Just back to say drive is still running fine, no problems, after two years. If it blows up today I feel I've had my money's worth. Unquesionably has extended the life of this iMac. Hoping for another year out of this set up.
I was getting very slow boot times at one point (~10 min) I tried a few things and finally just nuked the drive and reinstalled Monterey, after that it was running as usual again (~2 min boot times). I'm not sure what caused that, possibly some system extension.
--- [ Original review follows ]---
I purchased this SSD to use as an external boot drive on my 2017 iMac with fusion drive. Performance of the fusion drive is highly variable which generally leads to laggy and occasionally very slow (actually terrible) performance. Physically opening this generation imac is undesirable so an external drive, if fast enough, is a preferable solution (for me).
I am using this drive as an external boot drive and the computer is *much* faster in every situation which I have used it. My photos library opens quickly and I can scroll through thousands of photos quickly. games like Civ VI and Bioshock open and are playable quickly. (previously I could start Civ and go and make coffee.) linux VMs are reasonably fast despite only having 8 gig RAM to split between host and VMs. I almost never see a "stall" in day-to-day web surfing and typical use.
I booted to the recovery system, formatted the drive apfs, created an apfs volume, then installed Catalina and restored from Time Machine. Everything worked as expected and the drive was bootable. There's probably similar ways to get the same result with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper etc.
In my experience the drive has remained cool to the touch, only becoming slightly warm in operations involving moving a few hundred gig. I have it sitting on the bottom of the aluminum "foot" on the iMac which I suspect provides some heat dissipation. I have had no problems after a couple of weeks of use. I may ziptie it to the back of the "foot" at a later date to get it out of sight.
I'm using the USB type-C connector, but I tested the drive and it also works (more slowly) connected to USB A-type.
My only concern is longevity of the drive. I hope I get at least a couple of years out of it, at which time I expect I can buy a fast Terabyte drive for a similar price.
I'm not super happy with this iMac (that's another story), but this drive has probably added years to its viable life. It's already paid for itself in not having to sit around and look at beach balls.
Packaging was neat and tidy if not somewhat bulky for this device - I suspect that for loss prevention in retail environment.
The T7 came in a nicely sealed box. I was quite surprised that the product was manufactured in South Korea.
The box includes 2 USB cables, one manual, and the T7 device.
It comes with 1 USB-C to USB-C cable, capable of delivering up to 10Gbps, and a USB-C to USB 3 cable.
Both cables are about 40 cm long and the construction is very well built. I have no doubt they will last many years unless I exert some great physical abuse. Both cables fit very snuggly in the T7 body. Even if you are the type of person who likes to hang the SSD in the mid-air, I am certain that the device won't fall off unless you intentionally pull it off.
The device is very light. According to Samsung, T7 only weight 58 grams. It is a size of a credit card and about the same thickness of an iPhone 8. The SSD is enclosed in a solid metal body. I believe the metal body was used to dissipate heat faster to reduce throttling caused by heat.
The main reason why I purchased T7 without the fingerprint sensor is because of the price difference for technology that I will not be using. In order to use the fingerprint sensor, you need to encrypt the device using Samsung's application. The Samsung application will do the hardware encryption, which was notoriously known for its vulnerability to attackers. I am sure that Samsung fixed this bypass but I will stick to the more secure APFS encryption.
I had some trouble installing the Samsung application on my Mac. When I launched the application, the software was not able to recognize my SSD. After many troubleshooting, I found out the Samsung SSD had to be formatted in APFS (non-encrypted) file system in order to be recognized. After formatting, I was able to do the hardware encryption with the application.
The performance of the device was solid. When hardware encrypted, it had no performance hit compared to having no encryption. However, after using the device for 30 minutes, I have noticed some degradation in performance due to throttling caused by heat. On average, it was hitting 890MB write and 900MB read speed. With some throttling, this number went down to 850MB wite but still respectable 900MB read speed.
With Apple's APFS Encryption, the performance had about 20 to 23 percent hit.
Compared to my SanDisk Extreme SSD, the device is slightly cooler to touch. Form factors are about same, where SanDisk is slightly longer but narrower compared to Samsung T7.
Overall, given the robust construction, solid performance, and small form factor, I am giving it 5 stars.

Performance: Excellent. It gets the advertised speeds and I don't notice any slowdown when using it compared to my internal SSD.
Form factor: WAY smaller and lighter than I expected, in a good way. Its profile is scarcely larger than a credit card, and it's slightly thinner than a Bic pen. It's just big and sturdy enough that you won't easily lose it, but small and discrete enough to slip into a bag or sleeve easily.
Encryption: I think that any mobile hardware with personal data on it should be encrypted. I was planning to encrypt the drive using third-party tools, but realized after buying that it has its own encryption hardware built in. The official app for decrypting the drive is super easy to use, and since it's all handled on the SSD itself, there's no extra overhead and minimal performance impact.
If you're looking for an SSD that will see moderate daily use, this is easily the one to get.
