It’s discreet and hold a ton of audio files. I have left it running during my conferences and it has never not picked something up, including my colleagues scuffling!
The little kit comes with all the various bits you need to fully utilize the device, except for a power source for charging. It will have to be plugged into your computer or a power plug you already have for that. The main unit is only a bit larger than two sticks of gum stacked together, and has only a micro power switch, a tiny status light, a charging/data port, and a "reset" pinhole. The other items included are:
1) A shortish power/data transfer cord with a USB-A plug on the power source end, and a USB-C plug on the recorder end.
2) A small adapter plug to change the USB-A to C on the cord, if that is what your power source has.
3) A four button "control panel" that can plug into the recorder's USB socket, and has a phono jack on the other end for earbuds. You can play and listen to recordings without a computer.
4) A set of earbuds to plug into the phono jack, if desired.
5) A lanyard that loops into the corner of the recorder.
6) The operating manual.
Read the manual, and do the basic setup of desired parameters. This mainly includes date/time, and a few recording settings. The instruction manual has suggested settings. These can be set by plugging the device into your computer and opening the "[2159-RECSET] file. I took a screenshot of this file in its initial state, in case I messed up and had to restore it to its original state. Resetting the device may do this, but I didn't want to take a chance. There are a few other files present, including the one that holds recordings, and one with PDFs of the instruction manual...a good thing to download to your computer. Recording files can be played on your computer (or cell phone or tablet, if that's the device you choose to use).
The recorder is an MP3 player. If you want to, you can load it with music, and use it for playing/listening.
The tiny concealable size of the recorder really calls for its main function to be recording conversations and other live sounds, maybe surreptitiously. It's ideal to keep with you in the car or in a pocket to keep a record of an important conversation, a traffic stop, an agreement or a dispute, or other such events. Operation is simple...you flip the tiny microswitch on top with a fingernail, the tiny, almost invisible, status light comes on, and you're recording. This is where you may need to do some experimenting with the recording level setting. Setting it too high can cause it to pick up too many small sounds, like rustling cloth or paper, that interfere with the quality of the main audio.
Once you sort through things, it's simpler than it might sound at first. It's not suitable for a young child to use, but a teen or older should be able to handle it.
