Product description

Amazon.ca Product Description

The Sekonic L-208 TWINMATE is a palm-sized analog light meter for hand-held incident and reflected ambient light readings. Small and light, the L-208 TWINMATE can also be mounted onto your camera or bracket - using the included hot-shoe adapter for quick, camera-positioned reference readings as you work. Though designed primarily for entry-level users, long-time shooters look to the Sekonic L-208 TWINMATE as an accurate, easy-to-stow, back-up meter. Owners of rangefinder cameras who desire and incident and reflected meter also appreciate the included shoe mount. A sliding lumisphere enables accurate incident readings. Retract the lumisphere, and you can now take reflective readings. The silicon photo diode receives light at an angle of 33-degrees , which is slightly narrower than the angle-of-view of a normal lens. A hold-and-read function maintains the reading for 15 seconds after releasing the measurement button to allow you time to evaluate your settings. A single, long-lasting CR2032 lithium battery powers the show.

I wanted a light meter that would give quick incident light readings for use with my digital camera. (For reflective light readings, I use the meter built into in the camera.)

To take a reading, you press the button to activate the meter. When you release it, the meter needle stays in place for some time, and you adjust the green needle to match the red meter needle. The scale then shows a full range of possible speed and f-number combinations.

The advantage over a digital meter is that the scale is always visible. If I want to try a different aperture or shutter speed, the settings are already on the dial. On the other hand, a digital meter only shows results for a single f-number or shutter speed, so any change means a new reading. (I already own a Sekonic L-478 and using it usually takes a few seconds, because it sleeps to save power has to boot up each time.)

I considered this meter and the "old school" L-398A. This one uses a 2032 button cell (NOT INCLUDED!), while the L-398 is powered by the light it reads. I went for this one because the operation is slightly easier – you just match a needle. On the L-398A, you must read the meter to get the foot-candles reading, then set the dial to the corresponding number – not difficult, but slightly more mental effort than just matching a needle. The battery is only used to take a reading, so I would expect it to last a long time, and this seems to be the experience of other reviewers.

The "lumidome" on this meter is tiny – just a piece of plastic that slides over a hole on the front. It seems accurate, and gives the same readings as my much-larger digital meter.

Pocket size, useable with one hand, easy to use and reliable. The ideal companion to my Leica M’s.
Of course they appear over-priced, but what choice do you have? - they provide a great solution with few, if any, peers.

Made of the cheapest plastic possible. Feels like a kids toy. No battery included although the Amazon post says it is. I would not recommend it.

Note that it doesn't come with a battery - order it at the same time, and save the frustration I went through.

I got this to replace a digital meter that was too temperamental in cold weather, this worked fine on a recent cold day, exposures were good. Its a bit small just need to get used to that.

Purchased this because I needed a compact, reliable, and lightweight meter when I go shoot with my Hasselblad 500CM with a Phaseone P25 back with an eye-level prism.... a very very very heavy setup! Prior to this, was using an iPhone app for metering but I needed something lighter and easier to operate. The Sekonic Twin Mate is the solution.

I also tried a few mini hot shoe mount meters like Reveni Labs, TTArtisan, Keks to name a few, which are all good choices, but I still prefer the traditional wear-around-the-neck handheld match-needle meters. Most of all, it is a Sekonic! The Twin Mate also comes with an additional hotshoe mount adapter, but I am content wear it around my neck or in my pocket.

Meter has a lumisphere cover- incident mode mostly for portrait and macro, or reflective mode I always use. Rotate dial to set film speed, point lumisphere at the subject to get a reading which activates the "green" needle, then rotate dial to match red needle over green to get your correct f-stop and shutter speed. It has an EV reading if your "older" camera uses EV system for exposure.

Love it! Highly recommend it!

I had a bad experience on a camera-held lightmeter - it was working well, but I couldn't read the display due to I have to wear glasses - so I gave a chance to the Sekonic L-208 Twinmate - and it worked ! The analog needle is the secret - the exposure reading memory is the the trick ! The negative side ? It's plastic and I don't like plastic otherwise 100% approved!
