-Fi set-up worked easily on all but one. I could not get it to connect to my router. I almost gave up after half a dozen tries but then tried both the “restart” and “reset” and it connected easily. Smooth dimming operation, no flicker, no whining.

Overall, I like the app but it doesn’t seem to connect to some of the other Wi-Fi switches and outlets I already had. It would be nice to simplify to just one app. Maybe it’s possible, but it’s not obvious to me yet unless I move away from the Kasa app. But I kinda like the Kasa app.

The single location and 3-way kits work fine but I don’t see any option for 4-way lighting⚡️There are videos clearly showing that a mechanical 4-way “center” switch can be used but I don’t want to go that route. It’s not clear to me why they can’t make a companion 4-way for this system. I have older electronic dimmers that work fine in a 4-way system; it was possible 20 years ago but not today ❓
