Training Your Pet to Use a Ramp

Step 1

Place the ramp flat on the ground to allow your pet to inspect the ramp. Lead your pet across using treats and praise. Give treats frequently to encourage your pet. Remember that this is a new experience for your pet, so patience is key!

Step 2

Once your pet is comfortable with the ramp, move your training session to the vehicle or location that will be used.

Step 3

Using treats and praise frequently, guide your pet up and down the ramp until they are happy and comfortable walking on their own.

Step 4

When your pet is walking up and down the ramp independently, treats are no longer needed unless desired. Pack up your ramp and hit the road!

We just opened this box, which had a big hole punched in it, by the way. Although the product appears to be in decent condition, it is clearly used as there are muddy dog paw prints up and down the ramp and muddy edges along the side of the ramp. Not impressed. I expect a discount or will return.

Item arrived fast. It's fairly light. It is sturdy. No issues with my 75 lbs dog walking up on it. No wobble when he's on it. I purchased it for my 2017 Hyundai Elantra. Works great. No anchor being used but I don't need it. I rest it on the seat and it holds firm. No tipping at all. I like that it has a higher edge. The sandpaper like grip is great. He's not slipping. He's comfortable using it. I now use it in Mazda CX 5 and works great as well. Unfortunately, at the 3rd use the sandpaper cover was peeling up. But after contacting Amazon about the cover peeling, they replaced it very fast. They sent me the prepaid label. I needed to keep item until new one arrived. There was no issues with that. He's now 92 lbs and new ramp is holding up nicely. Zero issues. I guess it was just bad luck for the first one with the cover. Definitely recommend.

Item is constructed to support a medium sized dog walking up the ramp. Our 90 pound dog used the ramp as a step/jumping point as he went into the SUV and he sprung his weight onto the center of the ramp which resulted in breaking the plastic hinge. This product is nice and light, easy to open and close but is not built for medium sized pets.

My new Kia Soul 2020 was higher than my old car, so my 10 and 12 year old 40 pound Standard Poodles could not get into the back seat on their own. It was awkward for me and for them to lift them in. The back entry is even higher, so I went looking for a sturdy light weight ramp. After lots of research on amazon and elsewhere, I decided that the solvit 62 inch ramp was just the right length for the rise of approximately 24 inches. Folding in the middle and weighing only 10 pounds it is easy for me to use and stow on the back seat floor or in the back hatch area. I agree with those who say that this is not for heavier weight dogs as it bounces a bit even with mine, particularly my more exuberant 10 year old who was quickly bounding up and down it for liver treats. I accustomed them slowly to the ramp laying it out on the living room floor to be sniffed and seen for a day or so. As shown in the video from solvit I then used small bits of dried liver to encourage them to walk on a leash around the ramp, then on top of it while it was still flat on the floor, then onto the sofa which is a fairly low rise and finally to the back seat of the car. I worked with my more daring dog first letting the more cautious older girl watch and see that it wasn't so bad. Then she had her turn when the first was virtually running up and down the ramp for treats. I had to crate my star pupil for a little peace while introducing my dainty older girl to the ramp. She too caught on to it more quickly than I would have thought possible, so we're now back in business for car trips, short and long. I will also be using it to help them up onto the table I use for grooming and may buy another for indoor use as my older pup's hind quarters become more painful. The ramp fits quite well wedged in the back door opening while the other end and sits flat on the garage floor. I will be returning the solvit ramp door adapter as it is not needed for this car. BTW the 5' ramp rising about 24" and overlapping the seat by about 5-6" needs only about 45" of space beside the car, so I am able to use it inside my attached garage. That is a big plus in cold, snowy Manitoba winters.

I adopted my 6 year old terrier 2 months ago. She is a very sweet girl. She had been run over by a car while being walked "on a sidewalk". She now has a metal plate in her left hind leg, and the left front leg and chest has muscle damage. She is a trooper with a limp. So on our first trip to the beach, I led her up the ramp. She wasn't fond of it, but she went up. When I opened the back hatch she just jumped out of the car and looked back at me as if I was crazy. So then yesterday while I was setting the ramp up, she jumped in the car. Ok, so she's used it once, BUT the ramp is really good quality and whether Bella likes it or not, I am keeping it for her...just in case:) She doesn't think she needs it.

Pros:
- great traction.

Cons:
- it has a really steep incline (my dog has to RUN up the ramp, not walk). I would say this should be used for a hatchback car, NOT an SUV. I would love it if they would offer one that has 1-2 extra feet in length in order to allow the incline to not be so difficult for my dog to climb up.

I bought this because my dog hurt his leg and he HATES being picked up, so I needed a way to get him into our Nissan Pathfinder SUV. This ramp would be 100% perfect IF it was longer in order to make the ramp not as steep. We measured out the length of it and thought it would be ok, but we did not know that the bottom and top of the ramp were flat for several inches in order to allow it to sit in the back of the vehicle and to sit on the ground, so that then means the ramp itself has to be much steeper. So for my use, it sucks because my dog can't make it up the steep ramp without using his sore leg at a running speed.

Got this for my giant breed dog and I'm very happy with the product quality! My dog use it with ease and I love that the ramp has a non-slip material so I feel comfortable to have my dog walk in or out of the car. My only small issue is that it's a bit heavy and somewhat uncomfortable to fold, especially if you're trying to put it away while holding your dog on the leash. But other than that I would recommend this to other dog owners!

This ramp truly is great. I love that it's very sturdy, it was a very non-skid surface, it is super easy to fold and unfold, no struggle whatsoever, and this middle-aged woman can pretty easily lift and carry and move this ramp with one hand. My only downside was that I intend to use this item in the relatively small area of our TV room so the dogs can get on top of their crate, and this does take up a larger footprint than I wanted. In a larger home, or a larger room, or just about any other use I can imagine, this is the top-notch option.
