This headphone distribution amplifier is absolutely outstanding for my purposes in my opinion. I like to switch between three different headphones during my hobby recordings. I use two closed back headphones that are 80 ohm and 250 ohm as well as my third open back headphones that are 300 ohms. This Mackie headphone amplifier does an outstanding job driving all three headphones and I love the fact that I have independent volume knobs for each one of them.
In my setup I use a focusrite Scarlett audio interface. From the Scarlett, two 1/4" outputs fr the interface connects to the Mackie HM-4 using a L+R 1/4" splitter cable that merges channels into one stereo 1/4" connector which is plugged into the HM-4. With this setup the direct monitor button on the scarlett audio interface still works.
I use to closed back headphones to do recording so there's no sound leakage. And when I do mixing and mastering I use my open back headphones. Having the HM4 really is convenient so that I don't have to keep plugging in unplugging different headphones.... And obviously independent controls really helps.
Awesome.

Awesome.
It works as it's supposed to and the actual box part of it and the design is well-built. However, the knobs are a bit shaky and loose and it starts to introduce noticeable noise when you increase the volume past 50%.
That all said, for $50, it's a great headphone amp. However, next time, I'll be sure to spend at least $100 so I can go without the noise and loose knobs.
Fortunately, I have a mix of headphone extensions and I was able to alternate: One Planet Waves cable, one thinner brand, one planet waves, one thinner brand. But it would be prime if Mackie could make this thing just a centimeter wider, and then all 4 PW brand cables would fit in no problem. Would also be super rad to have a power switch, but it doesn't.
Other than that, super useful little headphone splitter.

I figured I'd give it a try to see if it would fit, and how bad it looked in the rack. That's when I discovered the 4 protruding washer head screws on the bottom that I presume hold the internal PSU in place. These are in stark contrast to the countersunk flat head screws used on the rest of the unit. The screws extend outside the 1U footprint and prohibit level mounting of the unit above another item in the rack. It may be possible to mount the unit at the bottom of the rack, or above another amenable rack unit that provides enough clearance for the screw heads.
Everything else about the unit seemed of reasonable quality for the price. The pots felt ok, the buttons felt good. I powered it on to ensure it worked, and all the lights came on. I did not test the unit any further since I chose to return it and did not want to risk damaging it.
