The Pentel GraphGear 1000 mechanical pencil is a superior drafting pencil for architects, draftsmen, artists and enthusiasts. The 4mm tip design makes it ideal for use with rulers and templates. A unique, dual-action retractor advances and retracts the pencil tip to protect lead from breaking. The built-in lead hardness indicator allows you to easily identify your lead type. It comes pre-loaded with Stein HB lead, which never needs sharpening and produces a clear dark line. The finely chiseled metallic grip inlaid with soft, rubber pads makes extended writing and drawing comfortable.
Four different point sizes for varied line weights.

It’s made almost completely from metal, and it’s enjoyable to write with.
The retractable sleeve is extremely convenient because when I’m in a rush I can toss the pencil in my pocket and not worry about it bending.
Another unique thing about this pencil is that the clip has a spring so it’s easy to use.
When writing for a long time it feels top-heavy, but the weight is also positive because it leads to a smoother writing experience.
The eraser is relatively small so I would recommend not using it and instead buy some block erasers (such as the Pentel Hi-Polymers ones which I love).
One piece of advice for using the GraphGear: When you retract the tip, it uses quite a bit of force and I imagine it could possibly damage the pencil over time. I always cover the cap with my index finger so it can be let back slowly and gently.
I’ve purchased 3 and given them as gifts to some of my friends.
If I were to make any changes, I would get rid of the rubber on the grip. I love pencils & pens with just metal knurling, such as the Zebra F-xMD pen.
I also like using the Kurutoga Roulette pencil, because it rotates and has a better grip. However, I prefer the GraphGear 1000 because the metal feels premium and the retractable tip prevents any bending.

The lead sleeve retraction feature is a nice and unexpected to have in a Pentel product. But it really helps when you need to be mobile. My decade long gripe on Pentel P20X series was the lead pipe bending like crazy if it was handled wrong way which happens a lot in a classroom environment. Moreover, I usually preferred 0.3mm version due to my note taking habit.
The rubberized pads on textured metal grip is unexpectedly comfy to grip. It's not as comfortable as the Dr. Grip but at least metal grip does not attract so much dust unlike rubber surface grips.
There is almost nothing to gripe.. A bit heavy? maybe? I do not have problem with such weight since I usually prefer writing with ebonite fountain pens with piston mechanism. So, I'm kind of used to heavy writing apparatus. But if you're not really a fan of heavy writing instruments, it might be problematic. It's not the product's fault, but personal preference as long as the product's weight does not prevent you from even gripping it.
If you're up for comfortable but stable experience and some lead sleeve protection, this is it! I've been using it for mainly note taking and journal keeping: Excelsior to any of my usage scenarios.
So when I asked a couple of like-minded friends what I should pick up next, I was always recommended the Graphgear 1000. "Have you tried the GG1000?" "You should try the GG1000" "You HAVE to try it" blah blah blah over and over again. I never told them, but I ignored their suggestions and tried on a different route.
I simply thought it was overrated but then a sale came.
How could I resist?
I finally took it off of my wishlist and into my cart. I ordered it with a couple of books and simply forgot about it. A couple of days passed and my delivery came in. I was excited to get my books but completely forgot about the Graphgear 1000. I saw the aluminum box and threw my books aside, unboxing the exquisite pencil. Full metal construction and incredibly sturdy, it quickly reminded me of my first love: the Rotring 800. I spent a day writing in whatever I could from journals to my daily schedule. I wrote out sentences as wordy as I possibly could just to keep this wonderful instrument in my hand. I was hooked.
Eventually, the pencil became part of my daily drivers, sitting up there with the Rotring 800, Uni Kurotoga, Pentel Kerry Sharp, and Tombow Zoom 505.
I highly recommend this mechanical pencil. Hugely satisfying and addicting to write with. Had I discovered it first, I would've ignored the other pencils in my collection. Kind of glad I discovered it last.
