Product description

Sonata, Medela's NEW double-electric breast pump with 2-Phase Expression Technology, is our smart breast pump designed with you and your baby in mind. Created to enhance your breast milk feeding experience, Sonata delivers: - Smart Solution connects Sonata to our MyMedela app, your breast milk feeding resource for an instant connection to your personalized pumping dashboard. Real-time tracking of your baby's growth and pumping sessions, including unlimited access to evidence based lactation information and personalized content designed to help you reach your breast milk feeding goals. - Responsive Pump Technology automatically adjusts to the body and environment and makes sessions more consistent and productive. - Quiet when it matters most for discretion in all situations, including late night pumping sessions. - More milk in less time with 2-Phase Expression Technology when double pumping, compared to single pumping. This research based technology, uses two distinct phases, just like breastfeeding babies: 1. Stimulation Phase: to start the milk ow, when babies first go to breast, they suck fast and light. 2. Expression Phase: after milk ow or "let-down" starts, babies breastfeed with a slower, deeper suck, bringing out more milk faster. Dimensions : Unit weight: 2.2 lbs. (breast pump only)/8.18 lbs. (retail package)

Don't buy because you think it pumps better than cheaper pumps!! It doesnt
I'm giving the Medela Sonata breast pump 1 star.No doubt it's small, portable, light weight and quiet. There is also a Medela app that you can link the Sonata to if you chose. With the app you can see an actual charge remaining percentage. The app has articles, tips advice ect. It can keep up with pump session times via blue tooth. You manually input how much you pump. Those features are what made me chose to spend the extra few hundred dollars and go with the Sonata over the Pump in style with Max flow.Inside of the Sonata breast pump there was a pamphlet with info on how to sign up for free Medela samples. It's available to people in the US only being a Canadian that annoyed me especially after spending 600+ including extra pump parts ect. When my son was first born he was jaundice and needed supplement formula. He preferred the bottle nipple to my breast and would refuse to nurse. So I started exclusively pumping with a 10 year old Medela pump in style I used with my oldest. I used this older pump 6-8 times a day for about 3-4 hours of pumping time total per day. I had a really good milk supply and things were going well. Until the Medela pump in styles diaphragm tore after using it exclusively for 2.5 months. Medela no longer sells replacement repair parts for any of their pumps. Once it's broken you have to buy a new one.I then started looking for a replacement breast pump and after reading many good reviews about the Sonata and comparing it to the hospital grade Medela symphony I decided to purchase from amazon.ca. In Canada Amazon is at time of writing this review at least 100.00 cheaper than buybuy baby and Walmart. I also used my 15%amazon registry completion discount to get an additional discount.Meanwhile while waiting on my new pump to come in from Amazon I had to rent a hospital grade Medela Symphony pump from London drugs. I was surprised to find out the hospital pump seemed to only work slightly better than my Medela pump in style that was 10 years old.About 5 days later my Sonata pump came in! I was stoked! As I began reading the instruction booklet I immediately was disappointed to learn that the operating life of this breast pump is approximately (3) 15 minute sessions per day for 1 year!! Being that I exclusively pump I would be replacing this 600$ pump a lot sooner than a year. Forget about using it for another baby in the future. I would also be stuck with the extra connectors, and membranes I bought that are specific to the Sonata. When you first get the Sonata you have to charge it for 12 hours before its first use and you never want the battery to drop below 20% charge otherwise you'll kill your rechargeable battery which according to other reviews has been a problem with the Sonata. You can also just use it while plugged in but you lose the Sonatas portability. I noticed right away the illuminated read out was blurry because it partially illuminated other numbers making it hard to read. You also can't tell how much charge is remaining percentage wise without linking it via blue tooth to the app on your phone. After reading the reviews comparing the suction of this machine to the Hospital grade symphony I had high hopes. I started pumping, cranked the pump up to max suction and thought OMG you have got to be kidding me no way this can't be as high as it goes. I usually get 4ounces from each breast using both the Symphony, and the Pump in Style. With the Sonata on a slightly engorged set of breasts and after 30 minutes I got 2 ounces from each breast. I had to hook my boobs back up to my rented symphony to extract the remaining 4 ounces of milk in my boobs. So next time I thought "I wonder if I leave it plugged in while pumping if it will increase the suction.... Nope same results every time. Ultimately I decided to keep my symphony rental at 3.50 cents a day because I don't want to lose my milk supply especially since my LO is eating more every day. All though the Sonata is small and runs on a rechargeable battery I choose to use my Medela Swing single pump breast pump when going out. It fits better in the diaper bag and it may take a little longer but I can extract the same amount of milk as the Sonata. For the price of this breast pump I was expecting it to at least work well. I didn't expect a 10 year old Medela pump in style to have better suction.

This is an excellent breast pump. Medela is an industry leader and this is why their hospital-grade Symphony pump is the standard for most hospitals. I have used the Medela Symphony, Freestyle, and Sonata. The Sonata combines the best of all three. Here is my take on the product:

Pros:
1) It is a strong and efficient pump. It is advertised as hospital-grade strength and I would concur that it is very close to the strength of the Medela Symphony, which is what is recommended by most lactation consultants to establish breast milk supply.
2) It has the advantage of being portable (battery powered) over the Symphony.
3) It is quiet - way more quiet than Freestyle. I have done teleconferences while pumping and no one knows. I will pump in the middle of the night beside my sleeping baby and she will not wake up.

Cons:
1) It is bulkier and does not have the same battery life as Freestyle (but it's also a stronger pump). The battery also needs to charge overnight if you're going to go cordless for the day.
2) It is expensive but it's not overpriced based on the quality and effectiveness of the product. Medela customer support is also fantastic so if you have problems, they will help you and I don't know if all pump brands are the same.
3) The pump parts are bulkier than the Freestyle but they are also sturdier. I found the pump parts wore more with Freestyle. The Sonata pump parts were made to be used a lot. They will trap some milk but the milk has never been trapped in the pump tubing, which is critical, since that would damage the actual pump engine. Some milk trapping is a small inconvenience in the pump parts to protecting the longevity of the pump.

I bought this product to replace a Medela Swing when I went back to work. I wanted something quieter and faster. This pump, coupled with a bra that holds the pump cups in place, cut my pumping time to between 8 to 12 minutes and kept me working (at the computer) throughout.

PROs
The unit times each session on a big screen and offers lots of different suction strengths and two different rhythms. I find the screen gives me all the information I need, so I haven’t tried the App.

CONs
The valves in the Sonata are bigger and more of a hassle to wash, particularly at work. I solved this problem by bringing a bowl to work that I use as a mini sink to soak and rinse the parts. When I travel I use a ziplock bag to soak and rinse the parts. The sonata was not as quiet as I expected, but the HVAC at work was loud enough to make it inaudible to others.

The Sonata is big and not light. I leave it at work and it is a luxurious treat compared to the Swing, but it’s probably not ideal for someone who plans to be on the go with a pump all the time. It comes with an insulated bag and fitted ice pack for milk that I use every day. This is a dream machine for the right person.

I’ve been exclusively pumping since my daughter was born due to latch issues and started off by renting a hospital grade pump. The monthly fees were outrageous so I decided to invest and purchase my own. I did so much research and was stuck between this pump and the freestyle flex and am so glad I went with this pump. It’s so comparable to the medela symphony and super chic. I like how I don’t need to be tied to a wall to use it either - once it’s charged I can walk around my house with it.
The buttons to use the pump are straight forward and easy to use. Easily my best purchase of 2020 for my daughter. It empties my very well and I’m more than satisfied.

Bought this after buying and using the Philips Avent pump for almost two months as my milk supply was dropping. This was recommended by my lactation consultant to try and bring my milk supply back up as my baby can not latch properly and I have an inverted nipple.

Pros
1)Able to be super quiet to pump on regular mode - there’s also a quiet battery saver mode that can be used instead (can pump at night beside sleeping baby and husband)
2)Able to “break through” some of the clogs I’ve had
3)Boosted up milk supply (gradually, compared to same diet same pumping schedule with the Philips Avent pump)
4)Built in battery able to pump throughout the night without charging
5)Special bra available to double pump hands free

Cons
1)Many pieces to clean and wash
2)Feels like quite a bit of milk remains on the pump parts and doesn’t flow into the bottle (every drop counts for me as I have very little milk per pumping session)
3)Doesn’t massage the breast like the Philips pump did so you might need to hand massage to help break up clogs (as recommended by my lactation consultant to speed things up)
4)high cost - pamphlet inside says expected pump lifespan is 1 year used daily
5)Long charging time - 12 hours if completely drained
6)After spending $500 on a pumping system, still need to spend another $50 to buy a specialty pumping bra to take advantage of the double pump system
7)Doesn’t include the Calma Solitaire like some of the lower end Medela pump systems
8)Doesn’t include the different pump phalange sizes - only large sizes included in kit
9)Not meant to be mobile like some of the other lower end Medela systems - pump is extremely heavy and bulky

Just as good as the hardcore medela harmony I had for 6 months. I should have gone with this sooner. Highly recommend this pump if you're an exclusive pumper. It's worth the price.
