From the manufacturer

Newly developed AI processing unit

1

A whole new level of camera intelligence

State-of-the-art AI processing uses detailed information about human forms and postures to dramatically improve the camera’ subject recognition accuracy and make full use of its potential resolution. Also, subject recognition has been expanded to include a number of new subject types, including vehicles and insects.

AI-driven performance

1

1

1

1

AI processing unit for advanced subject recognition

The α7R V is equipped with an AI processing unit specifically dedicated to processing significant amounts of data to enable more accurate recognition of subjects and recognition of a wider range of subject types.

Human pose estimation

The α7R V uses subject form data to recognize movement, providing a roughly 60% improvement in human eye recognition4. Human pose estimation uses learned human forms and postures to precisely recognize not just eyes, but body and head position, making it possible to lock onto and track a subject facing away from the camera or wearing a mask, for example.

Recognize a wider range of subjects

In addition to humans, animals and birds, the camera now recognizes insects, cars, trains and airplanes5, providing even greater flexibility and reliability when shooting both stills and movies. Heads and bodies are now recognized in addition to eyes (Real-time Eye AF) for the Human, Animal, and Bird settings.

Improved accuracy of WB control

The α7R V’s AWB function has evolved in tandem with the camera’s AI capabilities. In addition to the “Visible Light + IR sensor” on the front of the body, the camera’s AI processing unit helps to achieve more accurate white balance in difficult lighting, such as when the subject is in shadow.

Extraordinary resolution

1

A new high in α resolution6

The output from the 35 mm full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor, with approximately 61.0 million effective pixels7, is processed in real time to the fullest extent by the advanced BIONZ XR processing engine to deliver breathtaking detail in both stills and movies.

35 mm full-frame image sensor with 61.0 effective megapixels7

The sensor is packed with Sony’s image sensor technologies, with effective noise reduction realized by its back-illuminated structure, plus gapless on-chip lenses, AR coating (anti-reflection seal glass), and the elimination of an optical low pass filter.

Consistently accurate exposure and colour

The latest BIONZ XR engine achieves even better exposure control and colour reproduction accuracy. A new AE algorithm is capable of detecting the skin area in faces and controlling exposure accordingly when shooting stills and movies.

Advanced 5-axis in-body optical stabilization

The α7R V has been upgraded to offer up to 8 steps of stabilization9 in the body alone, for the first time in the α series. This achieves effective stabilization for slow-shutter shots of interiors or night scenes where it is preferable to avoid the need for increased sensitivity.

Next-generation AF

1

1

1

1

Real-time Recognition AF

The α7R V’s AF system delivers dramatically enhanced overall performance, drawing on major improvements in subject recognition performance. Deep learning technology supports powerful Real-time Recognition AF as well as more reliable Real-time Tracking12 which is supported by higher Fast Hybrid AF performance over a wider area.

Faster, more precise wide-area AF

The immense processing power of the new BIONZ XR engine and updated algorithms achieve notably improved AF performance. Up to 693 phase-detection points13 in a high-density array cover approximately 79% of the image area.

Accurate AF in low EV -4.0 light

The latest AF algorithms enable high AF precision down to light levels as low as EV -4.0 in AF-S mode14. The α7R V also includes a Focus Priority mode that provides more reliable AF in low light or when using smaller apertures.

Focus bracketing to capture the best shot

The camera will automatically shoot up to 299 images with sequentially shifted focus points, with custom intervals and sequence specified by the user. Pick the perfect shot, or post-process multiple shots to achieve creative composites with impossible focus depth.

Movies with spectacular detail and presence

High quality 8K movie recording

The XAVC HS format enables in-camera recording of high-resolution, high-quality 8K (7680 x 4320) 24p (25p)19 movies with efficient HEVC/H.265 compression, bringing out the very best in Sony’s lenses and taking full advantage of the resolution provided by the sensor and full-pixel readout. Even the finest subject details are faithfully captured.

Outstanding 4K movie recording up to 60p(50p)

Full frame and Super 35mm formats can be selected for 4K movie recording. Full pixel readout in the Super 35 mm mode without the need for pixel binning21 makes 2.6x oversampling possible for 4K movies22. The XAVC S-I (All-Intra) or the XAVC HS format is supported, with 10-bit 4:2:2 colour sampling.

Expressive S-Cinetone

Based on the technology of CineAlta cameras such as the acclaimed VENICE, S-Cinetone delivers natural mid-tones that are essential to healthy-looking skin tones, plus soft colours and gorgeous highlights.

Breathing compensation for consistent angle of view

When shooting movies, breathing compensation uses Clear Image Zoom technology to maintain a consistent angle of view27, suppressing changes that may occur due to shifts in focus position. Breathing metadata can also be used in post production.

This camera is a solid unit. Wow.

I've upgraded from the Sony A7iii and the jump from 24mp to 61mp is noticeable. I've always liked to use the mechanical shutter and the a7rv has a very nice quiet shutter to it in comparison to the a7iii.

What the seller for me was, the focus stacking feature that you can adjust to as many pictures taken in a bracket.

The updated Sony menu system has a much nicer and user friendly interface.

It does have a bigger grip and slightly larger frame in comparison to the a7iii.

It takes CF Express cards and I am still using SD cards for now (I am not doing any video so there's no need for me to make that jump quite yet).

If you're on the fence about this solid camera, you won't regret buying it.

I currently own 2 A7RIII's that I've used professionally for a few years. I was looking to upgrade and checked out the A1 and others in the Sony line. I didn't feel the A1 really fit my needs, or budget, so I waited. I'm glad I did because I love everything about this model.

Mainly a portrait and wedding photographer, I wanted to stay with the R line for the resolution capabilities and really didn't need 20 fps or any crazy video capabilities. The A7R5 has a 61 MP sensor that delivers amazing detail in images. I often crop my images and really benefit from the sensor size. Coupled with any G-Master lens, this camera delivers sharp images. I shoot mainly with the 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.2, the 100mm 2.8 (5.6), and the 70-200 2.8. All deliver exceptional results on this body.

Focus/Auto Focus: The Autofocus, as usual, is excellent. You can set the Eye AF to target human, bird/animal, animals, birds, insects, car/train, and Airplane. I haven't used it on anything but my dogs and cats so far, and so far it has been flawless. I used the Eye AF on the A7RIII almost exclusively. It really makes shooting with lenses with really narrow DoF very easy. Additionally, it has human movement AF that keeps focus on the subject even when the eyes aren't visible (like when shooting a subject from behind). I have not really tried out the video focus capabilities because it's winter in PA and too cold to be outside shooting (haha). It has 693 Phase Detection Points too!

Menu: The menu has changed styles and I definitely like the change. With the A7RIII, a rarely used the touch screen, but with the new menu system on this, I do and even having it only a week, I can say it's definitely improved. As usual, with Sony Menus, it takes a bit of research to find out what and where everything is. I'm sure with a little practice, the new menu will be extremely usable.

Video Capabilities: EDITED July 17, 2023 - One thing to note about this model, and other "R" Models in the Sony Lineup, is that this is a RESOLUTION camera, meant for stills and delivering HIGH RESOLUTION as the "R" in the model name suggests. It is NOT Sony's best video camera in my opinion, and with 10 fps, not the best for shooting stills in sports. If you're a sports shooter, look at the A1 or A9. If you are mainly interested in vlogging or video capabilities, look at the FX3, A7C, or A7S III. Sony has a variety of models to choose from that are tailored for your specific needs. I am 90% portrait photography, so the A7R5 is what I needed. I'm glad they improved the video capabilities, because I do sometimes take video. This can shoot 8K @ 24p and 4K 60p. Way more than I'd really need, but not as good as some other models out there. There are some good videos on YouTube that talk about the video capabilities on this camera and mention the ever painful rolling shutter issue.

Flip Screen: The new flip screen design is amazing. I struggled with the tilt screen on the A7RIII for a long time. If you find yourself in a situation where you have the camera extended high above your head, or at any weird viewing angle, the new flip screen is easily visible. Contrast that with the previous models, where you only had a limited angle to view the screen because of the design. With the A7R5, you can view at any angle you desire, which is absolutely amazing.

Size: Ergonomically, the size is a little bigger than the A7RIII. I personally like the larger grip because I always felt like the A7RIII was a little small in my hand. The A7R5 has a bigger grip and overall is slightly larger than the III. (In the photos, the A7R5 is on the right, and the A7RIII on the left).

Storage: A7R5 has dual SD/CFExpress slots. For the sports photographers, that's another benefit over the A7R3. I most likely won't use CFExpress cards as the cost is fairly prohibitive, but it's nice to know that this body has that capability. For portraiture, SD cards handle everything very well.

Side Ports: On the side ports, they've replaced the 'floppy' cover with a hinge design. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet since I haven't hooked up external monitors or anything. They seem pretty solidly built but one would have to use them a lot to test. One thing to note is that if you do have cables plugged into the USB or HDMI ports on this body, it can block the screen a bit. This is overcome by using the flip out mechanism to bring the screen away from the body more. Not a deal breaker at all.

Viewfinder/Screen: Beautiful. Monitor is 2,095,000 dots and the viewfinder is over 9,400,000 dots with 100% coverage.

Continuous Shooting: It can capture 10 frames per second and caps out at 583 frames (RAW) and 1000 frames (JPG). Pretty beastly.

Image Sizes with 14-bit depth (I shoot 3:2 Raw so I get the largest files).

3:2 JPEG / Raw
60 MP (9504 x 6336)
26 MP (6240 x 4160)
15 MP (4752 x 3168)

4:3 JPEG / Raw
54 MP (8448 x 6336)
23 MP (5552 x 4160)
13 MP (4224 x 3168)

16:9 JPEG / Raw
51 MP (9504 x 5344)
22 MP (6240 x 3512)
13 MP (4752 x 2672)

1:1 JPEG / Raw
40 MP (6336 x 6336)
17 MP (4160 x 4160)
10 MP (3168 x 3168)

It also has interval shooting, self-timer, electronic shutter (7 fps @ 61MP), 5-axis stabilization and sensor shift, IP streaming capability, WiFi MIMO 5 (5 GHz or 2.4 GHz), Fast/Slow Motion Support. One thing it doesn't have is the GPS Positioning.

I'm really happy with the capabilities of this camera and look forward to shooting with it quite a bit. It comes in way less than the A1 on price and since I didn't need that capability, this model is perfect for my needs. Highly recommend!

UPDATE: So, I've had the camera for a while now and finally did some shooting with a model friend and we generated these images. I added 2 images to the lineup. The camera is all it's cracked up to be.

UPDATE 2 - 16-OCT-2023: Still going strong and I love it even more. I don't even use the A7RIII any more because it seems inferior to this body in terms of resolution and image quality, which is to be expected. I took the III out for a couple shots, and it didn't last long. I realized quickly that the A7R5 is just so much nicer to use. I'm going to be looking for another body in 2024, and I'm considering a backup 5 or maybe something with better video specs... but not sure yet. Still feel the same way about this body as I did when I wrote the review, it's my go-to camera and is still delivering crisp beautiful images with no issues.

Hands down it's been worth every penny! I've owned many cameras including the a7III, a7RIII, a7SIII in the sony lineup; and this, a7RV, is by far the best. I thought that the video features in my a7SIII would mean I still need it for the video side of this, BUT the photo-first a7RV is so good at video too! and with the special flip screen and advanced autofocus and newer menu style, it's honestly my best and most convenient camera for photos AND video!!

I don't regret buying it at all and have been super happy with it. From family camping trips, to studio shoots, to weddings and landscapes; it's phenomenal

Please don't buy this product, as the seal was not there at all in the box and it was open. The image shoes it all. I was happy and excited in opening the product and suddenly noticed this and was really upset. The product was dusty inside when opened,so it is a used product. I don't think Sony does like this. Please people buy these products from all there savings. Stop doing this. Thank you.

On the Sony mirrorless ecosystem, this is the greatest photography camera ever.

It’s the same sensor as the r iv but with the quality of life improvements that make professional work even more seemingly effortless.

The 61mpsensor is detailed, razor sharp and an utter joy to play with in most lighting conditions. I’m still a little disappointed with low light but that’s not what this is for and anyone getting into this price point of professional photography equipment should look away if they didn’t already know that.

The 8k video is beyond stunning…when rolling shutter is not a factor. It usually is, so just be mindful.

Dual SD card slots make this a wedding photography champ.

The body and the grip fit comfortably in my above average sized palms. But if I’m not using a battery grip, I do use a walnut wood base plate extension so my pinky isn’t left out.

The weight is solid without being tiresome. I can easily juggle this body on a battery grip and an a7c in the other hand for a 12-hour wedding shoot, no problem. (If I were wielding two r v’s, that would be tiresome)

The eye autofocus, while not perfect, is in a class of it’s own.

I’m most impressed with Sony’s new auto white balance. For photo work, I just leave it permanently on. I’m loving skin tones on a Sony and I don't and the haters can hate.
