This is to replace an earlier model of same Stanley plane that fell onto concrete breaking the cast adjusting mechanism. This model is much weightier and although I am a hobby wood worker it seems to be of tradesman quality.

Good value for the price. Like most planes, it needs some work. Flatten the sole, sharpen the blade and work on adjusting the blade for desire shavings. This low angle block plane has all the features needed to adjust to do excellent smooth shaving, especially cross-grain.

This plane is fantastic for the cost. I purchased this when I was just starting to get into woodworking and I have used it during the creation of practically every single project I have worked on since. Yes, it's true that you could get a much better quality plane from lee valley or lie nielson, but you be paying considerably more for it. The adjustable mouth feature works quite well and I've been able to take some beautiful fine finishing cuts with it as well. I should mention that I spent a bit of time with some sandpaper and a flat plate flattening the bottom of the plane. It came fairly flat, but it needed a bit of a tune up. Also, a bit of oil on the depth adjustment really made the adjustment knob turn easily and smoothly. I would recommend this plane to someone starting out in woodworking or who has a limited budget. It will work very well for you. Just keep the blade sharp.

The item I received was obviously a previously returned item. The packaging was opened and barely held the item. When I buy new, I expect new and I never buy returned items unless they are discounted.

The quality of this plane is not as good as vintage Stanley model #9-1/2.
It did not have a flat sole, and had a huge drop just before the mouth. this was very bad.
The throat plate did not move parallel with the sole and did not close completely, because the guide was not straight at all.
I corrected everything but it took almost half a day...
Please aware that it requires a lot of tune ups before starting to use, otherwise it is simply a junk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantasic block plane, especially for the price

Love this plane. Like any plane ever, expect to spend some time flattening the sole with progressively finer grits of sandpaper (I start at 60 and work my way down to about 600 usually for the sole). Wouldn't hurt to do the same for the sides and make sure everything is perfectly square, especially if you want to use this on a shooting board. I didn't do the sides (yet), but it only took me a couple of hours to take this plane from out-of-box to dialed-in and ready to use.

I had to flatten and hone the blade as well; used the scary sharp method.

Adjustments are pretty easy to make, and once I got things dialed in, this is my favorite plane that I own. Cuts paper thin slices of even rather dense, hard woods with somewhat figured grain (I had success with some rather twisty Osage Orange), and straight grained, softer woods don't stand a chance. Fits comfortably in my admittedly somewhat large hands. Mouth can be adjusted for opening width.

Highly recommend this plane, especially for a budget. Don't listen to people who say you have to get really expensive planes to make great cuts and get an awesome surface. This one can do it. If you're not achieving the results you want, it's probably because you need to practice.

4.0 out of 5 stars as many have noted - you *have* to hone the crap out of this

So, as many have noted - you *have* to hone the crap out of this.

Use the scary sharp method if you can. Buy a cheap pane of glass for a smooth surface. I used:

80 grit, 220 grit, 400 grit, 800 grit, 1500 and 2000 grit. The last two were automotive 'body' sandpaper.

You need to hone the sole, the blade, use a file to clean up the edges as much as possible, so on and so forth. I got a honing tool to make sure the blade was done properly.

Once sharpened, it works pretty damn well (tm). It probably needs to be a bit sharper, but I've been able to use it to get good, clean shavings so far. Good purchase, and has the adjustments that make it pretty useful.

Allocate 1-4 hours just to clean it up.
