Super powered.Z 5 is powered by Nikon’s fast, comprehensive Expeed 6 image processing system. It’s the secret behind the camera’s sensational photo and video quality, autofocus performance, low-light capabilities, distortion control, image clarity, colour reproduction and more. |
The stability you crave.Sharpness starts with stability, and Z 5 has one of the best in-camera image stabilization systems available. Nikkor Z lenses activate 5-axis VR image stabilization—up to five stops of stabilization in up to five directions: yaw, pitch, roll, X and Y. Compatible F-Mount Nikkor lenses—even those without built-in VR—activate 3-axis VR image stabilization. Great for stills, even better for video. |
In the blink of an iris.Freeze time with shutter speeds as fast as 1/8000 of a second—fast enough to capture moments invisible to the naked eye. When shooting with wide aperture settings for shallow depth-of-field and blurred backgrounds, that speed can also be used to control your shot’s brightness. |
Two for the road.Z 5 includes dual UHS-II SD card slots. Use them together for overflow storage, automatic back up or separating file types like RAW and JPEG or stills and videos. |
Fully automatic. Totally manual.
Sometimes you need to just point and shoot. Other times you want to fine tune every little detail. Z 5 is up for either challenge, going from fully automatic to totally manual with the turn of a dial.
Go quiet.
In can’t miss moments—like weddings, speeches or performances—turn on Silent Mode and capture photo after photo without drawing any attention. This is also great for photographing pets and wildlife.
The eyes say it all.
Great portraits put focus on the eyes. Z 5’s powerful Eye-Detection Autofocus quickly finds your subject’s eyes—humans, cats and dogs alike—and puts them in sharp focus. It even follows them as they move behind objects in the frame.

In the end the over xmas pricing on this camera made it extremely tempting. Nikon should just keep it at that price and I think they'll sell like hot cakes and also drive the sale of z lenses too.
Image quality from this sensor is great. You supposedly lose 1/2 to 1 stop in high ISO compared to the Z6 (and similar BSI sensors), but in reality you are likely not wanting to go up that high anyways. Up to 6400 is still quite good and you can go higher too if you can accept the lost of details to noise. What is superior to the BSI sensor based Z6 and Z6ii is pushing the shadows (you can find various demo of that online), which makes this a better camera if shooting in daylight is common for you.
AF maybe slower than others especially in low light. Mind you with a set of 1.8 primes seems focus just fine even when talking about a black car under sodium street light on a dark street. I have read people having trouble under low light but maybe due to using slower lenses.
FPS, 4.5. Nothing to write home about but for non pros how many frames do you honestly need? Fewer frames, less to delete later as well.
Finally, lenses. This is for me a big draw. The Z line up are good quality and decent pricing for f1.8 primes. To me that just makes so much sense. For others who use zooms well they have f2.8s and f4 zooms. And reviews say they are good as well.
PROs:
1. Good face/eye auto focus. If it can see the face/eye, even in low light situations, it'll focus on it. Good for headshots and portraits. It tracks eyes and faces pretty good, even on animals.
2. DUAL CARD SLOTS. Absolute Clutch. Card fails happen. It is a thing. If it has never happened to you, you have not shot enough events.
3. Good Battery Life. With a full battery you can get around 500 shots, but make sure the energy saving option is on. You can use USB C chargers or battery banks to charge the camera as well.
4. High Resolution Viewfinder. The OLED viewfinder looks great. Good colors and resolution.
5. Small and Lightweight. Its not as big as the Z6 or as heavy. It pretty compact for a full frame Nikon.
6. Headphone and Microphone Jack. If you do video, you would not need janky adapters
7. Dust and moisture sealed. Its an important one for outdoors photographers.
8. Image Quality. Excellent Raw image quality with good detail capture, noise performance and dynamic range. Handles highlights and shadows very well. A lot of room to manipulate in post. Beautiful JPEG color with good sharpening. Check all the photos, all are straight out of camera JPEGs. Also, super-fast 1/8000 sec top mechanical shutter speed for fast aperture shooting in bright light.
9. In Body Image Stabilization. I took all these photos with 40 mm F/2 which is not stabilized. The IBIS helps a lot.
10. Full Sensor 1080p Video. It captures 1080/60p and other framerate videos without any crop, good video AF and good video stabilization. Which is great.
CONs:
1. Face/Eye Autofocus. Stops tracking and starts focusing on the background if the subject looks away. It is also lens dependent. Some lenses have hard time focusing in low light.
2. Continuous Shooting. 4.5 fps continuous shooting with AF seems very slow IMO, should have been something like 7/8 at least.
3. Viewfinder Refresh Rate. The viewfinder looks great but when moving/panning seems a little lagy.
4. Not a BSI Sensor. The sensor is not backside illuminated, likely similar performance to D750-generation chip. it can struggle a but in low light dynamic range.
5. Cropped 4K. 4K video has a hefty 1.7x crop, reducing quality and making wide-angle shooting difficult. Lots of rolling shutter in 4K as well.
6. Slow Sensor Readout and No Tracking in E-Shutter. Subject tracking is completely unreliable when using the entirely silent e-shutter mode and rolling shutter is, well, quite noticeable for moving subjects.
Overall, The Z5 is an extremely well-rounded camera for stills photography. In fact, it's easily the the most compelling stills-oriented full-framer for the cash especially if you find in on a good discount deal.

A terrible waste of money and a total scam.
