FAQ / Troubleshooting

1. How can I get the best quality scan possible?

Ensure the film/slides are clean and that you clean the inside of the scanner with the included cleaning brush immediately before scanning. See pg. 7 for instructions on how to use the cleaning brush.

2. How should I prepare the film/slides to ensure the best possible scan?

The film/slide should be free of any dust/fingerprints. This can be done with an appropriate cleaning cloth.

3. I’ve noticed a consistent spot on every slide I have scanned. Is something wrong with my scanner?

There is likely a small amount of dust inside your unit. Use the included cleaning brush to ensure there is no foreign debris. See pg. 7 for instructions on how to use the cleaning brush.

4. Do I need a computer to begin scanning?

Everything is plug-and-play right out of the box. You can save images to an SD card (up to 128GB) or the scanner’s internal memory (64MB). You can then export to a computer at a time that is more convenient.

5. What file format are the images saved as?

The files are automatically saved in JPG format.

6. Can I use this to scan raw film or do I need to develop the negatives first?

The scanner will work for developed film only.

7. The scanner screen is black but it has power.

Ensure an HDMI cable is not connected to the back of the film scanner. Confirm the USB power source is 5V 1A and test with another USB power source.

8. There are red lines on the display and no image preview.

Confirm the USB power source is 5V 1A and test with another USB power source.

Cleaning and Care:

1. Please make sure the scanner is clean before using.

2. Do not use liquid cleaners.

3. Do not use organic solvents such as alcohol, gasoline, or thinner, to clean the equipment.

4. Clean outside of the product only with a dry cloth.

5. Do not clean the inside of this product with anything except for the included cleaning brush.

An impressive scanner with wonderful resolution

An impressive scanner with wonderful resolution
SummaryFor the most part, I am pleased with this little scanner. The photos scan well and I'm very impressed with the resolution. The biggest problem that I've had with it is in cleaning the inside lens -- you have to work at it a little bit to not leave dust behind.DetailsI received the scanner today and have tried it out for the past few hours. I've read everything I could get my hands on about the scanner, which was basically nothing but the manual and Magnasonic's how-to videos since it is so new. I bought it without reviews because Magnasonic's other scanners were well reviewed and I wanted the 5" screen. It took me around 20 minutes to wrap my mind around the menus, but once I did, it was easy to use. Do take the time to review the few short Magnasonic how-to videos on Youtube -- that's a lot shorter than reading the manual. My biggest question prior to receiving the scanner was how quickly could I scan slides. The answer is it depends on two things: the quality of the slides and how much you want to fiddle with colours for each slide. I had around 20 slides which were stapled together rather than the regular glue. These did not slide through the slide adapter because they were too thick, hence I had to open the adapter for each slide. The adapters do not open easily, which is good when you're pushing slides through but bad when you have to open them for each slide. For these slides, it took _lot_ longer to scan them. The colour adjustments were very handy for some slides and you could easily spend a lot of time adjusting each one. However, if you're not going to adjust the colours for each slide and the slides are in good condition, you can push through three per minute!Do expect to do some post-processing afterward. The rotate control only rotates by 180°, not 90°, so after scanning the slides you will need to still rotate many of them. The 135 slide formats did not need border cropping afterwards whereas the 126 slide formats did. I did not have 110 slides. Even with the colour adjustments, I still put them through some automated photo processing to adjust the colours more.I was most impressed with the resolution. I was able to crop a photo to a quarter of the original size and have it still appear good. Take a look at the cropped photo that I have attached to this review. The 5" display is very handy -- my last slide scanner had a 1.5" display. If that's still not big enough for you, you can hook it up to a television instead. I was concerned that the television was only used for the gallery (playback) mode, but it can be used at all steps of the process.I scanned from 35 format film and super 8 videos (stills only) as well, and they all scanned well as required. In terms of purchasing an SD card, you don't have to spend the money on a high capacity one. While it will accept a 128 GB card, that's overkill. I bought a 32 GB highly rated name-brand card on Amazon for $15 CDN. The average photo file size is 1.5 MB, so a 32 GB card will hold over 21,000 photos. There were a couple of downsides. - The USB cord is short. However, it's a standard mini-usb cord so could easily be replaced with a longer one. - The scanner does not know the current date. Hence, the photos were all dated 2017. This wasn't a concern to me because after my post-processing the newly saved photos have the current date. - The biggest challenge that I had was in cleaning the lens. The brush fits into the lens area well, but I had difficulty getting all of the dust out. Still, it's a lot better than my last scanner which had sections which could not be reached for cleaning.

I purchased this scanner a week ago and I have digitized well over 500 35mm slides so far. In summary, this is a great scanner for scanning 35mm slides. It’s easy to use and the image quality is good.

The scanner comes with a 5V, 1A USB wall adapter, but if your end goal is to upload images to a PC you can leave the scanner connected to your PC’s USB port. I typically capture a batch of images to the scanner’s memory, upload to the PC, delete the images stored in the scanner and start again. I installed a 32GB SD card since the scanner’s 128MB internal memory only holds about 50 images. Captured images are named “PICTxxxx.JPG” so if you want to keep images organized by event, date, etc. you’ll need to work in batches. I wish there was an option to capture directly to the PC, where captured images could be renamed or tagged on the fly.

The 35mm slide adapter makes easy work of continuously feeding and capturing slides. I found that the best way is to have three slides in the adapter – one infeed, one outfeed and the middle slide being scanned. Pushing on the infeed and outfeed slides allows you to shift the middle slide back and forth to ensure it is perfectly centered before hitting the “Capture” button.

If your goal is to scan negatives, watch out! I tried scanning some 35mm negatives, but the film catches on the adapter outfeed slot and does not feed through. The plastic adapter has a slight step at the outfeed slot that catches the film. This is likely a molding defect, but it completely kills this feature.

The images on the built-in 5in LCD screen look good, but to really see detail I suggest connecting a PC monitor via the HDMI port. The addition detail visible on an external monitor allows you to ensure the slide is centered and you’re not capturing the edge of the slide frame. Even so, be prepared to do a lot of digital cropping to get rid of the occasional edge artifact.

On an external monitor the image sensor gaussian noise is noticeable. I was disappointed to see this, but it is not really a problem, just an opportunity for improvement.

The resolution spec. is misleading. The sensor is a 16Mp sensor (4920x3280). The scanner is spec’d at 24Mp, but this is achieved with interpolation. Pixel interpolation does not necessarily mean better image quality, but it guarantees a larger file size. I’ll let the marketeers debate image quality, but I did not see any significant difference, so I set the resolution to 16Mp (about 3Mp per JPG image) and left it there.
Once I established how to orient the slides, I did not need to use the vertical or horizontal flip buttons. The most common adjustment I needed to make was the brightness, and this is easy to do with just a few button clicks. Brightness adjustment just ensures no part of the image is saturating. After that, any remaining adjustments (tint, contrast, etc.) require image editing software on a PC.

The cleaning tool works brilliantly. Thankfully my slides are relatively clean, but it was very easy to clean the occasional bit of dust that landed on the scanner’s illumination pane.
.
Overall, this scanner is easy to use and works exactly as described. I am happy with this purchase.

Bought it as a gift and the recipient loved it! It’s pretty well-priced for how well it performs! It’s awesome for those wanting to get a glimpse at the past from old film. It’s incredibly user friendly - if you need more in depth help they list a YouTube channel which they provide some user tutorials to further assist! Incredibly satisfied with this product and would recommend! :)

On the + side, it’s nice to be able to save slides and film segments digitally. This model is decent but has some quirks - it needs an SD card to interface with a laptop (and built-in memory is good for only 8-10 slides, max); the instructions are minimalist and written in the tiniest type; the supplied slide holders (esp for 35 mm) seem to be sized wrong; it doesn’t deal with portrait vs landscape orientation very well, as other reviewers have noted. I do like the upward facing screen, which is of an okay size.
Just a word of warning- converting slides one by one is a tedious and labour-intensive task. Especially if you wish to edit before downloading to a laptop, for eg. Don’t figure on zipping thru a 1,000 old slides in a weekend or two or three.

Within the price range, this one and the brand were highly rated on amazon and in photography groups on FB & other sources outside of websites selling these. I have only used it so far to look through my dad's old slides. It has some built in storage memory and accepts an sd card for additional storage. The images, while limited by the condition or exposure level of the slides, were bright crisp and clear. I only scanned one of them so far. The controls are pretty straightforward and it scans quickly. I will eventually scan more of them, and the many negatives I have stored away from eons ago. Great quality product for the price point. I am very happy with it.

Very straightforward to use. With an SD card one can easily store captured scans. Uploading to a computer is fast and will create a file on desktop for the captures.
The supplied adaptors for each film size are strong and easy to slide into place.
The 35mm slide adaptor is designed for single slides, however in practice I found that by having three in the adaptor at any one time you can easily shunt slides into position from the right of the scanner. This safes time opening up the adaptor each time.
The 5 inch screen is very clear and bright .
