While it's clearly made for something bigger than my 350mm, it absolutely does work with smaller lenses, just with a lot of material left over. This really isn't a disadvantage if you're concerned about rain, since you can easily pull it well past the front of the lens and have the camera totally protected if you get a sudden downpour. It does make things more bulky, but for wildlife photography, I try to settle into a small area and minimize movement anyway.
I would recommend using it with a lens hood to help keep the objective end clear. You might even consider some nonslip tape or similar around the edge of the hood to help keep the cover in place if you're using it handheld, as moving around in woods or brush does tend to shift it from time to time.
