Good Value and Functionality
An OBD II (On Board Diagnostics) is an essential tool for any do-it-yourself mechanics or even someone who wants to engage with a repair shop and have a bit more knowledge before they go in to have a check engine light diagnosis. The OBD II standard has been around for North American vehicles since the mid-1990s.I’ve got a 2017 Toyota RAV4 hybrid, and the unit works fine on my vehicle. It does indicate that it won’t work on “new energy or hybrid vehicles” but again I had no issues.The reader is packaged as a single unit – i.e. the reader and the data link connector cord are permanently attached to one another. The cord is a bit short for my liking, but I could still put it on my lap when plugged into the OBD II port. The package includes a decent instruction manual that takes you through all the capabilities.The screen and navigation for this unit reflect its price point – very basic monochrome display and simple user interface that requires a fair bit of moving up and down to select the correct function. There are much more sophisticated units with nicer interfaces, but it is hard to go wrong at this price. The unit’s capabilities are actually quite impressive.Besides reading and clearing basic OBD II error codes, the unit has a look-up function to give a brief description of the code (and you can always search on the Internet for much more information). As well it has a real-time data stream functionality that lets you see various aspects of your engine’s performance in real-time such as RPM, load, speed, spark advance, etc. There are 19 pages of information with 4 different readings on each page though of course not all are applicable to each vehicle. As well for some of the data you can view it on a simple chart that updates in real-time. See the short video clip with this review where I increased the car’s RPM while sitting in my driveway.There’s one section that shows you the real-time vehicle’s battery level which is great if you don’t have a voltmeter. Finally, there is a small setup section that allows you to set the language, units (imperial or metric) and screen contrast.I don’t currently have any active codes in my engine but there is also a “freeze frame” feature that will show data that was collected when a problem occurred. For owners who live where there are emission inspections the I/M Readiness (Inspection & Maintenance) feature will come in handy.You can also read some static information about the vehicle such as the VIN.The unit comes with a one-year warranty.
