The PS4 typically doesn't write a whole lot to the disk once the game is installed, so this is perfectly suited for that much-needed extra space for your digital purchases or even your physical ones. Nothing plays off the disk so you're probably already facing a situation where your internal HDD is full and you're having trouble figuring out what to delete.
Worry no more - there is plenty of space here and more importantly, the disk isn't going to die if you use it as storage expansion for your console. Load times are pretty comparable to whatever internal HDD you've put into the PS4 be it the original one or whatever you swapped into it at some point. Most of the writes are still to your internal HDD with the faster bus so generally this storage is to hold your game installations which can typically be 20GB or more per game. Some games, like Destiny 2 or Gran Turismo Sport take up to 100GB so this is really huge value if you like to have a lot of games at the ready because you like to switch around a lot.
While the disk gets warm, it never gets exceedingly hot and the console is usually streaming data to memory so while it's spinning a lot, it's not really taking a lot of hits. I've loaded about 2TB into it and have had no issues over several months of using it. In rare cases, the data flow can be a bit slow, but games tend to recover quickly after a few short stutters. Most of the time, you don't notice a thing. Load times, of course, aren't improved with this disk and actually sometimes feels a bit slower than if you were using the internal bus, but that's always been a problem with the PS4 regardless. Once your game is loaded, the streaming is usually efficient and you won't have any issues.
Highly recommended and really great for when PSN hits you with those massive digital sales. Really easy to set up, but make sure you're using the right port (literally and figuratively) as there is only one USB 3 port on the PS4 and needs to be used for expansion solutions like this drive. If you have other peripherals, consider a USB hub off the second port to serve your needs.
The reason I bought this was to transport all the files I lost from another external hard drive of mine that unfortunately that got reformatted. Luckily, I was able to retrieve those lost files but, I didn't want to move them back into that same hard drive. So, bought this brand new one. It took a few hours to copy the files back into this hard drive but, I figured thousands of files would take some time.
I wish these hard drives had some sort of warning that all files will be affected/erased when you happen to do something that will cause this. Can you imagine losing thousands of files and not being warned they will be erased?? Happened to me with my old WD external hard drive.. a few hundred bucks later, paid for some lost files retrieval program, got my files back and ended up buying this to move all those files into it. Happened to my sister as well with her hard drive from a while back but, she didn't bother retrieving her files...
As for usability, it works great as a "plug and play", easy, straight out of the box use. Plugged into my computer and can copy/store files right away into it. The size of this is also even smaller than my old hard drive. Still nice and compact.

My only complaint and major disappointment with WD, is that the free "WD Backup" software is no longer supported by WD and hasn't been for a few years. They offer a free version of Acronis, which doesn't work. Installed the Acronis software, created a bootable disk on a USB Flash (thumb) drive, then rebooted the computer from the thumb drive and created a full backup/ disk image to the new WD drive. The software seemed to run perfectly, and said the backup was successfully created. I felt really good that I had a full backup of my 2015 laptop, in case I ever need to replace the mechanical HDD. But it was a false peace of mind.
Only 2 weeks after using the Acronis backup software, my computer was crashing shortly after bootup, which it had never done before. So I thought I would test the new drive and backup. After rebooting with the Acronis USB Boot drive, it asked for the location of the image file. The computer recognized the WD drive with all of the Acronis backup folders. But then the Acronis software said all of the folders were empty and there was No Image found. WTF?! Acronis said it successfully made a full disk copy. But then the software could not find its own image.
DO NOT USE the ACRONIS software.
I was fortunately able to fix the boot/crash problem using other software. But if my hard drive had completely failed, I would not have a usable backup copy to restore to a new drive. I would have been screwed. It would have been better if I never attempting to create a backup. At least I would known that I didn't have a backup copy to rely on, rather than falsely thinking I was protected.
In addition, the "free" software isn't really free. It's only a 30 day free Trial version. So if you make a full backup within 30 days, and later have a critical problem, you will be forced to purchase the full version to perform the restore. The backup file versions are propitiatory, so you can't use another brand of software to do the restore. They've got you! You can make a free backup/copy (if you can even get the software to work properly). But then you have to pay for the software to actually use the Backup in order to Restore. This is akin Ransomware.
I have since purchased other backup/imaging software and made a full (working) backup to my new WD drive. I'm very happy about that.
