#1 BESTSELLER • NOW A PARAMOUNT+ LIMITED SERIES • Stephen King’s apocalyptic vision of a world blasted by plague and tangled in an elemental struggle between good and evil remains as riveting—and eerily plausible—as when it was first published.

One of The Atlantic’s Great American Novels of the Past 100 Years! This edition includes all of the new and restored material first published in The Stand: The Complete and Uncut Edition.

A patient escapes from a biological testing facility, unknowingly carrying a deadly weapon: a mutated strain of super-flu that will wipe out 99 percent of the world’s population within a few weeks. Those who remain are scared, bewildered, and in need of a leader. Two emerge—Mother Abagail, the benevolent 108-year-old woman who urges them to build a peaceful community in Boulder, Colorado; and Randall Flagg, the nefarious “Dark Man,” who delights in chaos and violence. As the dark man and the peaceful woman gather power, the survivors will have to choose between them—and ultimately decide the fate of all humanity.

Stephen King doesn't need an introduction. This is one of his best novels and I'm glad to have been able to find it on Amazon.

If the review was just about the book and the words written within; it would be five stars all day. This is a review of the uncut hardcover of Stephen King's The Stand. It is a fairly expensive hardcover, as I'm sure you've noticed but it's paper quality is that of a paperback and not reflective of the money you're spending on this behemoth of a book. The pages are fairly thin and slightly transparent because of the pagecount at 1153. At the price point the paper should be thicker and better quality. It feels rather cheaply made and I was, to be quite frank, very disappointed in the quality offered here for a sixty dollar (CAD) on sale HC. I'm not sure if all the bindings are garbage but mine seems weak so I ordered a replacement copy and hopefully that one is better. The only saving grace on this one is Amazon's return or replacement policy.. though they could certainly learn how to ship expensive books more securely. (Dinged corners) It must cost them a fortune for all the damaged products they have returned due to poor packaging standards.
I'm going to see what my replacement looks like and if it's the same cheap looking binding I may just get a refund and see if I can find a used original HC in good shape.

Great book!!! But buyer beware of the poor product quality and poor packaging!

Hope this helps!!!

I read this back in the 80s when it first came out. It was an amazing experience. Now 30 some years later, it has become alarmingly relevant, just like his book The Dead Zone about a man who rose to the power of the US presidency and put the entire country at risk. The Stand is about a virus that has an incredible mortality rate, very similar to Covid 19 but worse, and at a time without the internet and social media to spread the news. It is a remarkable study of characters who survive and an ultimate conflict between good and evil with some amazingly believable supernatural - or not so supernatural - forces at work. I'm reading this again because the hard copy was falling apart and I donated it somewhere. I haven't read fiction in the past 15 years, but now I'm getting back into it and Stephen King has the talent to pull me back in like no other.

I wasn't sure about this as it's the same size as a paperback, but the hardcover and binding allow it to lie flatter, unlike a paperback where I'm always worried about opening the pages too much and breaking the spine. It seems much sturdier and easier to read as a result of this hardcover binding.

I was also worried about the print being too small, but it's fine and the illustrations by Bernie Wrightson are included in this particular edition.

I have read this book about five times over the years, and three times in the uncut version. I much prefer the uncut version. It holds up and is my favourite King book and my favourite post-apocalyptic book in general. He writes the most phenomenal characters, which is what makes many of his books timeless and enjoyable.

M-O-O-N, that spells "I can't walk right now."

Every country has an epic story between good and evil. Here in India, we have the Ramayana. Seven Samurai is Japan's pride. Star Wars is famous all over the world. So is The Lord of the Rings.

But why not The Stand? Perhaps because it is filled with gruesome imagery. That should be one of the reasons why it stands out as a unique epic. The other main reason I enjoyed it was because it does not focus on the plague. The book concentrates on the mental development of its characters through the year, how they reconcile, recreate society, and the like. Stuart Redman grows less reticent over time. Fran Goldsmith learns to accept life as it comes. Nick Andros realizes his true potential as a leader. Tom Cullen learns responsibility near the end. And definitely not the least, Larry Underwood leaves behind his self-centeredness for good. Now, every novel has to have something that distinguishes itself from others. And that brings me to the supernatural element of the story.

I used the word 'supernatural' because there is no explanation behind it. That is what adds more enigma to the story. After a plague decimates 99.4% of the Earth's population, the survivors begin to have recurring dreams about two contrasting people. Some of them are attracted to the benevolent Mother Abigail in Boulder, while the rest are forced to join Randall Flagg in Vegas. Flagg is mentioned to be an immortal being, an inhuman. Mother Abigail portrays hope and goodness within, whereas Flagg is the embodiment of evil in its purest form.

Then again, there is the multitude of characters. What worries me most about reading epics is understanding each of them simultaneously. But that turned out to be real easy. Partly because each of them is unlike any other. Partly because none of them turned out to be disappointing.

Unlike other dark stories, this one makes the reader feel pity for the antagonists as well, as and when they find themselves in a dire quicksand. For this particular achievement, Stephen King deserves much more than awards.

Concerning the monstrosity of the book, don't worry about it. When King archives immersion, he will make sure that the reader doesn't feel time as well. But there is one thing to be worried about. It is by far the most disturbing story I've read. And I used the word as a compliment since it psychologically magnifies so much the pitiable state of the world and its survivors.
