All the light I need for my home studio
This is a great product from Neewer. It provides all the light I need for my guitarist studio, recording my guitar and making professional-looking videos. It is so bright that I can bounce it off my stucco ceiling and completely illuminate the subject in very diffused indirect light, without having to look directly at it. The provision of as many yellow as white LED's allows me to set the colour for suitably warm skin tones. Now, my previous Neewer 180- LED light is a great fill-in light for areas of the scene that are in shadow or need to be highlighted.A couple of things you should be aware of: Most of the lights I've encountered screw onto a 1/4"-20 screw thread, as you generally find on light or camera tripods and a lot of mounting gear. The Neewer 660-LED Studio Light does not. It's really too heavy for most tripods. Instead it mounts with a heavy-duty steel tube that's a part of the mounting frame. Ir looks to be ~5/8" (16mm) inner diameter and about an inch (25mm) long (see photo). It sits perfectly on a standard boom arm from a microphone stand and has a set screw to secure it in place. As it happens, I had a spare mic stand and it's perfect for the job.Another thing, the light can plug into the wall with a supplied laptop-style AC cable and DC converter brick. That works great. However if you don't have an available outlet or can't reach it with the cord, The light is also equipped with two NP-F550 battery sockets. These rechargeable batteries are commonly used on a lot of cameras and accessories. I already had a pair and a charger. Unfortunately this light drains batteries pretty quick. With the light at ~3/4 power, two fully charged NP-F550s lasted about an hour, which is not quite enough for most of the things I do. I quickly bought two NP-F970 batteries which mount in the same sockets, but have 3 times the capacity of the F550's. Possibly more, I haven't managed to drain them. There's some intermediate sizes as well, but I just got the F970s and won't have to worry about what battery goes where. Also, they use the same charger as the F550. I recommend you get two chargers (they're pretty cheap), because it can take the better part of a day to charge one NP-F970. Unfortunately, the Neewer light doesn't charge the batteries from it's AC power source, so you have to take them out and plug them into chargers.

That said, it does have some tiny flaws (none of which are deal breakers) that I want to address first:
- The LED's came with some kind of residue caked on them, I assume from manufacturing. I am unsure if it affected the lights brightness, but the residue cast speckled shadows on the diffuser and made it very noticeable. Was very tedious to get off, as it didn't come off easily and each bulb had to be wiped rather firmly with a microfiber cloth.
- The U-Bracket is not entirely symmetrical, and one side appears slightly bent.
- The power block (as others have mentioned) is too high up on the cord, so it dangles from the light when put on a stand. It doesn't feel like it will topple any respectable light stand, but it does seem like a moderate hazard. I think the entire cord needs to be a tad longer.
All things considered, this light has no business being this good for $100. The pros I noticed right off the bat:
- The thing is incredibly bright for its size, and is painful to look at with both the yellow and white LED's at 100%. It's probably 20% brighter with the diffuser off.
- Feels much more durable than I expected with the almost entirely aluminum body and fixture. With many other studio lights, a single trip on a cord means shattered bulbs, but I think this little guy would have a decent chance at surviving a tumble.
- The temperature adjustment works great. Nothing else to really say here.
- Portability! Way more compact than studio lights with bulbs!
- Having the option to run this dude on batteries is great, but you'll be dropping $50 for the two batteries it requires and a charger.
- Pivoting U-bracket is great. Opens up options to light subjects from above or below.
If you're looking for a cheap, adjustable light that doesn't suck – stop here. This is the one. It's not bright enough to bathe an entire studio in light, but I wouldn't expect that for any light this size. It works wonderfully for a fill light or backlight, and would work decently enough for a primary key light if portability is a priority for you, though it won't be as soft or bright as something brighter with a large diffuser.
