Product Description
Simple, Intuitive, No Buttons Operation
Say goodbye to the days with slow flatbed scanning! With Plustek ePhoto Z300, scanning photos and other memorabilia has never been easier.
Think about it – it usually takes 1 to 2 minutes to scan a single photo on a flatbed scanner, but now a 4x6 photo just needs 2 sec to be scanned and stored, which means you can scan 3,000 photos in just one afternoon.
ePhoto Z300 is a scanner specifically designed for scanning photos. Technically speaking, Z300 uses a special soft roller to protect old photos that have not been touched for too long. It also has installed a high-quality CCD sensor inside. The CCD sensor has the highest degree of reproduction for color images. Z300 also features an optical detection and does not require complex button operations. With Z300, scanning a 4x6 photo only takes up to 2 seconds. You only need to put the photos one by one into the paper clip, and the Z300 will automatically detect and scan.
Special soft roller
If your photos are not exactly in the perfect condition, the surface can be easily peeled off or stuck. Pros:
- Price: Got mine for $250. Price seems to have gone up, not sure why.
- Easy to use: Directions are clear, quick installation, software is straightforward.
- Fast: Takes only a couple seconds per photo (300 dpi). Once you have a good system set up you can fire them through pretty quickly.
- No issues after 2 years of occasional use.
Cons:
- One photo at a time.
- Higher quality scans (600 dpi) takes 7ish seconds per photo to scan.
- Can only scan 30-50ish photos into the software before you need to stop and save them to your computer. Guess this might not be a terrible thing, though.
- Software could have more features. Feels a little lacking.
I'm nitpicking of course. I like this scanner. I would have preferred one that could scan a group of photos all at once, but they were well out of my price range. I can scan around 200 photos per hour once I get a good rhythm going, and that includes making sure the cropping & rotations are correct, saving them to the correct folder after each batch, and getting the new pile ready to go. And the occasional coffee break.
Summary: Worth it for $250.
The software is simple, but a bit too simple. I imagine this is done on purpose so that they're 45+ year old customers can use it without many problems. (It's not hard to guess the demographics for this product... 35MM film, anyone?) The changes I am suggesting will still keep the interface "simple", but give more tech-savvy user the ability to maximum there time. (And will be more ergonomic for our 45+ year old wrists! :)
So, I'll bring your rating to a 5 if I can see some improvements in the software. Here are my suggestions:
On the initial scan window: Please let me a right-click option on each photo, so I may rotate it 90/90/180. Two clicks per image rotation and almost no mouse movement would be awesome. (please don't forget to let this be a multi-select item as well, it would be nice if I could rotate 10 selected images at once.)
UPDATE: I am able to select multiple images at once and rotate them using the button at the top-left. (So, at least I don't have to do it one at a time). Would still like "Right-Click" option.
In the same right-click menu in the option above, please add the short-cut to "...crop in photo editor". 99% of the editing I do is cropping, so why not give us an option to open it, crop, save, close. Period. It's not very ergonomic for the most used editor feature.
Speaking of CROP: After I select the crop ratio, the application needs to remember the value. There is a very good chance that that will be the setting ratio for my next crop.
Please remember, some of us have a 24" screen. That is a LONG DISTANCE between the top-left corner and the lower images, especially the next 10000 times I do it! :)
Add some audio: Warning sound when approaching the 50 picture limit, as I am facing away from my screen, and I don't know the current count. Once I get to 46 or so, a beeping noise, or a voice counting up (46, 47, 48, 49, 50) as it gets close to the limit. (Prevents surprised with scanning stops, and an unnecessary click to close the pop-up window.)
Again, the product works well. I enjoy the manual feeding too; it is easy to use (with a short bit of practice). A side option would be to put the software in GitHub; or to please let me know if you need a software tester.
Spoiler alerts : Photos are extremely dirty even if in an album. Also the sticky stuff on photo album plastic sheets comes off and sticks to back of photo. This causes scanner to give the scanned photo black lines or makes them crooked. This happens all at once so you immediately stop scanning. To fix this I use my glasses lens wipes to clean scanner glass every 200 photos. You will see crud (fingerprint oils, glue, etc) on the wipes from the photos.
Light bulbs lose a tiny bit of output power every scan. So if scanning large amounts of photos be sure to use the enclosed "white paper" to readjust the white light. This adjusts the colors to the new light power value. I did it every 500 photos.
Have now scanned 13,786 photos allowing me to discard 42 large albums from their shelves.
All my kids will now have their own digital family photos.
You can adjust this scanner in manual settings to scan the ordinary photo at 6 megs and a 8"x10" photo at 20 megs.
The scanner automatically makes old photos better, very amazing.
You can tweak each photo to your heart's content with the photo adjustment features.
If photo dark then it lightens it up automatically. Great feature.
At highest resolution takes 15 seconds to scan a photo or 50 every 15 minutes.
At factory setting it takes 2 seconds to scan a photo at around 450 kb.
15 seconds at highest 6 meg resolution.
If I had taken the photos in to a store to copy onto USB it would have cost me over $7,000 cdn.
Ordered it on a Saturday, received it the following Friday.
Awesome service!
Have 40+ large photo albums to scan to make room on shelves.
Photo shows cell phone stopwatch screen : 50 photos scanned in 15 minutes.
I scan 50, then before saving them to files, edit the photos.
Can take a 1970stype 110 photo which scans at the basic setting of 0.6 megs and by resetting the scanner, have it scanned and saved at up to 6 megs. And the new photo is better than the original.
Other attached photos show the options for editing the photos. Lots to choose from.
If you put a photo in crooked a bit the program realigned it for you automatically.
In our photo albums we include little pieces of paper that describes the photos, sometimes funny.
And guess what..
The scanner can take the little pieces of paper too that they show up in your files so you can keep everything.
I was looking for a scanner that I could afford and found this one.
Scanning photos going back to 1950s.
We have been putting off this project for years because our current scanner is the type that you open the top lid, put in photo, close lid, scan it, open lid, continue. No thanks.
Attached video shows photo scan at highest resolution which is 15 seconds at 600 dpi but an override setting make sit even better, a high resolution scan of come out at 5-6 megs.
Basic resolution scans in 2 seconds at 300 dpi.
Would I buy it again.... Yes.

The images drop into Plustec's software, and you have the ability to do some editing and color adjustment. I've found that this software works well for me, is easy to use, and is all I need. I just want to get all these photos scanned in and organized and I'm not terribly interested in any serious editing at this point. I'm especially happy with the color enhancement that's available for those old color photos from decades past that are fading or turning yellow - it really gives those photos new life, just by clicking on a button or two. I have other photo editing software on my laptop, and I'll worry about serious editing later, if I even decide to go that far. After I've made any quick color adjustments, I just move the photos onto my hard drive, where I can organize them., and save them on an external hard drive.
The Plustek scanner does a great job and has a very attractive price tag. The user manual is detailed and very helpful. I've heard good things about the customer service, but I haven't needed to use it. There's also a case available for it here on Amazon, and I keep it in the case on my desk to eliminate dust. The scanner doesn't take up much room on the desk, so I keep it there to work on my scanning project when I have a little extra time. I recommend this scanner for anybody who's looking to tackle a photo archiving project without breaking the bank.
