Purchase options and add-ons
After escaping vile bandits, Linh is faced with a conundrum. She can either run through the Demon-filled wilds, or seek safety from a serpent monster.
The longer she forces her presence in the monster’s territory, the more she learns a Duskwalker’s heart can be nurturing. Despite her fears, she longs for the slither of his scales across her skin and the burning desire it awakens in her.
All Nathair wanted was to be left alone.
Dealing with the pressure of his fractured mind, Nathair’s return to life has been unpleasant. He’s in pain, his voice lost, and he finds himself protecting a female who is in more danger from him than she realises.
She’s broken. Though he doesn’t know if he can mend her, he craves her so fervently he will do anything to keep her. But Linh wants to return to her people, and Nathair cannot go with her.
How can Nathair convince her to choose him when he is more monstrous than any other Mavka?

I personally am a lover of all genres of romance, including the darker books. So I've loved the fact that Opal's books have gotten progressively darker as they delve into the characters traumas and mental health aspects.
This book is definitely one that delves the deepest into these subjects and I highly recommend that anyone with triggers read the warnings before starting this book.
That being said I love how well this book was written. I love how it allows a look into people's minds and how 2 people can be looking at the same thing but see and feel 2 completely different things. I also love that while she demonstrated that while connection and love and time can help you work through and overcome trauma, that the feelings and memories left behind by it are never truly gone.
As always, the writing and the spicy scenes are absolute perfection. I also love how the duskwallers have gotten progressively less human and more monstrous in each story (but I also love me some monster romances so).
This book was a masterpiece. And while I do feel that the story has not really advanced too much story/plot wise in the last few books, I trust Opal and I feel that ensuring we have a thorough understanding of who all her characters truly are, is going to vital to whatever events are coming in the last book! Cannot wait!
I also really enjoyed the spice in this book. It features a little bit of a slower burn before we get into it but it was *chefs kiss* Nathair was such a horny duskwalker in the best ways.
Overall, a soul to protect might be my favorite in the series so far, and I canNOT wait to see what the conclusion to this series brings us
My only real gripe with this book is that there was no mention of the demon king and what is happening on that front. This book felt like it could be a complete standalone where the others required the other books for world/story building.
Regardless, I love this series, and I love the inclusion of a mute MC who uses sign language. Also, not going into detail about the trauma Linh has faced was a considerate decision Opal made. You don't need the traumatic details of past events to convey why someone has PTSD and mental health struggles. I'm sad that this is the second to last book in the series but I hope the next book gives us an ending to that overarching plotline/dilemma regarding the demon king, demon village and the fae.
Nathair is one of the oldest Duskwalkers and suffers from magical mutism. He has plenty of humanity and understands the concept of consent. He has patience and understanding in helping Linh recover from her past.
Together, these two are goofy and loving. They pick on each other, but also support each other through their traumas. I wept. I literally cried at the end of the book. I’m so excited for Book 8!
While I can appreciate the reason behind wanting to give visibility to SA survivors, reading about a person fresh out of their ordeal and still actively in the deep end of that trauma is simply not enjoyable. Linh's issues are just consistent speed bumps that interrupt almost every single romantic or steamy moment because of her ptsd. It is a well written and realistic story of a woman learning to feel desire again after that horror, but the content simply isn't fun to read.
My least favorite book in the series because of the fmc and plot. I love Nathair though and all three of my stars are completely for the sake of the sweet snakey boi.
