33.0 megapixel13 full-frame CMOS sensor

Delivering excellent image quality in both stills and movies, the α7C II’s 33.0 megapixel 13 Exmor R CMOS image sensor marks a significant step-up from its predecessor. The enhanced AF performance and improved noise reduction are supported by an impressively wide 15-stop14 dynamic range.

Advanced BIONZ XR engine

The advanced BIONZ XR processing engine delivers up to eight times15 more processing power than its predecessor. It minimizes processing latency while boosting movie and still image processing power, achieving natural gradations, realistic colour, low noise, superior image quality and fast menu response.

AI processing unit for advanced subject recognition

The α7C II is equipped with an AI processing unit that can handle significant amounts of data, enabling more accurate recognition of subjects and recognition of a wider range of subject types.

Selectable RAW image sizes and quality

Lossless RAW image compression provides efficient compression for smaller file sizes with no loss in image quality, enabling the camera to shoot up to 27 frames in continuous bursts. There are three lossless-compression image sizes to suit any application, and a Light image quality selection that generates less data is provided for JPEG and HEIF images.

Realize your vision with Creative Look

Set the visual mood with Creative Look, which offers 10 customizable presets so you can capture the world the way you want. The presets can be used as they are or eight parameters can be adjusted, including contrast, saturation, and shadows, allowing you to create instantaneously shareable stills and movies in-camera without the need for post-production editing. Customized Creative Look settings can be stored as Custom Look selections for later recall and use.

Consistently accurate exposure and colour

The new high-powered BIONZ XR processing engine works with an advanced AE algorithm to detect the skin area of faces and adjust exposure accordingly for both stills and movies. This achieves consistent exposure control even in challenging shooting conditions when the subject is backlit, in shadow, over-illuminated in direct sunlight, or not directly facing the camera. It also produces more natural human skin tones and sky and foliage colours.

Log recording with LUT previews

The α7C II boasts an S-Log3 gamma curve that emphasizes gradation characteristics from shadows to mid-grey (18% grey), achieving 14+ stops of latitude17. S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3. Cine colour gamut settings are also provided. You can also apply a custom LUT (Look Up Table) to the camera’s monitor image while recording with a Log gamma curve, providing a preview of how the footage will look after processing.

Advanced 10-bit 4:2:2 video encoding

In-camera 10-bit 4:2:2 recording is available when using Long GOP or All-Intra16 compression, making it easier to achieve smooth, natural gradations during editing and colour grading.

AI based auto framing

S-Cinetone for a cinematic look

Utilizing the same colour science from Sony’s highly regarded Cinema Line, S-Cinetone delivers natural mid-tones that are essential to healthy-looking skin tones, plus soft colours and gorgeous highlights.

Reliable recognition of a wider range of subjects

The α7C II features a powerful AI processing unit, capable of human, animal, bird, insect, car/train and airplane20 recognition. Animal recognition now recognizes the eyes of some grazing and small animals, in addition to the eyes and heads of dogs, cats and similarly featured animals. It can even recognize these animals when their eyes are obscured from view. The camera also comes with bird recognition, enabling it to pinpoint the eyes of a variety of bird types, as well as recognizing birds’ heads and bodies.

Human pose estimation for more accurate subject recognition

With its innovative AI processing unit, the α7C II can accurately recognize human movement. Human pose estimation technology recognizes not just eyes, but also body and head positions with high precision, enabling it to lock onto and track a subject facing away from the camera or with their face partially obscured.

AI-based Auto Framing for movies22

Using AI-based subject recognition technology, the Auto Framing feature automatically crops for optimum framing when shooting movies. Even when the camera is mounted on a tripod, the framing is continually adjusted so that the recorded footage looks like the subject was being followed by a camera operator. Accurate tracking is possible even when the camera is being operated remotely via the Creators’ App23 on a smartphone.

Advanced 5-axis and 7.0-step27 image stabilization

Handheld shooting for stills got even better, thanks to the α7C II’s high-precision image stabilization unit, advanced gyro sensors, and optimized image stabilization algorithms that effectively correct camera shake, achieving 7.0-step stabilization27. Compatible lenses with built-in image stabilization26 combine with improved synchronization between the body and lens to provide even more stable framing. [1] Yaw [2] Roll [3] Pitch

Controls designed for smooth, efficient shooting

The α7C II features a new Still/Movie/S and Q dial, allowing fast, independent selection. It’s conveniently located next to the mode dial, which can then be used to easily select the exposure mode and other key settings for each shooting mode.

Dust and moisture resistant design30

The α7C II is well sealed at critical buttons and dials, and interlocking body seams add double protection, providing excellent resistance to dust and moisture in challenging outdoor conditions.30

Stream top-quality live content

Connected to a personal computer or smartphone32 via USB, the α7C II can function as a 4K (2160p) webcam. Large-aperture lenses, narrow depth of field, and bokeh can be used to create striking images, and advanced AF functions such as Eye AF support online meetings and live streaming events.

Intuitive touch control menus

Simply swipe in from the left or right edge of the shooting display to reveal touch icons that allow quick changes to the shooting mode and more. The function (Fn) menu can be displayed by swiping up on the monitor. Assign frequently used still and movie parameters to the function menu to access them with a simple swipe. Long-press an icon on the display to jump to the related custom setup settings.

Wide-area, high-density AF offers speed and precision

The α7C II achieves notably improved AF performance through the immense processing speed and power of the BIONZ XR engine and updated algorithms. It uses up to 759 phase detection points28 in a high-density array that cover approximately 94% of the image area when shooting stills, enabling it to recognize your subject even when they only occupy a small area of the frame.

Tenacious Real-time Tracking21

The α7C II boasts greatly improved subject recognition, offering higher reliability in a wider range of shooting situations. Specify a subject and half-press the shutter button to prompt the camera to start tracking, leaving you free to concentrate on framing and composition.

Vari-angle monitor enhances shooting flexibility

A side-opening vari-angle monitor provides excellent positioning and framing freedom for handheld and gimbal-mounted shooting. It offers a huge advantage when shooting in challenging professional environments, where very low ground-level or other shots may be required. The large 3.0 type touch-panel monitor also incorporates 1.03 million-dot (approx.) resolution with a 3:2 aspect ratio, providing ample brightness for clear and easy viewing in bright outdoor settings.

My use case is photos and small video clips of my vacations. Here are my thoughts about the A7CII in no particular orderInitially it seemed like battery life was going to be much lower, but in real world usage of shooting vacation pics, there's practically no difference. It lasts me 2-3 days, ymmv. The size and weight difference may not be significant from the specs, but it's definitely noticeable. It is much easier to carry in my hand and it's less torture on my shoulder when in my bag.The creators app is way better than the old Imaging Edge app: it connects MUCH faster, and there are more controls for remote shooting. The shutter button of the A7CII needs to be depressed slightly more than the one on the A7III, I liked the latter better but no biggie.Same for the ON OFF switch, it takes a bit of getting used to. I prefer the older implementation.Flippy screen! Love it. Something that really bothered me on the A7III.For a casual shooter like me, the number of custom buttons is just enough. The new menu system is such a great improvement from the old one that I can't bear using the A7III's anymore. Finally full touch functionality for tracking/focus, AE, settings, and also shooting. The auto mode is a lot better than the A7III. It means I can just switch to auto, hand the camera to my wife and I can be guaranteed a good shot. As long as the horizon isn't tilted lol.AF was already great on the A7III but it's CRAZY GOOD now. I've clicked pics and videos of running dogs and it latched on throughout. Only when the subject gets really small in the frame does it start to fail. The viewfinder is not as good as the A7III's. If you want to compose using it with your other eye open as well, it won't work because the image is too small in the viewfinder.I'm loving that the camera now supports streaming mode, people can now see me in all my splendor in zoom calls. Although I did run into it overheating and shutting off around the 1 hour mark. Battery life does not drain when connected to the PC by USB C as long as you have a good cable and a higher power output port.On that note, the USB port is on the left side on the top, so when the screen is flipped out the cable tends to be over the screen. Not ideal. The built in timelapse and bulb mode settings is great, I had a separate USB remote shutter release for my A7III that I don't need anymore.I much prefer the unmarked exposure compensation dial on the A7CII.

Initially it seemed like battery life was going to be much lower, but in real world usage of shooting vacation pics, there's practically no difference. It lasts me 2-3 days, ymmv.

The size and weight difference may not be significant from the specs, but it's definitely noticeable. It is much easier to carry in my hand and it's less torture on my shoulder when in my bag.

The creators app is way better than the old Imaging Edge app: it connects MUCH faster, and there are more controls for remote shooting.

The shutter button of the A7CII needs to be depressed slightly more than the one on the A7III, I liked the latter better but no biggie.

Same for the ON OFF switch, it takes a bit of getting used to. I prefer the older implementation.

Flippy screen! Love it. Something that really bothered me on the A7III.

For a casual shooter like me, the number of custom buttons is just enough.

As long as the horizon isn't tilted lol.

AF was already great on the A7III but it's CRAZY GOOD now. I've clicked pics and videos of running dogs and it latched on throughout. Only when the subject gets really small in the frame does it start to fail.

The viewfinder is not as good as the A7III's. If you want to compose using it with your other eye open as well, it won't work because the image is too small in the viewfinder.

Probably it is just me that’s run out of luck. But I'm starting to wonder if Amazon's definition of "new" has changed these days. The camera itself is good, I like it. However giving this purchase one star doesn't even begin to cover my frustration. I paid the full price for what I believed was a “new” camera, not something that had been marked as an "open box" deal or part of the "warehouse deals”.

Upon arrival, everything seemed in order; the package appeared to be factory-sealed. But the surprises that awaited me inside. First off, the moment I turned on the camera, it skipped the standard initial setup process, greeting me in French no less. Then, I discovered the camera was already Bluetooth-paired with a stranger's phone. As if that wasn't enough, the rubber seal around the SD card slot was marred with scratches, a clear testament to its previous adventures. And the shutter count was over 2000 – clear signs it wasn't new.

After trying out this camera, I might still buy it from another store. It’s balanced and lightweight. The autofocus is great. It's just that my trust in purchasing certain items from Amazon has been deeply shaken – to the point where I'm questioning if I'll ever take that risk again. Whatever Amazon's strategy here, it's damaging their credibility, at least in my eyes.

I saw a review stating that someone received a used camera but thought it was probably a one off case considering the rest of the reviews, so I ordered anyways. I went to open the box and it seemed like it wasn’t a brand new product (no film on screens, cord not tied up etc). There is a scratch on the top. When I turned it on settings had already been changed. I checked the shutter count and over 700 photos have been taken and the Bluetooth had someone else’s phone paired. Really not impressed after spending $3000 on a camera and receiving a previously used product.

5.0 out of 5 stars AI is the real deal!

The Sony a7Cm2 advanced imaging system is powered by a 33MP full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor and the BIONZ XR processor, a combination capable of 10-bit 4K imagery at up to 30 fps or a top continuous shooting rate of 10 fps with AF and AE using either the mechanical or electronic shutter. The new focus system powered by an artificial intelligence (AI) chip is a huge improvement over my Sony a7m4. It locks on and sticks like glue. Not sure how to algorithm works but boy are my photos sharp and the focus has improved in some of my non Sony lenses.

The camera boasts impressive specifications in a compact full-frame body. It provides excellent image and video quality, and its autofocus system is one of the best available. The autofocus performance is top-notch. However, my two main observations are that the battery life is significantly worse than the a7iii, and the photos appear better before capturing than the final results. Nonetheless, it remains a worthwhile purchase. If opting for a larger lens, consider a grip for better weight distribution, or stick to smaller lenses. An inconvenience is that the articulating screen doesn't extend out flush with the camera's side, a consistent issue with the a7c/cii models.
