Pretty Impressive OTA Converter Stick
4 out of 5 stars
Pretty Impressive OTA Converter Stick
Despite being about the size of a Firestick, this compact digital converter has a bunch of nice features. It comes with:a remote, 2 AA batteries, a user manual, an HDMI cable and a set of red, white & yellow RCA cables for connecting it to your TV, a USB and IR cable, and a 1 year warranty. What it does NOT come with:the minimum that you will need to make it work is 1) an OTA antenna, and 2) since no power adapter is provided, a USB power source (5V – 1.5A). I connected it to the USB port of my TV and it works fine.If you connect an external hard drive or USB flash drive (sold separately), you can also optionally record programs. But you can watch live TV fine without external storage (I did not test recording).First off, you have to understand that this is a converter (and optional PVR) for OTA (Over The Air) ATSC TV signals. The input must come from an antenna, and not a cable provider. You will need either an inside or outside OTA antenna (sold separately), and be in an area that receives OTA signals. And by antenna, I do not mean a satellite dish. It could be a simple flat indoor antenna for the wall/window, or one of those big outside home antenna towers. I have both, but for the purpose of this review I connected the stick to my outdoor tower. With my existing setup, and on a good day, I can get 36 channels at my residence in Canada, and over 100 at my residence in Florida. Testing this converter at my Canadian residence, I was able to pickup the same number of channels as my other OTA box.A lot of factors determine how many channels YOU will get, and you might not be as lucky as me.Some of the main features are:Supports Closed Captioning (as long as the channel is broadcasting them).Supports an on-screen EPG (Electronic Programming Guide).A return button to toggle back and forth between 2 channels. It has a good quality tuner that I’ve compared to other OTA boxes. The stick also supports playing multi media files (e.g. music, pictures & videos) via the USB port that I did not try out.One feature that I REALLY like about this stick is that the signal strength is shown for each channel (0-100%). This is extremely helpful during antenna installation when positioning it to find the best “sweet spot” to get the strongest signal.I’m not sure if this converter can handle the new Nextgen ATSC 3.0 format that’s being rolled out in the USA. If it does, that would be a plus. If it doesn’t, there “may” be some USA channels that the scan would find, but that you wouldn’t be able to watch.Cons:I’m disappointed that the EPG is by one channel at a time. I.e. instead of showing a traditional guide of what’s on all the channels, it will only show the current and upcoming programming for ONE channel at a time (see pic). So if you’re browsing to find something to watch, you have to go through each of the channels one by one.The Amazon listing and the box it comes in, are VERY misleading. Amongst the channels it shows to possibly bring in are CNN and ESPN. These are uniquely cable channels and they are not broadcast over the air, no matter where you live or what your reception is.Summary:This is a very nice OTA converter/PVR stick. I’m really surprised and impressed with the functionality in such a small size device. There are other models out there with additional functionality but they come at a higher price. With increasing cable TV costs, more and more people are cutting the cord. If you are able to receive OTA signals where you are, then this converter stick is a very good choice to maintain similar functionality at a reasonable price (and with no additional monthly cost).

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
This is a decent ATSC receiver/TV tuner that's reasonably well-made and for the most part works as expected without issues. It has both HDMI and RCA output, which is great, and it's also a media player capable of playing most common/basic multimedia files on an external USB storage/flash drive etc. It comes with the usual remote/IR and features standard (albeit limited, i.e. 7 day) EPG function. It also allows you to record shows onto an external USB storage (preferably HDs rather than Flash drives) although the recording and viewing functions are mutually excluded from each other, which is a bit of a bummer.

First thing first, this box is for OTA (Over-The-Air, i.e. free channels via traditional antennae) and it does NOT replace existing cable TV box and can't be used with STBs. This needs to be connected to an old fashion antenna in order to work; satellite dish or the like will NOT work since they are encrypted signals.

It has the typical plastic shell although it doesn't necessarily feel cheap (well, it doesn't feel like a million bucks either). You must use its tuner in order to record TV shows (it's not as if someone will record something played via the USB drive back onto the USB drive itself but I'm pointing out that it's not possible with this) and if you don't need the recording function then you don't really need this device UNLESS your existing TV does NOT have a built-in tuner (some budget TVs nowadays) and you wanna receive OTA channels. In essence, this is just really a tuner with recording features (plus a multimedia browser/player which most people probably don't care for). Again, this device still needs to be connected to an antenna or else it won't receive any channels.

The tuner is quite sensitive in comparison to many other standalone tuners out there. It's got an EPG, OSD, close caption, and a few other options you'd commonly see on traditional TVs capable of OTA or even ATSC receiver such as this; nothing fancy here. In addition, it also has a simple multimedia browser and player. Finally, it's capable of recording TV shows onto an external USB device (max 4TB). For those who are curious, the bitrate is approx. 2100 kb/s (video/audio combined) for the recorded video. The video quality is actually pretty decent provided that your antenna can receive [high enough] quality signals.

Last but not least, this does NOT come with an AC/DC adapter/power supply so you will need to your existing USB charger to power it. The USB-A port on your TV may or may NOT work depending upon how much power it can provide. Video quality could degrade if insufficient power is being provided. It claims to require 7.5W (5V/1.5A) so that's a good starting point for a USB charger (i.e. min 5V/2A) if you don't already have one for this.

≡ Value
All things considered, this is a fairly decent ATSC receiver/TV tuner (for OTA) that's reasonably well-made and for the most part works as expected without issues. It goes without saying that the number of channels you can reliably watch greatly depends on your location (and location, location) and the quality of your antenna. This will NOT work with cable box or satellite dish etc because they are encrypted signals. It also acts as a basic and simple media player (via external USB drives etc) as well as having a PVR/recording function although it's rather limited. It's reasonably priced at $48 for what it provides and its overall build quality, features (basic), versatility, and performance. Your mileage might vary.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
I’ve been looking for a media player for the TV in my bedroom, so this little converter from Timbootech really caught my eye. Not only is it a functional media player that’s handled every format/codec I’ve tested (AVI, MP4, Xvid), but it’s also a digital TV converter and PVR to boot.

It’s relatively easy to set up, and all necessary cables are included. It even has an RCA/composite cable so you can use it with older TVs (or with a newer TV that doesn't have a free HDMI port). The remote works very well, and has a number of useful shortcut buttons (EPG, PVR, USB, etc). It can even be programmed to replace your old TV remote.

The manual is nicely detailed, and channel setup/menu navigation are a breeze. Every function I tested works as it should, but I must say that I didn’t test the PVR or shutdown timer. Picture quality is fine, and a number of customization options can be accessed via the menus. The media player is great, and I especially like that the RF sensor for the remote has a LED screen displaying the channel, status, and/or playback mode.

It draws its power from the TV’s USB/firmware port, which might pose a problem for older TVs that don’t have one. It also means the device will turn on and off with your TV, which has pros and cons. I like that I can just set the sleep timer on my TV to shut everything down, but that can also cause the date/time to reset.

The USB can be a little finicky when reading some drives, but the biggest problem this converter has is the number of wires sticking out all over the place. Those cables aren’t just unsightly; they actually throw off the balance and make it hard to attach properly to your TV. I plan to just let mine sit on the table beside my TV for the moment. It also gets fairly warm during use, so that's something I intend to keep an eye on.

Of course, it must also be said that the number of channels you can access depends entirely on which OTA stations are available near you. If you live in a major city you’ll probably have a number to choose from, but people in rural areas may have few or none. It would be a good idea to check an online OTA coverage map for your area before ordering.

Pros:
-Lots of functionality (EPG, PVR, scheduling, etc.)
-Small and lightweight
-Easy channel setup and menu navigation
-Responsive remote with convenient shortcut buttons (batteries included)
-Detailed manual
-Compatible with HDMI or RCA televisions (all cables included)
-Powered by TV’s USB/firmware port; will turn on and off with TV
-RF receiver for remote has LED screen that shows channel, status, and mode
-Media player works with every format/codec I’ve tried (AVI, Xvid, MP4)

Cons:
-Gets warm during use; not quite hot, but I plan to keep an eye on it
-Lots of cables going in and out in different directions, makes it unbalanced and hard to attach
-Clock is difficult to set and randomly resets itself to 10:00 PM on June 10, 2023
-USB is a bit finicky when reading some drives
-Digital receiver works well enough, but isn’t particularly powerful
-Channel availability depends on which OTA stations are near you; best to check an online OTA map for your area before buying

At $49.99, I think this is priced very well. A simple USB media player often costs as much or more, and this also offers a digital receiver and PVR to boot. It has a few minor issues, but I’m very impressed so far and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

Used old rabbit ears and about 15' of rg6 coax. Needed to get the antenna to the other side of the house. Before - right at the tv was getting 45-53 channels - and some were unusable. After the move, got 70 channels -all the main stations are strong.

you can mount the unit to the back of the tv
