Very smooth movement and lots of adjustment on the "friction" settings
This is a fantastic video head for video use. The movement is very steady and predictable with lots of drag adjustment available. When using a C70 and the SmallRig quick release base plate (3158) which allows me to mount this to a DJI RSC2 it is necessary to mount the camera "backwards" in the MVH502AH. This is mildly annoying and is a function of how the RSC2 fine adjustment works. The included base plate does NOT fit in an RSC2 gimbal mount.

This is my first professional fluid head so can not compare it to any high end tripod heads out there. Product came in the original box with manuscripts, etc. The head itself is nice and robust , being made from a combination of metal and hard plastic. I can definately tell the difference in my panning compared to my old cheap fluid head. The cheaper fluid head was smooth once in motion but would always slightly jerk just before the actual pan. This one has done none of that in my short time with it. Pans and tilts are smooth and you have the ability to adjust the tension for both. The only issue I have is I would have preferred it if the tilt lock and pan tension knob were reversed. I would have also preferred the pan lock to be on the back facing me rather then on the front of the tripod. There is a large hollow gap underneath the camera plate however so you can adjust the lock if your hands will fit. Overall, I am really nitpicking with the negatives here, as I am very happy with my purchase.

As other reviewers have noted, it's larger and heavier than I expected. The heavy mass is good as I've previously had trouble with my camera vibrating in the wind while taking videos. I don't normally use the handle as it contributes a small amount to wind vibration. The fluid dampening system is new to me and will probably work very well if I were to move the camera to follow action. I'm currently only turning to a desired view and locking it or using a motorized rotating head. The knob that locks the rotation is in what seems to be an odd forward position that I have to reach around to turn and lock. It took about a week to get used to it. The elevation locking knob is on the right in a much more intuitive position and has a nice smooth turn. One knob I really don't like is the one that locks down the sliding foot that attaches to the camera. For a Panasonic Lumix GH5 with a pancake lens, this knob directly interferes with the camera body. I have to slide the camera nearly all the way to the rear in order to turn it. Fortunately, the front of the sliding foot does not appear in the camera lens view. I did have to buy a new large suitcase to fit the combined head and tripod and place it in diagonally for travel. If you are looking for a very lightweight and small tripod with head, this isn't it. I needed something that would stop wind vibration and this head plus Manfrotto tripod combination does an excellent job. The materials and build seem very sturdy and durable. My travel videos from windy beaches are finally solid and I'm very happy with it.

This is one of the "go to standards" for low to mid budget video heads and as soon as one uses it, the reason for this becomes quite clear. It is a solid, robust, well-made piece of kit (as one would expect from Manfrotto), that pans and tilts very smoothly. With adjustable tension in both axis, this is a good upgrade over their more basic head (500) for not very much more. Unlike its more expensive cousins, it has a fixed counterbalance system. Nevertheless, it is possible to simply slide the mounting plate forward and back to find "the balance point" for your gear to make tilting easier.

The arm can be mounted on either side, and there are 3/8" mounting holes on each side (toward the front) of the video hear. The plate needs to be slid into place, and Manfrotto makes use of a clever locking mechanism so that even if you forget to tighten the plate down, it won't slide out sending all your gear crashing to the ground.

All in all, this is an excellent video head and a substantial upgrade over cheaper off-name brands. Is it more expensive? Yes, but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. I can see this video head lasting many, many, many years without any fuss.

The oil they use to lubricate the parts seeps out of the different locking mechanisms, but not much and it can be simply wiped with a paper towel. The head is extremely heavy and I mean EXTREMELY. I would definitely not recommend for travel or DSLR use. It is quite prone to scratching so be careful just throwing this into the trunk of a vehicle. It holds the weight is specifies and is very easy to balance a rig onto. When proper balance is achieved, this product works wonders. Everything is placed efficiently and is well thought out. Main drawback to this product is it's weight. It is not fun at all to carry around. I'd recommend this product for people with very heavy setups. I also have the 501 and I actually prefer it due to it's size and weight.

16 years ago I bought my first Manfrotto tripod, still have it, still works. I needed a second head for a second set of tripod legs. The head is smooth and sturdy, I'm sure this will last a long time like my other Manfrotto setup.
Don't waste your money on cheap Chinese brands, they might work great for a year or two but they'll eventually break.

I was looking for an affordable head that would allow for movements typically required for video recording. This head certainly does the job well. I have a Canon DSLR on the head and am very pleased with the results.

Initial impression: once well balanced, it works like charm. Using with Nikon D500 and Nikorr 200-500mm lens.
Cons: becomes heavy to carry-on long walks and due it's large size, it does not fit well in camera bag.
Have to carry in check in bag rather than carry on bag

I've seen a bit of griping about this head being 'clunky', not smooth. I've used it for taking video of birds and natural surroundings and it not only was smooth as silk, but noiseless as well. However, I think I understand the complaints on its clunkiness; it comes (or mine came) pretty well tightened down (perhaps to keep it from flexing too much during shipping...?), and you need to loosen the bindings that cinch the ball bearing mounts which I believe are only on the pan mechanism, and use the fluid mount adjustments to fine-tune the fluidity of movement instead. Once I did this, that little choppy, clunky chatter (which you skateboarders, or anyone familiar with ball bearing joints, will recognize as problematic if tightened too tightly) will go away. The result is a nice, smooth, quiet movement.

I had it too loose at first, and was having trouble keeping the movement fluid, but after adjusting a few times I found it to be awesome! I got really nice movement on the pan, the rise and lowering, and both in unison, as it should be. At this point, you're on your own to develop the feel it takes to make those smooth movements.

As a fledgling filmmaker, I'm working on my control of all things involved in my filmmaking, but this help immensely in making what would otherwise look like a handheld, YouTube vlog video look very professional. One suggestion would be to always allow a second or so to begin and end your movement so that the jerky beginning or ends of your clip, if any, can be edited out in post. Other than that, I find this to be the perfect tool for what I need to make my videos look really nice! Like anything else, it's not something that will do all the work for you, and since you'll most likely use it to smooth out DSLR/Mirrorless footage, you aren't going to have the added weight of a big, heavy camera to help slow erratic movements. It is capable of holding one of those cameras; there are two mounting screws included, a 1/4" and a 3/8", so attaching any DSLR-type camera is a breeze, and either screw can be removed so it's not in the way or rattling around on the slider plate. The slider plate allows for easy balancing of your camera on the head so whatever lens you're using, it'll balance nicely. I've used it on a Peak Designs Travel Tripod with a Canon EOS R and a Canon 70-200 zoom with spectacular results, even without using the lens' mount for additional balancing!

For the price, I'm really pleased with this purchase!
