Shoot great video, wherever you goThe ZV-1 is built to get great shots while you’re moving. There is a whole mess of professional reviews of this camera out there. I dont want to be "yet another" review that reveals the same info.
I'm a hobby shooter that has a sony A7III and a bunch of lenses. I primarily shoot action photos in low iso (concerts, stage lit sports/art (dance), hockey) -- generally indoors. I like high iso clean photos. I also do take short 10 second video clips and make montages with the footage for my childrens' sports clubs.
I grew tired of taking my SLR and lenses with me to travel and to events local and far. In fact , a lot of venues i shoot do not allow detachable lens cameras inside -- unless i have media passes which i only have access to in a handful of gigs. So for the rest of the venues? I want a point&shoot camera, inexpensive, that does EXCELLENT video and photo, and has the be SIGNIFICANTLY better than my pixel 7pro to that it justifies the inconvenience of taking a camera , rather than my phone.
Is this you? read on.
So basically long story short
1. this takes AMAZING stills. even at 12800 iso shot raw, this thing with 1" sensor STILL takes AMAZING shots in 2023 even if this is an older model (newer one is mark II). This older model has 24-70 with f/1.8-2.8 which has a longer range than newer MARK II 18-50 f/1.8-4. I guess theres less wide angle but thats not as important to me (maybe it is for you). Maybe the sensor tech is better on MARKII but i have to say, Just look at my picture comparison. The picture is between RAW iso12800 with NO processing, versus Lightroom denoise at 40%. You can shoot at high iso and get some OK shots but then post processing, the image is absolutely amazing and still usable because the iso grain on sony sensor is totally usable.
2. Video is fantastic. why? because its clean, and AF during video is far superior to any camera phone. This is what makes the biggest different to me. also the multi mic is far superior to my phone camera. Also i cant use my hotshoe and input better mic audio with it if i wanted.
For those two reasons, I am OK with the inconvenience of taking this point and shoot camera over just pixel7pro. Because it just produces much better stills and video, and there is a minor cost to taking another device over just the phone. If the venue allows for SLR? then by far i'd rather take my full sensor A7 III camera.
The only little caveats for you to know?
1. i'm used to sony UI so i can nav pretty quick to get what i want but for a new sony user, the UI is horrible. I MUCH prefer canon/nikon UI over sonys. hands down. I dont know why sony doesnt just learn from them and improve it.
2. this older gen zv1 has partial touch sensitive ui ... mainly its wheel and button driven navigation,. I believe the newer MARKII zv1 has a better touch screen support though.
3. no EVF or pop up flash..... obviously ... but i RARELY use that anyway
4. SONY's mobile "Edge" app is horrible. but i have to say, CAnon's and nikon's is equally horrid too. So the "instant" publishing to social, is just as bad as any other company's phone app. The bottom line is, at least u can pick your footage and tranfer them to your phone if you want instant social media uploading. it works but it's super clunky.
In the end, considering the fact that you can get this camera under 900 taxes in (amazon warehouse has some great deals!) --- this is still among the best point&shoot cameras that money can buy in 2023 that does everything BETTER than the latest top camera phones and therefore worth the hassle of bringing with you alongside your phone.
So thats my super quick review. hope it helps

Easily links up to my existing equipment and delivers superb results when on low budget and being highly motile.
Overall, the footage is really good, and easy to carry (can fit into your pocket).
It's better than my iPhone 13, and 14 Pro Max (footage quality), it has built-in Beauty Effect, and you can set it to LOW and get a great "filtered" look.
HOWEVER...
THE HEATING ISSUE drove me a bit crazy.
I don't know how people can say this camera can record up to 30-40m on 4k.
My max recording time on 4k 24p & 30p is around 10-12m before the camera shuts off due to high temperature.
I've done so much research, I set the camera temperature setting to HIGH and switched from 30p to 24p, but still didn't work.
People mentioned you can buy a separate cage + build a fan on it to prevent overheating issues. (I mean, that defeat the purpose of the portability, doesn't it?)
I don't know why in this modern age, Sony still can't solve their camera overheating problem (for over a decade).
If you don't want to face the overheating issue, I recommend recording only with 1080p.
Also, Keep in mind it does have a "crop" factor, especially with SteadyShot activated.

I'll preface what's about to come by saying that I know my way around a camera. I'm no David Bailey, but I can adjust settings to get the image I want/need pretty well.
After waiting a couple of weeks for the ZV1 to be shipped, I was excited when it finally arrived. That excitement wore off within an hour, and the Sony is now back in its box and ready to be returned. Here's why.
1) The small sensor doesn't cope well with fine patterns and creates HORRIBLE moire. The larger APS-C sensor on the Canon copes far better (there's still some moire, but it's a lot less noticeable)
2) The ZV1 registered insane amounts of flicker from my background lights - again, the Canon has no problems with them.
3) The zoom on the Sony SUCKS. On most cameras, you can get exactly the zoom you want by rotating a ring. On the ZV1 you only get a rocker button with a severe delay. So, by the time it realizes you've stopped zooming, it's already gone way past the focal length you wanted. You're then into a game of cat and mouse, tapping the rocker one way, then back the other, and so on until you get somewhere near the zoom you were trying to achieve.
4) The f1.8 lens's low light performance isn't noticeably better than my Canon's f4 kit lens. Even the Bokeh effect is pretty much indistinguishable
So, back to the drawing board. I'll look at the A6100/A6400 again, or maybe stick with Canon and just go to the SL3.

One of the standout features of this camera is the flip screen, which makes it incredibly easy to frame shots and capture perfect selfies or vlog footage. The touchscreen display is intuitive and responsive, adding to the overall user experience.
I also appreciate the built-in microphone, which delivers clear and crisp audio, eliminating the need for external microphones in most situations. The defocus setting is another favorite of mine, allowing me to achieve beautiful background blur and professional-looking shots effortlessly.
My only minor gripe is that it would have been nice if the camera came with a battery charger instead of just a USB cable for charging. However, this is a small inconvenience compared to the overall quality and performance of the camera.
In summary, the Sony ZV-1 Digital Camera is a game-changer for content creators, vloggers, and YouTubers. It delivers exceptional quality, ease of use, and versatility, making it a must-have tool for anyone serious about creating top-notch content. Highly recommended!
