FANTASTIC
I was gifted (that is the word I will use as a synonym for "the recipient of unwanted family treasures") several thousand photo slides by my father-in-law before he left the country forever and moved to Panama. I have to say, I was pretty mad. What on earth was I going to do with all these slides? I don't have a projector, and I don't have anyone who would be interested in looking at these images! How can I Mary Kondo my way out of THIS!?Despite my protests of "We will never even look at these!", my partner did not want to get rid of the slides, so we wondered for a long time what to do about them. We eventually came to the conclusion that while it would be time-consuming, it would be much more cost-effective to scan/digitize the slides ourselves rather than ship them out to a third-party company (which I am told you can do). I began this long and arduous quest -- of Middle Earth proportions, one might say -- on the 17th of October, 2020. I anticipate it will take me many months to complete, but Frodo didn't get the One Ring to Mount Doom without a bit of work on his part, did he?After scanning upwards of 1100 slides (so far), I cannot recommend this item enough. It may take you a while to do, but scanning old photos/slides/negatives yourself is weirdly rewarding, and it will give you a glance into the past of your forebearers -- one which may have otherwise been forgotten.PROS+ This is very affordable for what it is; at just over a hundred bucks, this will far outweigh the cost of sending your slides off to a third-party professional to scan for you+ Relatively quick. I have gotten quite swift at doing this and can scan about 100 slides an hour. Although I have a long way to go, the task is no longer as daunting as I thought it would be, as I do an hour or so here and there as my schedule allows.+ Takes an SD card. I inserted an 8GB SD card into the scanner and the photos are being saved to that, rather than to the device itself, which only stores a few dozen images before it is full. Having the photos on a separate memory device is so much more convenient than having boxes upon boxes of slides taking up space in my apartment.+ You can adjust the exposure and the colour of the image on this scanner before you save the photo. This is really helpful as you can fiddle with a photo and scan it multiple times with different exposures, giving you different copies of the same image. I have scanned some images three or four times at different exposures and colour formats to make sure that I am doing the original photo justice. It does not take a lot of time, and it is much easier than having to re-scan a single slide later when you realize you scanned it at an over-exposed setting+ There are lots of tools with this scanner! You can scan photo slides, film, etc. It is fantastic!+ Comes with a little cleaning rod so you can get dust and other specks off the screen. I recommend doing this periodically; I scanned about 30 photos in a row without realizing that there was a black speck stuck on the screen and ended up having to rescan them (ugh).+Plugs into its own power source or directly to your computer. It is helpful to have it plugged in to the computer, as you can switch between scanning photos and viewing them on a larger screen within a few seconds, and this helps determine whether a particular image is up-to-standard or whether you need to rescan it+ The scanner and its parts came in minimal packaging, which is always a bonusCONS- Sometimes, the scanner forgets it has an SD card in it or just turns off after a while (I mean, it is having to do a lot of work, poor little thing). I usually just turn it off and on again and that sorts it out.

Quite intuitive out of the box, EASY to learn. Does exactly what it promises. I wasn’t expecting glorious results from decades old slides. Some colours are messed up a bit but these can most likely be tweaked with software. But basically bang on to how I remember them being projected on the wall in the basement. Don’t expect today’s standards. It is overall an impressive unit that is really easy to use. Worth what I paid. It wasn’t a let down in any way. I didn’t even need an SD card. I just filled the onboard memory, transferred that to my laptop, cleared the unit memory and started again! It held enough pix that I did not need any more room. The tray for the 35mm slides worked A1 perfecto; my slides are in good shape - no warping or other damage.
Very happy as long as it doesn’t fart out in the near future.

I'm working through family estate business, and I have a large collection of old 35mm slides that I wanted to prepare for digital distribution to family members. This device has proven an excellent tool for simply processing these slides for archival distribution.

1) Decent image quality. I'm not aiming for National Archival level quality, nor do I want the images to be so large I'd need a hard drive to distribute the results. Typical max image file size is 1.8 - 2.5 MB @ 5760 X 3840 px

2) Noise is a problem on some shots, but there are controls to adjust for this. I'm trying to aim for speed of processing rather than quality of each shot, so I will be going back to specific slides for re-scans with adjusted settings.

3) my sample stock isn't Pulitzer quality - so some blurry images aren't worth the extra effort but this device handles these with easy and the result is satisfactory.

4) Some shots were noisier, in that the device chose color settings that created significant anomalies in image temperature and brightness. These were due to subtle stains on the slide. These require some post processing. This scanner will struggle with these cases.

5) The device can connect to a PC/mac while scanning, but it cannot tramsfer in real time. It functions as a standalone camera, writing the images to SD card, however with a few button presses you can flip it into USB mode and it will mount the SD card on the PC. As a result my workflow is setup with the device powered by USB cable connected to my macOS computer, so that I will scan a run of images, flip it to USB mode, let the SD card mounts on the computer, and my workflow software (Hazel in this case) copies/moves the collected images off to a sorting folder I've setup for the inbound images. Once there they get sorted and processed.

Since this functions like a camera, the image series increments so you don't lose track of how many images were scanned. This is very helpful for ensuring rescans don't overlap by name.

Con: the EXIF headers are missing important information about the device (EXIF Device make: MAKER NAME). I mean come on, the summer intern working the engineering team could have caught that error.

For this is a recommended buy, except that I've only owned this scanner to date, so I'll gladly demote this review once I find something better. For it's my 4+ star purchase.

I am effortlessly whizzing through 5 decades of old slides. This little device makes it a breeze. I have only two complaints. First the device does not remember your settings when it shuts off and it will shut itself off after a period of non-use. You must remember to set your capture format and reset the resolution to interpolated every time you power up. Too bad it does not remember the settings. Also, the manual does not talk about how to grab shots from film although the plastic trays are provided. It would have been helpful to have some instruction. I did figure it out eventually. (The small film guides are closed inside of the second holder, the one labeled for negatives, they will then hold the film still and guide it through the machine. You do need to rig some kind of holder for your film reels but otherwise the grabs from film worked well. I did end up using the settings for 110 slides and then cropping and rotating as the built in Super8 mode cut off a bit of the picture. Not a problem. I guess from a design perspective I also have one more quibble. The device has the display screen facing straight forwards. Unless you are scanning with the device on a shelf you cannot see it. I ended up rigging a holder that tilted the device backwards at a 45 degree angle so the screen was visible. Strange choice to not have made it point upwards where the human is located. Perhaps designed with squirrel operators in mind - tongue in cheek. All in all, I am thrilled with the simplicity and the results. Since none of the flaws are insurmountable I did not reduce my review for them but manufacturer should look to fix these things for their next model.

I used this for scanning 35mm negs. Scanning is fast and easy, and image quality seems quite good.

The screen is too small to see very fine details and the unit doesn't allow viewing of the images on a TV or computer before scanning and saving them, so it is easiest to scan doubtful ones and then edit on a computer.

The loading of negative strips is not ideal. The manual says to remove the film holder, open it and insert the negs. That would be very slow and cumbersome, so leaving the holder in the scanner and inserting the neg strip into it is the way to go. As shipped, the neg holder does not prevent the neg strip from going crooked as it is pushed in, which is annoying, but it is possible to insert narrow strips of thin wood, card or plastic on either side of the film channel to better confine the film. This makes it very much faster and easier to load and scan multiple images. Note: I've not tried to scan slides, but it looks as if there would be no similar problem with them.

An obvious issue is the near-vertical orientation of the screen, making viewing difficult if the unit is being used on a desk top. My fix was to make a wedge shaped block of rigid foam as a base for the unit, thus tilting the screen into a better viewing angle.

Overall, I'm glad I bought the unit....... it's much faster to use than the flatbed scanner I tried previously.

I was surprised when I got this because it looks so flimsy that I thought it was not going to work. But it not only works well, it is as easy as counting to 3 to use. The directions were not easy to read, but it is very intuitive to use, so I just tried it out, and I love the results.

It not only makes a nice, large digital copy of your slide, it also can change the lighting so you can get darker slides to look good in the digital copy. And it copies directly to an sd card (I bought one--doesn't come with), so you can use it in your computer to modify or resize. It does come with a cable to attach to a computer, but I prefer to have my photos on an sd card and use them that way, so I didn't try the cord yet.

It makes the copy in just a few seconds! You can go through a stack of slides in just minutes, and you have them all ready to modify or print that fast. I have not used the negative copier yet, but I probably will. So even though it looks flimsy, it works like a charm and is worth every penny if you have a bunch of digital photos you want from slides or negatives.

I can't rate the durability yet because I have only had it a few months, but I may add something later if I need to.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nifty way to inexpensively digitize slides
Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2017
Size: 128MB built-in memoryVerified Purchase
Note that this is NOT a scanner. This nifty piece of equipment takes a digital image of slides (or negatives). The average scan time for an 80-slide carousel was about 30 minutes. Don’t expect great quality in the images and do expect to spend time using photo-editing software to perfect the “scanned” images. If you end up wanting even small format prints (i.e. 4x6) you’ll want to copy directly from the slides. That being said, the quality is good enough for sharing decades of wonderful memories and it will give you and your family digital images that can be enjoyed by all and will preserve them in case something catastrophic happened to the original slides.

PROS: 1) Easy to use. 2) The slide adapter seems pretty flimsy, but it’s remarkably sturdy and it functions well. 3) Adjusting the color saturation (especially for red) worked better than I thought it would. 4) The unit reminds you to insert an SDHC card which is very helpful.

CONS: 1) The brightness control doesn’t always work. 2) There is an internal 2013 date that can’t be changed, so if you use an SDHC card for saving images this “system” date will be on all of your images. What this means is if you use Shutterfly (for example), it will put your uploaded images on your 2013 timeline instead of on your 2017 timeline. This is irksome at best. 3) The “Flip” setting doesn’t reset after you flip a slide image, which I didn’t figure out until l I had scanned and uploaded about 30 slides. The first one was backward, so I flipped it not knowing that setting would “stick.” This resulted in the remaining slides being scanned backwards which I didn’t catch until I had uploaded them to my laptop.

One more note about adjusting the brightness: As another reviewer stated, “Blown out slides will still be blown out.” I agree. Using the brightness controls to adjust the contrast for these will only make a darker “blown-out” image. You can brighten dark slides to some degree, but I found that the setting didn’t work very often.

All in all, this is a quick and easy way to digitize thousands of slides (which is what I’m doing). TIP: Use the included dust-remover wand often to clean the glass!
