This is a review for the Ring WIRED doorbell Plus. (Not the battery / wifi version that everyone installs and then complains about under the wrong product.) Yeah it’s $199, but it’s backed by Amazon. Yes you need a subscription to be able to save you video. It’s $5 for the basic subscription. Your sorry butt spends more than that at Tim’s and Starbucks on a monthly basis. You’ll be fine, cupcake. The first 30 days are free. I bought this after Telus home security ticked me off and no showed for their appointment…again. Here’s what you can expect: If you have an existing MECHANICAL doorbell built into your house (yes… the weird box up on the wall that makes the ding-dong noise) then this will work with your doorbell. As far as voltage, unless your house was built in the late 80’s or early 90’s you might need a new transformer. They’re like $20. Installing the doorbell power supply took me literally 3 mins. 2 mins of that was trying to find my screwdriver. You open the doorbell chime box, and insert the connectors. It has some adhesive tape to attach the tiny little supply battery to the inside of the mechanical box. I did not even disconnect the power. Next, I removed the POS skybell doorbell Telus left behind. Yes, this doorbell DOES come with a mounting bracket AND a wedge bracket, so don’t waste your money buying them… you’ll need that money for Tim’s or Starbucks. I didn’t use the measuring template that came with this, because I have eyes and opposable thumbs, and was able to simply put the wedge bracket on the outside of the door frame and screw it in by HAND. One thing to note is these screws are crap. Minus one star for sending this garbage along and passing it off as “hardware”. Come on Amazon… One of the heads snapped off, so don’t over tighten them. If you want to be a carpenter and drill pilot holes before-hand, be my guest and waste your time. This isn’t rocket science. Once mounted the wires were connected to the 2 nodes on the back of the Ring doorbell. No, it doesn’t matter which wire connect to which node. Pick one and move on with your life. Hopefully you remembered. to read the instructions and pop the face plate off of the doorbell before installing. One installed, put the face plate back on… it’ll snap into place. Insert the safety screw underneath and then push the button on the Ring doorbell. Whip out your phone, open the Ring app and install the doorbell. You can mess around with the settings afterwards like motion detection, etc. Don’t like the silver face plate? DO NOT buy a new face plate right away. You’ll get an email from Ring after you register your doorbell, and included is a code for a free face plate. There’s a dozen different colours to pick from. The link in the email will send you to Ring’s website… not Amazon. When you order it, and it shows there’s a cost and a shipping fee… that tells me you didn’t actually read the email and enter the complimentary code they asked you to input at checkout. So don’t come back here and cry when you realize you didn’t follow instructions. I opted for the black face plate. Pick whatever god awful colour your wife wants you to pick. It took about 6 days to show up. As far as the use of the actual doorbell, it’s miles ahead of what I was using from skybell / Telus. The doorbell does what it needs to do. Don’t expect a super clear movie theatre experience when you’re using the app. It’s a doorbell… It’s a clear picture and you can see the person’s face just fine. I’m not sure what more you’re expecting. App has a clean interface and is easy to use. I haven’t had any issues with wifi or load times. If you are experiencing lag, it’s probably not your doorbell. It’s probably that dial up connection you’re using that you’re too cheap to upgrade in 2024. Or, your’e using the wireless doorbell, in which case- that’s on you. If this doorbell ends up sucking over time, I will come back here and update accordingly. Don’t hold your breath.
