This new pair has way fewer issues, I wonder if they upgraded them slightly.
Last complaint is the ear gels need to be smaller. I replace the default ones with the ear gels from the old wired Smokin’ Buds 2 earbuds.
My biggest complaint unrelated to the quality is the ambient noise function - be careful when you turn it on because it announces on full volume that it has turned on (even when your volume is turned all the way down, it will hurt your ears and startle you so be careful!) The fit of the different sized tips also needs a lot of fine tuning, the tips themselves fit my ears very well but they do not fit the earbud itself, causing the earbud to slide out of the tip during use.
I just needed a basic pair for light use but at this point I will be switching to AirPods, although they are much more expensive at least they are reliable and functional.
- the fit: they are amazing at staying in your ear. i have small ear canals and perhaps strangely shaped ears so i often have issues with earbuds staying in my ear doing mundane activities, close to impossible if i’m jogging or something. these stay in no matter how hard i shake and i’m pretty sure it’s because of that awesome hook they have.
- the aesthetic: they look pretty cute and i love the mint colour.
- ambient mode: really awesome as i wear headphones when shopping and now i don’t have to be awkward with clerks when they talk to me because i can hear them (but this mode could be improved upon, they didn’t nail it but i’m happy to have it)
battery life: the battery is damn well going to last as long as they say it does
what i dislike:
- the touch functions: they are INCREDIBLY UNRESPONSIVE. they flat out suck. half the time it doesn’t register taps which means it’s constantly doing nothing or increasing/decreasing volume instead of changing modes or performing the action i was actually hoping to perform. this makes using them soooo tedious. you have to tap at the perfect time interval to the millisecond. and then pray for good luck.
- connectivity: the connectivity is a little shotty. they disconnect sometimes. it’s not so bad if you have one device, but changing between devices is a 10-15 minute job because they refuse to connect. so basically, forget changing between phone and laptop without ongoing a massive headache. and they disconnect from my laptop a lot more often than my phone, not sure why? both are new devices from 2020 with new generation bluetooth capabilities.
the case: the case has trouble closing properly when the headphones are in it. you don’t get that satisfying “clack” and it feels like when you’re trying to shove your freezer closed when it’s too full and you force it shut.
- sound quality: i am by no means an audiophile or picky with audio. i purchased these downright knowing they are not the best in sound and have owned skull candy headphones before. i knew what to expect but even so, i was underwhelmed. movie mode definitely is worth changing to (if you can, i had to tap incessantly until i got it to register). they are definitely better for podcasts or movies as audio tends to get a little lost and muddy when it’s music.
conclusion: i bought these because my airpods broke (that i got for free) and didn’t feel like the air pods had been worth their price point so i opted for non-apple products. well, now i definitely feel the airpods are worth the price. at least for the price of these skullcandies, you can definitely get a better bang for your buck. if what you care about is something with long battery and a comfortable secure fit (which i thought that’s all i wanted) then these are for you. but after experiencing them i realize i need a little more out of my headphones and i realize that interface actually plays a big role in my use. the dealbreaker for me on these skull candies is how impossible they are to use as every command is a series of taps and the device thinks you did 2 taps when you did 3 etc and i think they would benefit from actual buttons at this point and maybe an app to change modes. instead of “tap once slow tap twice fast” and it thinks i tapped once ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I wore these daily, outside in harsh conditions, to mostly take phone calls or listen to music. While standing next to my rig while it's running, on a jobsite with other heavy equipment working I can still have a phone call and been heard clearly.
My only disappointment is that I lost them, and that's my own fault.

My only criticisms is that sometimes the headphones will continue to play music in the case (you just got to wait for the light to turn red before shutting the lid). No biggie. The other thing is that if you're looking for noise cancellation for sleeping and no music playing, might want to look for something else more specific to that. They cannot block snoring from your partner, but are good for smaller noise like vents, fans or LED buzzing.
