For visual trailblazers

With extreme full-frame movie performance including high sensitivity (expanded ISO up to 409600), 15-stop wide dynamic range, 4K 120p, fast and dependable autofocusing, and extra-strong image stabilization, the α7S III again raises the bar for movie makers.

Powerful sensor and processing

Large pixels deliver high sensitivity and low noise

The new full-frame 12.1-megapixel back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor packs major innovations in light gathering, wiring and output optimization. These deliver blazing doubled readout speeds, superb image quality throughout the whole sensitivity range, 15-stop wide dynamic range, and reduced rolling shutter, with the sensor also providing focal-plane phase-detection AF.

Up to 8x more powerful BIONZ XR image processor

Along with the new sensor and its unprecedented speed, the BIONZ XR image processing engine has also been newly developed and packs up to 8x more processing power. With a future-oriented architecture, it delivers high-quality images faster for superlative still and video expression, as well as dramatically improved camera interface responsiveness.

Stunning AF performance even at 4K 120p

The new Exmor R full-frame image sensor and revolutionary BIONZ XR image processing engine deliver always-active pinpoint AF for astonishing detail in both space and time, and stunning 4K movies even at 120 frames per second or in slow motion. With the resolution and depth of field only possible from a full-frame sensor, the results are spectacular.

Superlative movie performance

10-bit 4:2:2 recording

Record right on the camera with the amazing richness of 10-bit depth and 4:2:2 colour sampling, for far greater flexibility in image grading, post-processing and compositing.

All-Intra encoding available

As well as Long GOP, All-Intra encoding is now provided. This encodes every frame independently at bitrates up to 600 Mbps, to capture complex motions more accurately for recording on either internal or external media, and allow more efficient editing workflows. [1] All-Intra (All-I) [2] Long GoP [3] Group of Pictures

Superior quality and smaller files with XAVC HS

The new XAVC HS recording format uses HEVC/H.265 encoding to achieve twice the compression efficiency of AVC/H.264 encoding, for superior image quality and smaller file sizes.

16-bit RAW HDMI output

For demanding post-production workflows, 16-bit RAW output is available via HDMI connection to compatible external recorders while XAVC HS 4K, XAVC S 4K, or XAVC S-I 4K, and proxy files are simultaneously captured in-camera.

Fast Hybrid AF for accuracy and tenacity

The wide-area AF uses intelligent tracking and on-sensor phase-detection covering most of the frame. The result is that every bit of supremely accurate and tenacious AF performance is extracted in combination with high-quality E-mount lenses, even when shooting moving subjects at shallow depths-of-field in 4K and at 120p frame rates.

Powerful focus control for solo shooters

With AF Transition Speed selectable over 7 levels, and AF Subject Shift Sensitivity over 5 levels, you can better convey your creative intentions when switching subjects or, for example, rack focusing. A simple touch can temporarily activate AF even during manual focus operation.

Real-time Eye AF for movies and stills

Real-time Eye AF uses AI to ensure pinpoint focusing precision for eyes, with performance now improved by 30% on profile or partially obscured faces. Tenacious eye tracking lets you concentrate on composition even with a shallow focus depth.

Real-time Tracking with intuitive touch operation

Real-time Tracking analyzes subject colour, pattern, depth, and face information to track the subject. Touch Tracking intuitively and automatically tracks a subject touched on the LCD screen.

In-body 5-axis image stabilization

A highly accurate image stabilization unit and gyro-sensor are provided, delivering 5-axis optical image stabilization.

Advanced still functions and performance

High ISO sensitivity

With an amazingly wide standard ISO range of 80–102400 (expandable to 40–409600 for stills), the α7S III offers incredible creative opportunities. The newly developed image sensor and image processing algorithms produce even cleaner images and more natural textures than the previous α7S II model, even when shooting in near total darkness.

Fast Hybrid AF for stills

The Fast Hybrid AF system combines speed and precision. With 759 focal plane phase-detection sensors and 425 contrast-detection points distributed across most of the image area, the α7S III quickly finds and tracks your subject throughout the frame.

Outstanding continuous shooting performance

Use your choice of mechanical or electronic shutter for continuous burst shooting, with AF/AE tracking, at up to 10 fps. Capture decisive moments with over 1000 frames of continuous uncompressed RAW shooting possible.

Vari-angle LCD monitor for comfortable movie shooting

The variable-angle 1.44 million-dot 3.0-type touch screen features a side-open design, for flexible positioning and improved visibility when mounting on gimbals or rigs.

9.44 million-dot high-definition electronic viewfinder

The new EVF offers resolution, contrast and colour unlike anything in its class. It also offers world-leading 0.9x finder magnification, a 41 ° diagonal field of view, and a 25-mm-high eyepoint.

Unique heat dissipation, for dependable recording

A unique Sony Σ (sigma) shaped graphite heatsink is built into the image-stabilization unit. This dissipates heat 5x more effectively for extended recording time, without interfering with image stabilization.

Movie-shooting comfort

Responding to feedback from professional users, the MOVIE button has been moved to the top face for improved operability in any shooting position. Mode dial ordering and speed of switching have also been improved.

New menu structure

Based on requests from our most demanding professional users, major improvements have been made to the menu structure, for improved at-a-glance readability and reduced menu navigation.

Beyond happy with this camera!
I have had this camera for a couple months now and it is literally been the camera I have been dreaming of ever since switching to Sony 5 years ago.The photo capabilities are perfect for web and social which is my primary business. The majority of the value comes from the video features.1. this camera is small and light. (I have used the FX9 and it is a monster to carry around) *this camera is hard to tell apart from FX6 and FX9 footage.2. the slow motion options look just a crisp as the 24p. (except 240fps looks softer and requires good light)3. the menu and custom dial settings are so helpful.4. Only things I could wish for are s-cinetone and the "look" of showing up to a shoot with a pro camera. The FX6 is bascially an a7siii with the electronic ND, s-cinetone, and the pro camera "look". Instead of purchasing the FX6 I have decided to rig out the a7siii a bit to look the part and invest more in lenses and potentially an extra a7siii body.5. I own the xlr-k3m and it works great for interviews and allows me to use my xlr shotgun mics.6. I bought 2 of the CFecxpress A cards are the buffer clears instantly for photography. I like to shoot on high burst and always had to wait 30 seconds on my older Sony cameras.7. The touch to focus is a dream since it tracks the subject as it moves throughout the frame. This feature is a lot slower on the FX6 which pushes me away further from buying one.Overall I am so happy with this camera!

If you're a real estate videographer/photographer, its a no brainer. This is first and foremost a video camera and photos are secondary. Keep that in mind when deciding to purchase.

I used to shoot Canon for so long, but after trying the A7Si I was hooked. Then went to the A7Sii, and now the A7Siii. Definitely a big Sony fan now. This camera paired with the Sony 24-105 and the Weebill S and you have a really great setup!

I love this camera. I chose it over the FX-3 because I wanted the viewfinder and the weather sealing the a7 SIII provides.

For a while there I felt like I had some cutting edge gear, until Sony updated its sibling with new important features and forgot about a7 SIII users entirely, it seems.

I feel like I made a mistake buying this camera, and that shouldn’t be the case given the FX-3 is $200 more. This should have been updated long ago.

I’m just left feeling forgotten by Sony. It’s absolutely insulting and unacceptable that they haven’t updated this with at least breathing compensation. How is that cameras half the price have better autofocus and more features than a $5500 camera?

The fact that basically the same camera in a different body has more features now just rubs me the wrong way. Update your cameras, Sony. It’s important for consumers to feel like their cameras have longevity. I shouldn’t have to sell my a7 SIII and get an FX-3 just to get breathing compensation. The fact that it has been done with the FX-3 proves it’s possible with that sensor, so there’s nothing stopping them from doing it, except their insistence on just selling new cameras instead of supporting older ones.

And for those saying “the a7 SIII is a hybrid, so of course it won’t get video-focused updates,” just stop. This was marketed as a video camera. It will always be a video-first camera. Hardly anyone is using this for stills. It should get most if not all of the updates s the FX-3, because it’s basically the same camera.

Just give me breathing compensation and I’ll stop complaining. I don’t need DCI 4K or anything like that, although it would be nice.

Can’t tell you how frustrated I am with their lack of support. I really hope Sony hears their customers and updates their cameras. I might switch systems if they don’t keep their products up to date.

I truly regret buying this camera. I loved this camera and still do. But Sony refuses to give it features they put in literally the reskinned version of it they call the fx3 … to add insult to injury. The a7iv gets more frequent updates and has more advanced features like focus breathing compensation. It’s insulting to everyone to forked out the money for the a7siii. I will be going back to canon sooner than later I hope.

The Good: This camera closes the gap between hybrids and cinema cameras by offering excellent picture quality and low light performance.

The Bad: I have bought 3 of these so far from: 1 from Amazon and 2 from other stores. All of these have one consistent build quality issue. Flip your screen out and then look at the bottom seam between the plastic panels, you will see a gap that will close when you press on it and open back up when you release it. Not something you wanna see on $5.5K camera as this may compromise the weather sealing. I contacted Sony’s “National Customer Support” who can only offer to repair the camera even if it was bought yesterday after recognizing it as a “factory defect”. They could have done a better job at: (1). Quality checks and workmanship. (2) Customer Support.

Pro-tip 1: Consider buying Prograde V90 Memory Cards instead of Sony’s.

Pro-tip 2: Use Joel Famularo’s Phantom LUT’s specific to the A7Siii for the “Arri” look.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST HYBRID MIRRORLESS for all kinds of photo and video work… Nothing Compares IMO

Versatile, Best in-its-class hybrid camera. High Quality, Sharp Footage, Auto Focus is amazing AF (pun intended), Low light performance of the Gods, Anazing viewfinder which i use every single day to pixel peep in broad sunlight- and with S-Log3 (PP8), a dream to color grade in post. I enjoy using this camera so much for all my client work, it has become an extension of myself and my creativity. This kind of camera makes you more creative just by the way it handles everything so well- you worry less about the technical side. I’ve had many cameras, and have sold most of them in favor of this one. I will get another soon as a B-cam. The more you learn to use it, and utilize its features to the max, the more you’ll fall in love with it. To any creator seeking to go pro, or just take their craft to the next level, this is the one stop shop for mostly everything you’ll need. Until you’ve got $$$ for a crazy cinema camera like the fx6, an ursa mini, or an ARRI, get this one first. It has what every one-man/woman-band needs to do their work with confidence. If you’re already a pro, you will love it, and it will make you a lot of money if you know how to use it. 😎

5.0 out of 5 stars MaeWood Photography’s Professional A7siii Review
Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2020
Style: Camera OnlyVerified Purchase
There is a likely reason why they are heavily bragging about the A7siii, and that is all of the other things that come with this impressive camera. I imagine that the first thing most of us will notice is the ergonomics and build quality. Both of which are outstanding. Sony users will feel right at home and with some improvements to quickly adjust your ISO, Aperture, and shutter speed.

The menu system is improved and nicely customizable to put whatever you need to adjust the most, right onto the first page. Let’s not fool ourselves; none of the cameras out there have really figured out how to do menus that make us happy. The A7siii has not figured out the magic formula, but it is getting close. I am yet to find a complaint, but I am holding back praise.

Once you start shooting, only the most curmudgeon photographer could not express satisfaction at the industry-leading autofocus. Whether using human eye focus, traditional focuses, or the even further improved animal eye focus, the latest Sony technology is an impressive bit of technological magic. The lock on subject settings allows me to track the bride coming down the aisle as she passes the guest and others who jump into the frame. The A7siii sticks with her and does not jump to the new and closer object. Sure this is rather easy during staged shoots on manual, but for the unpredictable one take video situations… highly advantageous.

Some other standout advantageous aspects are in the memory cards, batteries, heat management, and 10 bit 4:2:2. Memory cards are getting expensive! Many new cameras only allow expensive memory options. You do need a certified v90 SD card ($100 or so for 128GB) for the 120fps at the highest settings, but 60fps with excellent 4k and 10-bit quality has been working flawlessly with a bargain-basement v60 SD card. That means for most applications, the A7siii is the best option for keeping storage cost manageable and reasonable.

Battery Life has been unremarkable, but this is an improvement because more technology and demand are being placed on the camera. Therefore the battery life is lasting as long as typical but getting more out of each drop and with no heat issues. Yes, no heat issues on the A7siii. Personally, most of my video shooting is highspeed and in the desert of Phoenix. August weddings are in brutal heat. The A7siii has no care or concern. One heat warning has been observed, but that was it, just a warning, and this is in the hottest of conditions faced but 99.99% of videographers.

The only area where the A7siii does not shine is in the same area all of these mirrorless cameras fall short (in comparison to DSLRs), photos. Maybe it is me, but DSLRs take better quality pictures. Though the DSLR pictures are much harder to obtain because of focus and shooting speeds when you nail a DSLR photo is better than a mirrorless. Still, the A7siii is nearly guaranteed to capture multiple in-focus action shots.

The A7siii will be my primary camera for the foreseeable future which is likely to be for many years into the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Camera You'll Ever Own

There's nothing to dislike, except maybe the cost of the memory card that you'll need to buy for 4k Video... but once you see the video quality you'll forget you spent all that hard earned money.

Image quality is out of this world, video quality is the closest I've ever come to broadcast grade and to be honest, I would even say it's just as good. With the right lens you'll be capturing amazing photos in the sun or in low light. It works super well for indoor and outdoor sports, portraits etc.

Sony's included software is terrible compared to what you get for free from Canon so you'll need something to go over your images with, Capture One works very well for me. The video format may come out incompatible with your video editor, so you'll want to download an app like HandBrake to convert the files. I use PowerDirector 21 to edit video (won't pay Adobe a subscription).

I bought the aS7 III this week mainly for the 4K 60fps capability, which is great. But the overall image quality improvement over my A7 III is unbelievable! I work in ambient light and even here in sunny Florida, house interiors can be dark in the middle of the day, even with lights on. I shot a test video in my own home at midday and the improvement in color, brightness and detail was amazing. Really no need to use noise reduction on darker clips, and no noise even at higher ISOs. But what blew me away most was I shot in 4K-60 but exported it in 1080p and didn't realize it. I thought I was looking at 4K. Just stunning results. Best photographic equipment buy EVER!
