The FE 16–35 mm F2.8 GM II delivers dynamic wide-angle perspectives with amazing resolution and bokeh while maximizing the speed and performance of advanced camera bodies. Unequalled AF performance provides significant advantages for stills and movies in a versatile lens that is also the smallest and lightest of its kind.
FEATURES

|
|
|
---|---|---|---|
Breathtaking G Master resolutionHigh spatial resolution results in detailed rendering of dynamic wide-angle scenes right out to the image edges throughout the 16–35 mm zoom range, even with the lens wide open. Five aspherical elements include three XA (extreme aspherical) elements, and aberration is controlled for a superb blend of high resolution and gorgeous bokeh. |
Extraordinary resolution and bokehSmooth, beautiful bokeh that can add depth to this remarkable lens’s outstanding resolution is made possible by a large F2.8 maximum aperture, innovative optical design, and an advanced 11-blade aperture unit. Gorgeous circular bokeh can add extra appeal and expressive impact to a wide range of images. |
Revealing close-up performanceThe FE 16–35 mm F2.8 GM II offers outstanding close-up performance with a minimum focusing distance of 0.22 meters (0.73 ft) throughout the zoom range and a maximum magnification of 0.32x. This makes it possible to get close for dynamic perspectives while deep bokeh adds extra expressive capability. |
Perfectly balanced for moviesIn addition to being lightweight, the FE 16–35 mm F2.8 GM II has been designed for ideal balance with minimal extension when zooming. A centre of gravity that changes very little contributes to agile, stable manoeuvrability when shooting hand-held, and eliminates the need for readjustment after changing the zoom setting when using a gimbal. |

Designed for refined movie imageryThe latest lens technology reduces focus breathing, focus shift, and axis shift when zooming. Image movement and angle of view variations are minimized for smooth movie imagery without distractions. XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors and an advanced aperture unit also reduce noise and vibration that can interfere with movie recording. |
Clarity with minimal flare and ghostingFlare and ghosting can occur when the sun or other strong light source is in the frame. Sony’s original Nano AR Coating II produces a uniform anti-reflection coating on lens surfaces, effectively subduing flare and ghosting in tricky lighting conditions. Internal reflections that can reduce clarity are also suppressed. |
Smooth, quiet AF for moviesFocus is especially critical when shooting slow motion or 4K/8K movies. The FE 16–35 mm F2.8 GM II works with α-series bodies to reliably acquire focus and track even fast-moving subjects thanks to four XD Linear Motors and advanced control technology that achieve extraordinarily smooth, quiet, precise AF performance for movie shooting. |
Natural, linear manual focus responseLinear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually. Focus ring rotation translates directly to a corresponding change in focus, so control feels immediate and precise when shooting stills or movies. |

---|---|---|---|
AF that is precise and fastWith a floating focus mechanism that includes four XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors and precise lens control, the FE 16–35 mm F2.8 GM II achieves up to approximately 2x3 higher AF speed High-speed continuous shooting at up to 30fps is possible with Sony’s α1 body4. |
Versatile hands-on aperture controlThe FE 16–35 mm F2.8 GM II features both a click ON/OFF switch and an iris lock switch for quick, flexible aperture control. The aperture ring click stops can be turned ON to provide tactile feedback when shooting stills, or OFF for seamless, silent aperture control when shooting movies. |
Customisable focus hold buttonsTwo customizable focus hold buttons are provided for easy access and convenient control when shooting in horizontal or vertical orientation. One function can be assigned to the focus hold buttons from the body menus. |
Small, light, and versatileAlthough the FE 16–35 mm F2.8 GM II is the world’s smallest, lightest F2.8 16–35 mm zoom5, it delivers superb image quality with XA elements and Super ED glass in an advanced optical design. Lightweight XD Linear Motors further contribute to a low weight of just 19.3 oz. (547 gram); 20% lighter than the FE 16–35 mm F2.8 GM. Overall length is just 4.5 in (111.5 mm). |

Compact lens hood designWhile effectively blocking unwanted light, the new lens hood supplied with the FE 16–35 mm F2.8 GM II is smaller than the lens hood supplied with the FE 16–35 mm F2.8 GM, making it less obtrusive in use or when stored in a camera bag. |
Fluorine front element coatingThe front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants, while making it easier to wipe off any contaminants or fingerprints that do become attached to the lens surface. |
Dust- and moisture-resistant design6The FE 16–35 mm F2.8 GM II offers improved dust and moisture resistance6. All seams feature structural sealing, buttons and switches are fitted with silicone rubber gaskets, and a rubber ring seals the lens mount. All of these refinements work together to minimize the possibility of dust and moisture incursion in challenging outdoor environments. |

This lens on my Sony A1 is absolutely brilliant. I have the Sigma 20mm 1.4 Art, which is also an amazing lens, but it’s just way too big and heavy. The Sony 20mm 1.8 G is under half the weight of the Sigma, which is an easy trade for that 2/3-stop difference. In fact, after some tests I’ve discovered that the actual transmission difference is only about a half-stop between the two.
Even though they’re both 20mm, the Sony G is noticeably wider than the Sigma. The Sony also exhibits a bit of focus breathing whereas the Sigma doesn’t.
Both are super sharp lenses, but the Sony G is noticeably sharper when pixel peeping. The Sony also focuses quicker and more confidently, as well as having a much closer minimum focus distance. Often when using the Sigma with a flash to cover dancing at the end of a wedding reception, I would have to stop the lens down to around f/2.8 otherwise most shots would slightly miss focus. With the Sony G I can shoot wide open in this scenario and it almost always nails focus, tack-sharp.
If you’re looking for a 20mm for Sony FE then this is the lens to get.
I also like the round lens hood (as opposed to the pedal design on the original 70-200). I never understood why the pedal design was needed for anything longer than 35mm. This is a great walk around lens for street portrait, like at a parade for example.
I used to really dislike white lens body with the black focus and zoom rings, but have since come to like them. I suppose it can be a drawback, as it SHOUTS "Pro gear" when you may want to blend in more, but at the same time, the white reflects the heat better and with longer focal lengths, the distortion is less affected.
Over all, this is a top notch lens. Highly recommend for anyone who prefers the longer focal length zoom range over the wide angles.

The size and weight are reduced making it more attractive for travel and video. It takes up less space in your bag and less weight making it a preferred choice for those that use this less a lot.
The aperture ring is great if you are used to the other Sony lenses with it. Send more natural for those that have taken photos on a more manual camera.
Photo quality overall is improved over version 1 and you will see the improvement in the corners and overall sharpness.
One great feature is you can get closer to focus on your subject as close to 8.7 inches vs 11 on version 1.
The Sony 16-35 II is a great upgrade if you use for video and need a lighter/smaller lens or you use the lens a lot and want to benefit from the smaller size and weight. Increased image quality is a bonus since the 16-35 already had good image quality.
