Small, light, bright: a great normal prime
A large-aperture 50 mm prime lens is a must-have for serious full-frame camera users, and this is an excellent, affordable choice. The optical design is state-of-the-art for high image quality, and the large F1.8 maximum aperture can produce gorgeous background bokeh. On APS-C format E-mount bodies it provides equally high quality with an equivalent focal length of about 75 mm.

This is my first G Master lens, and I am definitely impressed. It's fast to focus, which is excellent, because I intended to use it mainly for sports photography in medium-low light. However, it is also perfect for portraits, and pet photography. With such amazing boke, it does bring out the subject and it makes it super easy to take amazing shots.

Let’s get this out of the way first; this lens may be a Sony G lens, but it’s a G Master lens for all intents and purposes. The build, features, linear XD AF and optical quality are basically the same as my 35mm GM. The one reason it’s likely sold as “just” a G is the 1.8 aperture (as opposed to 1.4).
This lens on my Sony A1 is absolutely brilliant. I have the Sigma 20mm 1.4 Art, which is also an amazing lens, but it’s just way too big and heavy. The Sony 20mm 1.8 G is under half the weight of the Sigma, which is an easy trade for that 2/3-stop difference. In fact, after some tests I’ve discovered that the actual transmission difference is only about a half-stop between the two.
Even though they’re both 20mm, the Sony G is noticeably wider than the Sigma. The Sony also exhibits a bit of focus breathing whereas the Sigma doesn’t.
Both are super sharp lenses, but the Sony G is noticeably sharper when pixel peeping. The Sony also focuses quicker and more confidently, as well as having a much closer minimum focus distance. Often when using the Sigma with a flash to cover dancing at the end of a wedding reception, I would have to stop the lens down to around f/2.8 otherwise most shots would slightly miss focus. With the Sony G I can shoot wide open in this scenario and it almost always nails focus, tack-sharp.
If you’re looking for a 20mm for Sony FE then this is the lens to get.

This lens replaces my 70-300 f/4.5-5.6. It's wonderful to carry around, and is compatible with the Sony 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. The constant f/2.8 aperture is awesome, and the internal zoom is just as awesome. I'm not a fan of telescopic zooms personally.
I also like the round lens hood (as opposed to the pedal design on the original 70-200). I never understood why the pedal design was needed for anything longer than 35mm. This is a great walk around lens for street portrait, like at a parade for example.
I used to really dislike white lens body with the black focus and zoom rings, but have since come to like them. I suppose it can be a drawback, as it SHOUTS "Pro gear" when you may want to blend in more, but at the same time, the white reflects the heat better and with longer focal lengths, the distortion is less affected.
Over all, this is a top notch lens. Highly recommend for anyone who prefers the longer focal length zoom range over the wide angles.

The auto focus is sluggish and noisy, but for the price one can't really complain. The OSS works well. I got great photos out of it.

Fantastic medium range lens
Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2024Style: w/ 24-70mm F2.8 lensConfiguration: Lens bundleVerified Purchase
Sony's GM2 series of lenses are pretty spectacular and this one is well worth the cost. With a focal range of 24-70mm it's an excellent lens for medium range shooting. The auto focus is super fast and images are sharp and clear. Bokeh is smooth and wide ranging as depth of field is adjusted with f-stop. This lens is equally adept shooting still photagraphy and video. This lens is very well built and with proper care will hold it's value for many many years. I highly recommend it.

Great all around everyday lens
Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2024Style: w/ 24-105mm Standard-Zoom Fixed Zoom LensConfiguration: Lens bundleVerified Purchase
I use this lens a lot on a7iii, it's one of my favorite esp. for short trips and hikes, yielding outstanding image quality in many situations, except very dark scenes where you may need f1.8 or brighter aperture. The zoom range is perfect for my type of photography - I rarely want to shoot wider than 24mm, and the long end of the zoom range can get you good not too distant wildlife shots with good background separation. Works well for street photography (although, most primes are smaller and lighter) and portraits. For most sports, you'll need longer reach and better auto-focusing though.

The updated Sony 16-35 GM brings welcomed upgrades. Size, weight, aperture ring, photo quality and added features.
The size and weight are reduced making it more attractive for travel and video. It takes up less space in your bag and less weight making it a preferred choice for those that use this less a lot.
The aperture ring is great if you are used to the other Sony lenses with it. Send more natural for those that have taken photos on a more manual camera.
Photo quality overall is improved over version 1 and you will see the improvement in the corners and overall sharpness.
One great feature is you can get closer to focus on your subject as close to 8.7 inches vs 11 on version 1.
The Sony 16-35 II is a great upgrade if you use for video and need a lighter/smaller lens or you use the lens a lot and want to benefit from the smaller size and weight. Increased image quality is a bonus since the 16-35 already had good image quality.
